Part 1 of 2: Classic Game Room reviews Ys I & II CHRONICLES for PSP, starting with Ys 1 Ancient Ys Vanished Omen, originally released in 1987 by Falcom. This remake of Ys 1 by Falcom is published by Xseed for the Sony PSP and has beautiful anime style cut scenes and totally updated visuals that look great and retain the classic old school RPG feel of the game. In Ys 1 you play as Adol Christin and eventually meet your friend Dogi. Bumper car combat makes the game extremely simple to play and means that all combat is based on experience and weapons until you near the end of the game, but the storyline and plot progression is good enough to keep players interested who dig RPG style stories and babes with blue hair that play the harmonica. Too bad I start with a "nightmare" lol Yep, trying my luck with this game in Nightmare Mode, also being the first time through the game. It's Omega's fault too, got hyped thanks to his videos. Onto the boss itself, I tried to do it without items but you know... I'm too cheap for that, so once I tried it twice or so I got bored and went for a normal run. The only move I know to flash guard is the bubble attack and he doesn't do it in this take *sigh* Anyway, loving this game so far. I may try the rest of the Ys series after this. Force you to use other characters JUST for the final boss is a douche move there. And what's worst, the first team features the characters I like less: Dogi, Elk and Mishera. I only used Dogi because the other two are either really slow or can't do a damn thing. The second time is way better: Aisha, Geis and Cruxie. Nothing to say here, Aqua Burst all the day. And the last one is obvious; Adol. You have to destroy the minions first, which is perfect because they count towards the main body. The best thing is to weak them first and then kill them at the same time. And after that is a normal boss, spamming Pentagram and all of that. I didn't mention, but I got the best sword for Adol, which uses the Moon Dragon Stone. I really don't like Dogi and this fight practically forces it into you, and to make things worse you have to destroy the legs all the time to reveal the tongue. It can poisons too, so yeah, a fucking NIGHTMARE. All I could do is buy the best equipment and level up, and in the end I defeated it. Not only it has one of the best soundtracks ever (Crossing Rage), but it's the first 1vs1 boss fight. You CAN'T afford to get hit very often, and you have to time your flash guard a lot. You can't simply go and block all his attacks or you may regret it. Though it's not that bad. If you don't get to adapt, you can always loose and the story will continue. They key is Running Slash, which after flash guard will make nice damage and keep you far from Geis, so you can prepare to counter again. I actually died quite a few times here, but I didn't mind. She is a pierce character, but it doesn't have what makes Aisha awesome: she is simply TOO slow. It doesn't help either that her skills tend to be slower too, though there are decent ones too. You will not see me using her at all lol As for the boss, it's quite hard. It has lots of attacks, including a fucking tornado attack, which is easy to block and build SP and Extra. My choice is obvious Aisha because she is perfect for this one. You want to stay very far from him, thus you'll want to spam Killer Hornet. You want to use Adol and Dogi for those minions too. What makes this boss so annoying is the huge increase of HP and how it changes the pattern so fast. It doesn't matter, because it's worth it. After it, you get another seal, which will increase how much SP you'll get from charged attacks, and they will take half the time to use them! SP is no longer a problem.
