visit: vishots.com Keenan Wyrobek from Stanford University is working closely with Willow Garage to continue the development work he and Eric Berger started while in their graduate studies at Stanford University. He shows off PR1 and explains the goals of the Personal Robotics Program and the next generation, PR2. Via Stanford University Website: Kenneth Salisbury, a professor of Computer Science and of Surgery leads the Personal Robotics Program at Stanford with CS Assistant Professor Andrew Ng in coordination with the department's STAIR project. After about 18 months of work, they have developed a first prototype. It is remotely controlled now (eventually it will become more autonomous) but it is an early milestone on the way to releasing a practical, affordable and complete robotics platform.

These sketches present our current progress in whole-body compliant control of humanoid robots at Willow Garage. The idea is to combine torque-based compliant behaviors for Cartesian and joint space tasks. This approach enables to respond quickly to contact, be safe and use effectively the dynamics of the mechanism. The focus of this research is more on the skill than on the single low level control process. We provide infrastructure to bridge the gap between the skill developer (who cares about the mathematics of movement and robot dynamics) and the skill user (who cares about motion / high level planning and perception). At the software level we use task and behavior introspection to create easy to use human readable specificatons of the skills. The whole-body compliant control framework provides task hierarchy, optimization of asks, and checking of skill feasibility at runtime.

Willow Garage graduates its first class of PR2 Robots, sending them off to Universities (and one company) around the world.

Scott Hassan gives emotional and touching speech about how their work at Willow Garage with PR2 robots and beyond matter & how robots will help change the world - assisting in everything from assisting the elderly to improving our productivity.

Here is an example of the commands needed to create a ROS publisher node which broadcasts stereo images and a disparity map from the Minoru webcam. The parameters for dense stereo may not be the greatest, but this gives some idea of what can be expected. To begin I run roscore, then I run stereocam_broadcast followed by stereocam_subscribe. For more information, please see www.willowgarage.com Professor Masayuki Inaba, Associate Professor Kei Okada and 4 grad students from JSK Lab, Tokyo University visited Willow Garage from March 15 to March 21, 2009. With only 4 1/2 days of very intensive work (ie sleeping only for a few hours a day), the team has connected their euslisp system with Willow Garage's ROS software. They were able to put together several demonstrations of their euslisp system and ROS working together to operate PR2 alpha robots. As Willow Garage's sincere appreciation for their enthusiastic efforts, each student received a Gphone as a gift and we all experienced a wonderful week developing mutual understanding, friendship, and progress in robotics, transcending differences in language and culture.
