Voyager
In 1977, NASA launched two small spacecraft called Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Weighing only 800 kgs each, they collected a wealth of scientific data and thousands of photographs of the four giant planets in our Solar System. After visiting Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1's trajectory left the ecliptic plane in order to photograph Saturn's moon Titan. This meant that Voyager 1 would not visit any other planets. However, Voyager 2 continued on to visit Uranus and Neptune. Still today, Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have visited these two "ice giants" and their moons. From an original CD: JUPITER NASA-VOYAGER SPACE SOUNDS (1990) BRAIN/MIND Research Fascinating recording of Jupiter sounds (electromagnetic "voices") by NASA-Voyager. The complex interactions of charged electromagnetic particles from the solar wind , planetary magnetosphere etc. create vibration "soundscapes". It sounds very interesting, even scary. Jupiter is mostly composed of hydrogen and helium. The entire planet is made of gas, with no solid surface under the atmosphere. The pressures and temperatures deep in Jupiter are so high that gases form a gradual transition into liquids which are gradually compressed into a metallic "plasma" in which the molecules have been stripped of their outer electrons. The winds of Jupiter are a thousand metres per second relative to the rotating interior. Jupiter's magnetic field is four thousand times stronger than Earth's, and is tipped by 11° degrees of axis spin. This causes the magnetic field to wobble, which has a profound effect on trapped electronically charged particles. This plasma of charged particles is accelerated beyond the magnetosphere of Jupiter to speeds of tens of thousands of kilometres per second. From NASA JPL marking the passage of the twin Voyager spacecraft beyond our solar system. We knew we were on a journey of discovery when we launched the Voyager spacecraft, but we had no idea how much there was to discover. We had a sense that we knew what it felt like to be Magellan or Columbus. Time after time we were surprised by seeing things that we had not expected or even imagined. From volcanoes erupting from the moon Io to the possibility of a liquid water ocean under the icy crust of Europa. Titan, where we found an atmosphere. Uranus' small moon Miranda, which had one of the most complex geologic surfaces we'd seen. Even at Neptune, Triton, 40 degrees above absolute zero, even there there were geysers erupting. It's the only spacecraft that's gone by Uranus. It's the only spacecraft that's gone by Neptune. Everything we know about those planets we know from Voyager. To see those first pictures coming in from the outer solar system, for the first time what had been a point of light in the sky was a place. I really credit the people that designed the mission, both the engineers and the mission planners and scientists because not only did they build an extremely robust, durable spacecraft, but they had the vision to send it on a path such that it could get out into interstellar space and carry a gold record. And here was this Noah's Ark of human culture that was being sent to the outer planets and then beyond to wander in the interstellar darkness for a billion <b>...</b>

Cold Steel Voyagers: "Preparedness Blades" by Nutnfancy
I was not enthusiastic to hear that the lightweight and fast pre-2010 models of Cold Steel Voyagers getting re-designed. They have been favorite blades here in TNP, integrating easily into all preparedness systems. Luckily they're even better than before and I was happy to be wrong. In this review, I show all three of these newer Voyager models in depth: the XL, L, and Medium (plain edged clips, my favorite ones). After hard cutting and some batoning with the Large Voyager, I was not surprised to find still a solid locking knife. The Demko Triad lock is a winner again and it solidly places these Zytel handled folders in the hard use category. The stop pins on these models are large and solid in this lock design, taking the mechanical shock instead of the locking bart. The lockback spring is perfectly balanced and allows for some rather fast deployments, surpising for lockbacks sometimes. The cylindrical thumbstuds are another improvement as well, offering easy and fast access left or right. The full flat ground blades arrive sharp and the clip blade shape has great belly, a good tip, and a preferred stone washed finish. In cardboard cutting the AUS8A steel dulled but retained a usable edge (shown). The handles now feature a higher traction pattern, 6061 heat treated aluminum liners, and deep finger guards. They are are secure in hand and comfortable. Sadly jimping is still lacking in these redesigns but traction is still pretty good. A large lanyard hole makes attaching a <b>...</b>
