Greatest Notes from the Greatest Tenors

My assembly of what and whom I find to be the greatest higher-register notes of the tenors of the 20th and early 21st centuries. This compilation is just MY opinion; mean comments will be deleted and their authors will be blocked. --------------------------------------- 1.) An exhilarating A4 by Plácido Domingo in the zarzuela aria "No puede ser" from "La tabernera del puerto" by Pablo Sorozábal. In my opinion, Domingo is the undisputed king of the A's. 2.) A wonderfully colored Bb4 by Roberto Alagna in "Pourquoi me réveiller?" from "Werther" by Jules Massenet. 3.) Plácido Domingo sings a glorious Bb4 in "Recondita armonia" from "Tosca" by Giacomo Puccini. 4.) Franco Corelli sings an extremely dramatic B4 in "Nessun dorma" from "Turandot" by Giacomo Puccini. The most explosive B I've ever heard. 5.) Luciano Pavarotti belts a resonant B4 in "La donna è mobile" from "Rigoletto" by Giuseppe Verdi. 6.) José Carreras sings an amazingly beautiful B4, also in "Nessun dorma." His voice isn't particularly suited for this role, but this B is perhaps my favorite B ever. The warmth of the note is just amazing. 7.) Jussi Björling gives one of his perfect C5's in "Che gelida manina" from "La bohème" by Giacomo Puccini. 8.) Plácido Domingo sings a short but perfectly placed and very taut C5 in "Salut, demeure" from "Faust" by Charles Gounod. 9.) Andrea Bocelli sings one of the most longly sustained, perfectly placed, and downright thrilling C5's I've ever heard in "Di quella pira" from ...

The Soul of Ben Webster - His Emotional Tenor Saxophone

Teddy Wilson, piano; Ben Webster, tenor saxophone. Look carefully after Teddy Wilson's solo and you'll see tears streaming down Ben's cheek. Benjamin Francis Webster, 27 March 1909, Kansas City, Missouri, USA, d. 20 September 1973, Amsterdam, Netherlands. After studying violin and piano, and beginning his professional career on the latter instrument, Webster took up the tenor saxophone around 1930. He quickly became adept on this instrument; within a year he was playing with Bennie Moten and later worked with Andy Kirk and Fletcher Henderson. In the mid-30s he also played briefly with numerous bands mostly in and around New York, including spells with Duke Ellington. In 1940 he became a permanent member of the Ellington band, where he soon became one of its most popular and imitated soloists. Although he was with the band for only three years, he had enormous influence upon it, both through his presence, which galvanized his section-mates, and by his legacy. Thereafter, any new tenor saxophonist felt obliged to play like Webster until they were established enough to exert their own personalities. After leaving Ellington, he led a small group for club and record sessions and also played with several small groups led by artists such as Stuff Smith and Henry 'Red' Allen. In the late 40s he rejoined Ellington for a short stay, then played with Jazz At The Philharmonic. From the 50s and on throughout the rest of his life, he worked mostly as a single, touring extensively ...

Una Furtiva Lagrima - Enrico Caruso 1904

Digitally remastered version of a recording from the 1st of February 1904 (room 826, Carnegie Hall, NY). You may want to look at my non-profit website for more Caruso info: www.enricocaruso.dk (English). I have uploaded all of Caruso's recordings (in different versions there. I feel it is important to place this recording in its proper perspective - before you compare Caruso with other later tenors. Caruso had 2-3 years of formal schooling. His native language was Neapolitan Italian, which is'nt Italian. His whole life he had troubles reading - in any language. Still he spoke some 7 languages. The singing lessons he received were rudimentary at best. And still he moves the hearts of those who actually listen to his voice (.. more than a century later). Why? In my opinion because he was an empathetic genious. Able to communicate feelings through his singing like very few others after him. Una furtiva lagrima (A furtive tear) is the romanza from Act II, Scene 2 of the Italian opera, L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love) by Gaetano Donizetti. It is sung by Nemorino (Caruso) when he finds that the love potion he bought to win his dream lady's heart, Adina, works. Nemorino is in love with Adina, but she isn't interested in a relationship with an innocent, rustic man. To win her heart, Nemorino buys a "love potion" with all the money he has in his pocket. The "love potion" is actually a cheap red wine sold by a con business traveler. But when he sees Adina weeping, he knows ...

Ben Webster (Tenor Sax) - Over The Rainbow

No one can play a ballard on the tenor sax like Ben Webster, so much from the heart, this is while he was in the UK in the 1960's, also a young Stan Tracy on piano. Benjamin Francis Webster (March 27, 1909 -- September 20, 1973), Webster, born in Kansas City, Missouri, was considered one of the three most important "swing tenors" along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. Known affectionately as "The Brute",he had a tough, raspy, and brutal tone on stomps (with his own distinctive growls), yet on ballads he played with warmth and sentiment. Stylistically he was indebted to alto star Johnny Hodges, who, he said, taught him to play his instrument.

(17 1/2 cm x 6 cm x 3 1/4 cm) Range: Tenor F (E4-G5) Weight: 3 1/4 oz. ____________R EVIEW _ SUMMAR Y____________ DESIGN - Finely crafted - Beautiful Walnut Grain (unique to each ocarina) - No cord or neckstrap DURABILITY - Wooden, so it will survive a fall much better than most clay ocarinas - Mr. Hind warns against extreme heat or cold, which may warp the wood and ruin the ocarina WEIGHT - Extremely light at about 3 ounces (especially when compared to clay ocarinas of same size) PLAYABILITY - Fingerings similar to 10 OR 12 hole transverse ocarinas, with two exceptions (Left Pinky is used for one pitch below tonic and each thumbhole plays a semitone) - Uses same breath pressure for all pitches - Very sensitive SOUND - Rich, Warm Tone (from lowest to highest pitches) - Pleasant lower octave range - Not very loud, which is good for those who are sensitive to the louder/higher pitched Alto and Sopranos Overall, if you're looking for a lower range Ocarina with a beautiful warm tone, the Walnut Tenor would be an excellent choice! ------------------------------------ Featured Songs: - Bach's Minuet (in F, lol). - Greensleeves (What Child is This) - Serenade of Water (from LoZ: OoT)

Joseph Calleja - The Maltese Tenor

www.deccaclassics.com The career of Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja seems to have no limits, with performances at the world's greatest opera houses and acclaim for the lyrical warmth of his singing from the press and public alike. His opera and concert successes are now crowned by his third recording on Decca Classics. Joseph Calleja is an enthusiastic ambassador for Malta, where he still lives - an island with a proud operatic tradition. He is always happy to return to his friends, family and young children and finds inspiration from life near the sea. "The Maltese Tenor" captures the development of his art and presents him in some of the roles he is currently performing. It includes much-loved Puccini arias from Tosca and La Bohème alongside French arias by Massenet, Gounod, Offenbach, and Bizet. Also included are love duets from La Bohème and Bizet's Les Pêcheurs des perles, for which Joseph Calleja is joined by newly signed Decca soprano Aleksandra Kurzak − ahead of her own Decca debut album.
