Tolkien Reading Day - Riders of Rohan - Lonely Mountain Band - Lament of Eorl the Young

A Tolkien Reading Day salute from the Lonely Mountain Band. "One of my favorite passages of Lord of the Rings is when Aragorn introduces the Riders of Rohan with the fragmentary poem entitled, 'Lament of Eorl the Young'. Tolkien adapted this from an older Old English poem called 'the Wanderer', and I then adapted it into song for acoustic guitar and vocal." Happy Tolkien Reading Day! This is a collection of records of the Pembroke College in Oxford dated 1929. It's called the "Linguaphone conversational course" and contains the oldest recording of Tolkien ever made. I'm sorry for the bad quality of this record player but I have only this at home. Maybe when I will have time I will rip it in higher quality. ENJOY! It's incredible what you can find in your cellar that you didn't know that was there!

JRR Tolkien on Film

There are two clips here spliced together of JRR Tolkien talking on film. In the first from 1968, he talks about "The Lord of the Rings" books and gives some detail about where some of the ideas for characters came from in ancient stories. In the second (date unknown) he mentions the first time he ever wrote down the idea for "The Hobbit". The picture is better in the first clip--the audio is better in the second. Both clips are of very poor quality however. Tolkien was a member of the Inklings, a literary group of friends and writers associated with Oxford University and of which CS Lewis was the principal member. Tolkien and Dyson together were instrumental in introducing Lewis to Christianity.

The Tolkien Ensemble - Song of Durin

´These are not holes,´said Gimli. ´This is the great realm and city of the Dwarrowdelf. And of old it was not darksome, but full of light and splenour, as is still remembered in our songs.´ He rose and standing in the dark he began to chant in a deep voice, while the echoes ran away into the roof. The world was young, the mountains green, No stain yet on the Moon was seen, No words were laid on stream or stone When Durin woke and walked alone. He named the nameless hills and dells; He drank from yet untasted wells; He stooped and looked in Mirrormere, And saw a crown of stars appear, As gems upon a silver thread, Above the shadows of his head. The world was fair, the mountains tall, In Elder Days before the fall Of mighty kings in Nargothrond And Gondolin, who now beyond The Western Seas have passed away: The world was fair in Durin's Day. A king he was on carven throne In many-pillared halls of stone With golden roof and silver floor, And runes of power upon the door. The light of sun and star and moon In shining lamps of crystal hewn Undimmed by cloud or shade of night There shone for ever fair and bright. There hammer on the anvil smote, There chisel clove, and graver wrote; There forged was blade, and bound was hilt; The delver mined, the mason built. There beryl, pearl, and opal pale, And metal wrought like fishes' mail, Buckler and corslet, axe and sword, And shining spears were laid in hoard. Unwearied then were Durin's folk; Beneath the mountains music woke: The ...

JRR Tolkien reciting "Namárië"

This is a rare recording of JRR Tolkien from 1952, in which he recites the Quenya poem "Namárië", famously sung by Galadriel in the chapter "Farewell to Lórien" in "The Lord of the Rings". "Ai! laurië lantar lassi súrinen, yéni únótimë ve rámar aldaron! Yéni ve lintë yuldar avánier mi oromardi lisse-miruvóreva Andúnë pella , Vardo tellumar nu luini yassen tintilar i eleni ómaryo airetári -lírinen. Sí man i yulma nin enquantuva? Sí vanwa ná, Rómello vanwa, Valimar! Namárië! Nai hiruvalyë Valimar. Nai elyë hiruva. Namárië!" "Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind, long years numberless as the wings of trees! The long years have passed like swift draughts of the sweet mead in lofty halls beyond the West, beneath the blue vaults of Varda wherein the stars tremble in the voice of her song, holy and queenly. Who now shall refill the cup for me? For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the stars, from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds and all paths are drowned deep in shadow; and out of a grey country darkness lies on the foaming waves between us, and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever. Now lost, lost to those of the East is Valimar! Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar! Maybe even thou shalt find it! Farewell!" Brought to you by www.chamber-of-records.com

Tolkien a chrześcijaństwo

"Zaczniemy zaśpiewaniem kolędy i krótką modlitwą. Później będzie nieco dłuższy dwugłos - świeckiego i księdza na temat odniesień do chrześcijaństwa w odpowiednim tomie cyklu" - wyjaśnia ks. Misiak. Później zaplanowana jest klubowa projekcja filmowej adaptacji i dyskusja. Spotkania "Władca Pierścieni w Fatimie" odbędą się 28, 29 i 30 grudnia o godz. 10.00 w salce przy kościele Matki Boskiej Fatimskiej.
