Underrated, but never forgotten. Black Tambourine is by far one of the best bands to emerge by incorporating a perfect blend of fuzz and pop. I still remember buying a crayon colored sleeve 7" (By Tomorrow) at Vinyl Ink so long ago when I lived in Maryland. I was a fan for life by the time Throw Aggi Off The Bridge was released. These songs still give me goose bumps after all these years. Sooo good!

The Byrds SECOND time on TV, EVER! The band made their televison debut just three days before this broadcast, 5/8/65 on "Shivaree". This is a very interesting video for many reasons. First, Gene Clark is on a Fender Xll 12 string guitar (As opposed to Tambourine), Gene & David's vocal mics are not in the mix until the second chorus. AND; the coolest anecdote of all: If you listen carefully, you can hear Gene Clark's barritone vocal part in the second chorus during "In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you". This part was NOT on the record; reason being is that Gene's vocals were on the same track as Leon Russell's electric piano, which was taken out of the mix. The vocals here are LIVE, while the music is the recorded backing track. Another noteworthy point; Roger McGuinn isn't even pretending to "Sinc" his guitar part correctly, by playing his famous "Scruggsy picking style", but rather strumming in earnest. :-) Watch Gene Clark butt in on Frankie Avalon!! The Byrds-Turn!/Rhymney/Tambourine Man-10/19/65
COMPLETELY LIVE performance from "The Big...", including David McCallum's intro!! A very rare treat; as this is one of only TWO COMPLETELY LIVE performances that the "Original 5" ever did on TV. On the Ed Sullivan show "Turn!" was live, but "Mr. Tambourine Man" was lip synched. The original Byrds in all their glory, and their weaknessess, are on good display here. Exciting because it's all live, and also quite "Jagged" & "Stiff" sounding, as the "Original 5" was never known for their "Tight Live Act", the primitive sound systems of the day notwithstanding. Rough rythym section, Michael Clarke is playing the songs slow, Gene Clark is playing the tambourine without much sense of metre or time, etc. In Gene's defense, I would say that he resented the Tambourine, after getting "Stuck" with it when Crosby took the guitar out of hands. EQUALLY wonderful are the AMAZING audience shots; capturing the fun, exuberance, and exhileration of a mid '60's rock concert. That's what I'm talkin' about, baby. This show was filmed on October 19, 1965, and was shown on TV in early 1966. A VERY HUMOUROUS scene comes at 5:09. As the camera pans past all the girls faces, not knowing quite how to react to this song about a Welsh coal mining disaster, and ends on the face of a jealous boyfriend! Capturing The Byrds at the peak of their affluence, this is a wonderful, live look at pop history. The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man 1965 "Mr. Tambourine Man" is a song written and performed by Bob Dylan, which was released on his 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home (see 1965 in music). The Byrds also recorded a version of the song that was released as their first single on Columbia Records and which reached #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the UK Singles Chart. The Byrds' version was also the title track of their first album, Mr. Tambourine Man.
