83% of Pakistan's total water comes within the short period of 80 days. Instead of utilizing this vital resource (water) for the welfare of our nation (irrigation needs, drinkable water, electricity, ...), due to mismanagement, we are suffering huge losses from floods every year (loss of human lives, properties, infrastructure, and agricultural).

[Channel 4 News] China's Three Gorges Dam Project

Lindsey Hilsum reports (2008.01.14) on how China's Three Gorges Dam is bedevilled by landslips and pollution. "The project could lead to catastrophe". Not the words of a dissident environmentalist, but the official Chinese news agency in a story about the Three Gorges Dam. For the first time since the project was started in the 1980s, government scientists have started to express concern about landslides and water pollution caused by the biggest dam in the world. But the government also wants to tout the Three Gorges Dam as China's greatest source of renewable energy.

Three Gorges Dam - China

The Three Gorges Dam in China is the world's largest and most expensive hydropower project, and seen by the Chinese government as a one of the country's most prestigious undertakings. The immense project started in 1993 and was completed a decade later. Today, it is said to have an approximate generating capacity of 20000 Megawatt (MW). Regular concerns, however, are voiced in both international and domestic media, particularly about the large number of people that had to be relocated, the environmental costs, and more recently the safety of the dam. This informative video shows some of the different perspectives that exist on the project. All material was originally shot with a Canon HV20, with the exception of four pictures that were integrated in the clip. Floods Test China's Three Gorges Dam

Heavy rains across southern China is pushing the Three Gorges Dam to the limit. Concerns are growing over whether the massive dam can control flooding on the Yangtze River. Water levels in the dam have reached their highest since 1998, forcing the evacuation of thousands. China's massive Three Gorges dam may overflow as torrential rains swell the rivers that feed it. According to state-run media, the flow of water to the giant reservoir on the Yangtze River reached its peak on Tuesday morning. The water level in the dam was even higher than in 1998 when devastating floods killed over 4000 people and forced some 18 million to relocate. The water level in the dam had reached 500 feet, 82 feet short of its maximum capacity. Environmentalists warn the reservoir could turn into a cesspool of sewage and chemicals or silt up. Much of southern China has been suffering flooding and landslides after weeks of torrential downpours. Thousands of people have been evacuated along the Yangtze and its tributaries as water flooded cities and villages alike. At least 146 people have died since the start of this month as a result of the rains, and another 40 are missing. Altogether over 38 million people have been affected and more than 1.3 million have had to be evacuated.

Three Gorges Dam Operator Plans Four More Dams on Yangzi River

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Follow us on Facebook ☛ facebook.com The Three Gorges Dam project is hailed as a wonder by the Chinese regime, yet at the same time it's widely criticized for damaging the environment, submerging historical sites and forcing residents to re-locate. Now the company behind the project is planning four more dams on the Yangzi river, with work on the first two already underway. The operator of China's Three Gorges Dam, the China Three Gorges Dam Corporation, is planning four more hydroelectric dams on the upper reaches of the Yangzi river. The new dams will generate a total of 43 gigawatts of electricity—twice what the current dam produces. Construction started on the original Three Gorges Dam in 1993 and it started generating power in 2008. The project cost over 22-billion US dollars. Although the Chinese regime hails the dam as a wonder of the world, critics point out that the project forced 1.5-million people to re-locate and left countless historical sites in the Three Gorges submerged under water. In addition, experts have warned of the potential for mudslides and other geological problems due to the weight of the massive amount of water in the dam's reservoir. Like the original Three Gorges Dam, plans for new dams have drawn criticism from environmentalists in China such as Yang Yong. Yang warns of several problems the new dams could lead to. Three Gorges Dam Prevents Catastrophic Flooding

Chinese state media says its controversial Three Gorges dam has prevented catastrophic flooding on the Yangtze River. Heavy rain and other disasters have killed more than 700 people this year alone. China's controversial Three Gorges dam project seems to be fulfilling one of its goals, after helping prevent catastrophic flooding on the Yangtze River. Much of southern and central China has been suffering flooding after weeks of torrential rain. But when the Three Gorges dam reached its peak on Tuesday, the gates successfully held water in the huge reservoir, while releasing a smaller amount, to avoid it surging down river. Flooding is common in southern China during the annual rainy season, though this year has been the worst for some areas in decades. Water has flooded cities and villages alike, and heavy rains have caused land and mudslides across the region. State media reported that more than 700 people have died this year from flooding and 347 people are still missing. Approximately 113 million people have been affected and the direct economic loss has been 21 billion US dollars.

Floating Trash Threatens to Clog Three Gorges Dam

Torrential rains have washed massive amounts of trash down the Yangtze river. So much trash has collected that engineers are worried it could clog the gates of the much touted Three Gorges Dam. Here's that story. A 12-acre flotilla of garbage has formed in front of the Three Gorges Dam on China's Yangtze river. And with ever more trash piling up, engineers are worried it will clog the gates of the dam. Torrential rains have caused massive flooding in the region, increasing the flow of trash down river. Some areas are covered with a layer of trash so thick it's possible to walk on the river. Nearly three tons of waste is being removed from the dam every day, but that may not be enough to keep up with the flow of garbage. The China Three Gorges Dam Corporation already spends reportedly $1.5 million US dollars a year on removing trash from the river. The roughly 150 million people who live in the cities and towns up river from the dam dump their waste directly into the river because of inadequate municipal trash facilities. The Three Gorges Dam is highly prized by the Chinese Communist Party for its capacity to generate large amounts of electricity. But critics of the dam say it has caused severe ecological damage to the area, has increased the likelihood of landslides, and has displaced millions of people.

Three Gorges Dam

The Three Gorges Dam 长江三峡大坝長江三峽大壩is a hydroelectric dam that spans the Yangtze River by the town of Sandouping, located in the Yiling District of Yichang, in Hubei province, China. The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest capacity hydroelectric power station with a total generating capacity of 18200 MW. The dam body was completed in 2006. Except for a ship lift, the originally planned components of the project were completed on October 30, 2008, when the 26th turbine in the shore plant began commercial operation. Each turbine has a capacity of 700 MW. Six additional turbines in the underground power plant are not expected to become fully operational until 2012. Coupling the dam's thirty-two main turbines with two smaller generators (50 MW each) to power the plant itself, the total electric generating capacity of the dam will eventually reach 22500 MW. As well as producing electricity, the dam increases the Yangtze River's shipping capacity, and reduces the potential for floods downstream by providing flood storage space. The Chinese government regards the project as a historic engineering, social and economic success, with the design of state-of-the-art large turbines, and a move toward limiting greenhouse gas emissions. However, the dam flooded archaeological and cultural sites and displaced some 1.3 million people, and is causing significant ecological changes, including an increased risk of landslides. The dam has been a controversial topic both in China ...

Chinese Authorities Admit Three Gorges Dam has Problems

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ facebook.com After praising the Three Gorges Dam for years, the Chinese regime has admitted the world's biggest hydroelectric dam has caused big problems. The State Council said on Wednesday there's an urgent need to address environmental problems, the wellbeing of relocated residents and the risk of geological disasters associated with the project. Located in China's Hubei Province, the 23-billion dollar project was launched in 1993 and took 17 years to build. Vast stretches of land have been flooded and 1.4 million people had to be relocated. Critics have pointed out the added danger of geological disasters, like mudslides and landslides caused by the weight of such a huge body of water on its surroundings. Pollution also flows from the reservoir downstream to the Yangtze River's densely populated area, threatening the quality of drinking water. The Three Gorges Dam has 26 hydropower generators with six more to be installed next year.

China's Three Gorges Dam : an environmental disaster in the making?

China's Three Gorges Dam, due to be completed in November and already the biggest in the world, is getting bigger every day on all fronts. While officially the Chinese government said it has spent 20 billion euro on building the 185-metre dam and a reservoir stretching more than 600 kilometres, local critics and foreign observers said the real figure could be more than twice that amount, and that's just in the construction phase. A new figure emerged in local media, indicating that nearly 10 billion euro would have to be spent over the next 10 years to manage the myriad social and environmental problems that have risen alongside the dam's concrete wall. Watch this longer report from Belgian VRT correspondent in China Tom Van de Weghe about the environmental problems caused by the Three Gorges Dam.
