For more check out myworldtravel.weebly.com The Williamsburg Bridge is a suspension bridge in New York City across the East River connecting the Lower East Side of Manhattan at Delancey Street with the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn on Long Island at Broadway near the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (Interstate 278). It once carried New York State Route 27A and later Interstate 78. Construction on the bridge, the second to cross this river, began in 1896, with Leffert L. Buck as chief engineer, Henry Hornbostel as architect and Holton D. Robinson as assistant engineer, and the bridge opened on December 19, 1903 at a cost of $24200000.At the time it was constructed, the Williamsburg Bridge set the record for the longest suspension bridge span on Earth. The record fell in 1924, when the Bear Mountain Bridge was completed. It is an unconventional structure, as suspension bridges go; though the main span hangs from cables in the usual manner, the side spans leading to the approaches are cantilevered, drawing no support from the cables above. The main span of the bridge is 1600 feet (490 m) long. The entire bridge is 7308 feet (2227 m) long between cable anchor terminals, and the deck is 118 feet (36 m) wide. The height at the center of the bridge is 135 feet (41 m) and each tower is 335 feet (102 m); these measurements taken from the river's surface at high water mark. This bridge and the Manhattan Bridge are the only suspension bridges in New York City that still carry both <b>...</b>

Williamsburg Bridge Acrobats

My friend and I were walking over the bridge after work when we came across a crowd near the middle looking up. Turns out there were a couple of acrobats on the bridge doing a little show. Unfortunately we were too far while she was performing to get footage and by the time we got close enough to record they were on their way down. Also, it turns out they did get arrested. There were police waiting at the end of the pedestrian walkway.

Cops ticket cyclists for not fully stopping at stop signs a block from here, but apparently a stream of cars and trucks going over the sidewalk at the base of the bridge is just fine. Thank you NYPD for keeping us all safe! (c) 2011 Environ.

Think Coffee, Williamsburg Bridge, Forest Hills High School, and Public School 164

This is the first part of my video from Sunday August 21, 2011, which was my fifth day of sightseeing in New York City. This video shows my trip through the upper part of Brooklyn to Queens. I ate breakfast at a cafe called 'Think Coffee'. I rode across the East river using Williamsburg Bridge which seemed to be have been the most bike friendly bridge that I traveled on during my trip in NYC. The bridge took me to the upper part of Brooklyn. I then rode diagonnaly through Brooklyn and Queens to Flushing. The first landmark I stopped to see was Forest Hills High School, where many celebrities studied including Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Jerry Springer, The Ramones, and Peter Parker (fictional Spiderman character). After that, I went and saw another school called "Public School 164" which is the elementary school where Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel both went and was where they first got to know each other while participating in a production of Alice and Wonderland. Check out my next video to see my travel to Queen College, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, USTA National Tennis Center, and Citi Field.

Williamsburg Bridge Sheet Acrobat Seanna Sharpe - July 11

(pardon the shaky cam-work - the bridge is jiggley and I'm using a camera that's about 800 years old.) Was biking on the Williamsburg Bridge this afternoon, and was getting ready to scream at the group of people stopped on the bike path... when I noticed that the reason they were all stopped and gawping upwards was that there was a neat chick (edit: Seanna Sharpe) doing some sheet acrobatics, hanging from the middle span of the bridge, which is super high-up. Good for her. It was fun.

You Longboard Bombing the Williamsburg Bridge

Go to www.youlongboard.com for more NYC longboarding action! Dropping the Williamsburg Bridge's newly refinished surface.. it was fast before but now it's just plain sick. According to the GPS I was using I was approaching 30mph on this run, but I'm not sure how much I trust the EveryTrail app where I got this info. Hella fast regardless.. The whole route covered by the Concrete Kings is available here, and this bridge run was at about mile 15. http
