Studio Basics: Gain Stages | WinkSound

Any stage or point in an audio signal path where the gain or level of the signal can be adjusted or amplified is referred to as a gain stage. The most common example of a gain stage is the input or output level controls of any piece of gear, whether it's a pre-amp, a compressor's make up gain or a fader on a mixer. In this video recording engineer Keith Kaufman explains how to identify and make proper use of gain stages to ensure they are matched across the patch of the signal. This will ensure you preserve the natural dynamic range and signal to noise ration of the audio signal.
