PART ONE: THE MORAL SIDE OF MURDER If you had to choose between (1) killing one person to save the lives of five others and (2) doing nothing even though you knew that five people would die right before your eyes if you did nothing—what would you do? What would be the right thing to do? Thats the hypothetical scenario Professor Michael Sandel uses to launch his course on moral reasoning. After the majority of students votes for killing the one person in order to save the lives of five others, Sandel presents three similar moral conundrums—each one artfully designed to make the decision more difficult. As students stand up to defend their conflicting choices, it becomes clear that the assumptions behind our moral reasoning are often contradictory, and the question of what is right and what is wrong is not always black and white. PART TWO: THE CASE FOR CANNIBALISM Sandel introduces the principles of utilitarian philosopher, Jeremy Bentham, with a famous nineteenth century legal case involving a shipwrecked crew of four. After nineteen days lost at sea, the captain decides to kill the weakest amongst them, the young cabin boy, so that the rest can feed on his blood and body to survive. The case sets up a classroom debate about the moral validity of utilitarianism—and its doctrine that the right thing to do is whatever produces "the greatest good for the greatest number."

PART ONE: PUTTING A PRICE TAG ON LIFE Today, companies and governments often use Jeremy Benthams utilitarian logic under the name of cost-benefit analysis. Sandel presents some contemporary cases in which cost-benefit analysis was used to put a dollar value on human life. The cases give rise to several objections to the utilitarian logic of seeking the greatest good for the greatest number. Should we always give more weight to the happiness of a majority, even if the majority is cruel or ignoble? Is it possible to sum up and compare all values using a common measure like money? PART TWO: HOW TO MEASURE PLEASURE Sandel introduces JS Mill, a utilitarian philosopher who attempts to defend utilitarianism against the objections raised by critics of the doctrine. Mill argues that seeking the greatest good for the greatest number is compatible with protecting individual rights, and that utilitarianism can make room for a distinction between higher and lower pleasures. Mills idea is that the higher pleasure is always the pleasure preferred by a well-informed majority. Sandel tests this theory by playing video clips from three very different forms of entertainment: Shakespeares Hamlet, the reality show Fear Factor, and The Simpsons. Students debate which experience provides the higher pleasure, and whether Mills defense of utilitarianism is successful.

Video of Demopolis Lock filling it's chamber with water so a boat can be locked going upstream. These whirlpools are formed on the river that runs near Demopolis, Alabama. These are NOT naturally occurring whirlpools and instead occur because large pipes under the water suck water into the area behind me (not seen in video until I turn to walk off the bridge/platform area, it's the place to the left) and fill it with water so boats can easily navigate the river without having to load/unload boats onto higher/lower areas all the time. I wanted to record the entirety of this video because I never knew what a whirlpool looked like when it was forming. Honestly, I think that's the most interesting part - not the fact that they are A) So big B) TWO of them and C) THEY ARE SPINNING OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS. :D This video is meant for educational purposes. Teachers: Go ahead, use it in class. I know I've already had a couple of my high school teachers want to show it in class and I gave them the go ahead. I'd prefer if people not to reproduce this video content unless they are making an educational video in which this is being used as an example. Samantha woke at 6:30 am suddenly, I felt her sit up quickly. She said "Patrick, my water broke!" I said "Are you sure?" "Either that or I just peed a whole lot in bed" With that I called Wendy (Midwife) and left a message. Then I began to setup the living room for the birth. Soon I had everything setup, even the pool. Just no water yet. Wendy had called me by then and asked me to wait on the pool. Samantha had other ideas however. She said the baby was coming and I needed to fill the pool because she wanted in. So I began filling the pool and boiling a very large pot of water to adjust the temperature with. Samantha got in as soon as it was warm enough and said it helped a lot with the contractions. She got out to use the toilet but abandon the mission halfway through because she said the pain outside of the pool was too great. Invited guests began to arrive and congregate. CURRICULUM VITAE It all began in the year 2003, when I found out about a sale of painting accessories in one of the Maribor stores. I decided to quit smoking that year and kept all my cigarette's money in a special place. In the time of an abstinence I saved quite a lot of money and with it, I went to the store and bought a lot of painting material, all by an inspiration, as I did not even know what or how will I paint. From that day forth, this is my studio where I spend most of my time during days and because of creative insomnia sometimes even nights... Standing in a front of white canvas, after three hours of sleep, I let creativity and explosion in my head to take over, so that new paintings, styles and techniques can be born. I started with nothing, line beside line, connecting lines into shapes. In love with Maribor, I took my photo camera and went for a walk in the old town. Suddenly the streets were starting to show new dimensions. Only after a portray with nothing I did truly see the architecture of that time and acrylic colored building gave me the drift. That is how I have been understanding and discovering new possibilities, but also myself. My life changed after a health crisis, which also boosted my creativity. I am submitting an expose on the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, MI. I was recently hired to work for the season as an entertainer and looking forward to a terrific summer experience. Being a 40 minute drive from where I live from where the Double JJ is, I decided to rent a bed on their property in the 'minor' house instead of driving every day. The minor house is for workers 16 to 19. Although the house was going to be co-ed, the sexes would be separated by rooms, that in itself to me is not a very smart idea. Before being hired there was the matter of my second interview. At my first interview I was told to come back for a second interview in three weeks. So, I drive for 40 minutes three weeks later only to be told by one of the managers in the interview that he doesn't hire for the entertainment division but is there just to see who he can "scare off". That is all that happened for the second 'interview'. I should be paid for my time and my mileage. In trying to prepare for my summer I attempted to contact the hiring manager to ask some questions and soon found out she was harder to get a hold of than the President of the United States... Not joking it took a manager 3 days to call me back at one point, I have the caller ID's to prove it too. I was not told what to bring so I packed clothing and toiletries expecting towels, bedding and basics like toilet paper, paper towels and soap to be provided.
