Tyson 2009 - Documentary [Full length]

(2009) "Tyson" is acclaimed indie director James Toback's stylistically inventive portrait of a mesmerizing Mike Tyson. Toback allows Tyson to reveal himself without inhibition and with eloquence and a pervasive vulnerability. Through a mixture of original interviews and archival footage and photographs, a startlingly complex, fully-rounded human being emerges. The film ranges from Tyson's earliest memories of growing up on the mean streets of Brooklyn through his entry into the world of boxing, to his rollercoaster ride in the funhouse of worldwide fame and fortunes won and lost. It is the story of a legendary and uniquely controversial international athletic icon, a figure conjuring radical questions of race and class. In its depiction of a man rising from the most debased circumstances to unlimited heights, destroyed by his own hubris, "Tyson" emerges as a modern day version of classic Greek tragedy.

Neil deGrasse Tyson Testifies Before Senate Science Committee, March 7, 2012

Astrophysicist and space exploration advocate Neil deGrasse Tyson spoke on March 7, 2012 before the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Before Dr. Tyson spoke, NASA administrator Charles Bolden testified to this committee. You can watch that testimony at www.youtube.com Visit our web site at www.spaceksc.com. The event was webcast live and is in the public domain. UPDATE April 22, 2012 -- Lots of folks have posted comments lamenting the lack of interest by these Senators. What can you do? Join the National Space Society at www.nss.org. This is a nationwide grassroots space advocacy group. You might also want to read a book by Shawn Lawrence Otto titled, "Fool Me Twice Fighting the Assault on Science in America." His web site is www.shawnotto.com. Mr. Otto writes that less than 2% of Congress has a science background, and the overwhelming majority are lawyers trained to argue their client's position, not for the truth. Posting a complaint on YouTube doesn't solve the problem. Everyone needs to become involved. Demand that your representatives in Congress support science and properly fund NASA, otherwise you won't vote for them. That's the only way you'll get their attention. You might also want to watch Dr. Tyson's address to the National Space Symposium on April 17. It's on YouTube at http He specifically talks about the above video, at about 10 minutes into the recording. He learned that the Senators don't really care what he has to say.

Cosmic Quandaries with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson

www.youtube.com An out of this world event, Cosmic Quandaries, held at The Palladium in St. Petersburg at 7 pm on Wednesday, March 26th drew in an audience of nearly 800! With a one in a million chance of meeting one of only 6000 astrophysicists in the world, audience members were lined up in order to have the opportunity to ask Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson a question on any and all galactic wonders they may have. About St.Petersburg College: In 1927, St. Petersburg College (then known as St. Petersburg Junior College) became Florida's first private, non-profit, two-year school of higher learning located in downtown St. Petersburg. Full accreditation followed in 1931 and in 1948 SPC became a public college. In June 2001, SPJC officially became St. Petersburg College when Florida's governor signed legislation making it the first community college in Florida to offer four-year degrees. On Dec. 11, 2001, the college received the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' accreditation to offer courses leading to bachelor's degrees. In 2002, St. Petersburg College began offering courses leading to bachelor's degrees in Education, Nursing and Technology Management. The college's commitment to its two-year curriculum, which has earned it wide recognition and annually wins it high national rankings, remains as strong as ever. Today, SPC has eight learning sites throughout Pinellas County and recently became the first college in Florida to offer a four-year degree in Dental Hygiene ...

Neil deGrasse Tyson on "Intelligent Design" at Beyond Belief

This clip picks up where the one I'm responding to ("Gods retreat from cosmology") leaves off -- it is advisable that you watch that clip first. Both clips are from Neil deGrasse Tyson's presentation titled "The Perimeter of Ignorance" at Beyond Belief 2006. Among other things, Tyson asserts that the religiosity of some of history's greatest scientists and their willingness to invoke the philosophy of intelligent design limited the scope of their inquiry into the natural world, to the detriment of scientific progress in general.

Neil Degrasse Tyson debunks 2012 at the 2010 World Science Festival

Here Neil Degrasse Tyson talks of the Mayan 2012 planetary predictions. He talks about how the alignment of the Sun Earth and center of the galaxy is NOT a unique phenomenon. In fact, this alignment happens each and every year. So why is 2012 any different? He also explains many other non-scientific Mayan perceptions of cosmology. Including the observation that the Mayans thought the Earth was flat, had four corners, and was held up in space on the back of a crocodile and five trees of various bright colors. Which is in and of itself intriguing and culturally important but factually NOT TRUE.
