I've seen kudliks used traditionally by the Inuit, and I've also seen modern versions using a tuna can, some vegetable oil and a paper towel wick. But does it actually work? That's exactly what I intended on finding out. I saw an urban kudlik in one of Cody Lundin's books When All Hell Breaks Loose. Of course candle safety practices apply here-never leave a kudlik or Qulliq burning unattended, make sure there is enough ventilation in the room, and never sleep with one burning.

How do you protect a fish that crisscrosses oceans? The fishers of Pohnpei Island use the feeding patterns of seabirds to spot tuna. Commercial tuna fishers use a modern version of this method - helicopters. Overfishing is putting some tuna populations at risk of collapse. Saving these fish is made more difficult by the great distances these fish swim and the high price they fetch.

Mind the Gap, an analysis of worldwide trade in Mediterranean bluefin tuna, shows a significant gap in the trade of bluefin tuna, compared to what can be caught legally every year. In 2008, the gap between the trade and quota was 31 percent. By 2010, that gap grew to 141 percent. But solutions exist. Pew is calling for an electronic catch documentation system to replace the current paper system, to allow for better tracking and monitoring of the bluefin tuna trade. A simple one string "diddley bo" lap slide guitar made from an old piece of wood a couple of nails, a Piezo Transducer 273-073 from Radio Shack, a 1/4 mono input plug, a piece of wood for the bridge, a rubber band, a small tin can, a roll of tape and one old guitar string. The Piezo Transducer 273-073 cost about $2 at Radio Shack, I also got the 1/4 mono input plug and extra wire at Radio Shack. . . everything else I found around the house. The tin can originally housed cough drops, but you can use a tuna can or snuff can or any number similar of items. I removed the Piezo Transducer from it's plastic shell and tape it into the tin can. I place the guitar bridge (small piece of wood) on top of this. You can tune the thing by moving the bridge up and down the neck of the guitar Nothing about this is original, it's just my version of a basic Diddley Bo

Tsukiji fish market (築地市場, Tsukiji shijō) is the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world and also one of the largest wholesale food markets of any kind. The market is located in Tsukiji in central Tokyo. The market handles more than 400 different types of seafood from tiny sardines to 300kg tuna, from cheap seaweed to the most expensive caviar. Overall, more than 700000 metric tons of seafood are handled every year at the three seafood markets in Tokyo, with a total value in excess of 600 billion yen (approximately 5.5 billion US dollars). Tsukiji alone handles over 2000 metric tons of seafood per day. The number of registered employees varies from 60000 to 65000, including wholesalers, accountants, auctioneers, company officials, and distributors. The market opens most mornings except Sundays and holidays and some infrequent closing days in the week at 3:00 am with the arrival of the products by ship, truck and plane from all over the world. Particularly impressive is the unloading of tons of frozen tuna. The auctions start around 5:20 am Bidding can only be done by licensed participants. The auctions usually end around 7:00 am Afterward, the purchased fish is either loaded onto trucks to be shipped to the next destination or on small carts and moved to the many shops inside the market. There the shop owners cut and prepare the products for retail. Official homepage: www.tsukiji-market.or.jp Soundtrack "Double Helix" by Antimatterman www.antimatterman <b>...</b>
