The Straight Poop on Sustainable Farming

Peak Moment 211: Innovative farmer Joel Salatin says sustainable agriculture requires both perennials (like native grasses) and herbivores (like cattle) to build soil. Mimicking patterns from nature, this maverick Virginia farmer rotates cattle followed by chickens into short-term pasture enclosures, where their poop fertilizes the earth. His new book "Folks, This Ain't Normal" is a critique of the industrial food system, and envisions a future where humans are participants in a regenerative, sustaining community of abundance. Living Mulch Sustainable Farming near Missoula

www.permies.com Helen Atthowe, Missoula County Horticulturist (1995-2010) http speaks about a variety of experiments with living mulch. She covers minimum till, no till and full till. Helen talks about creating beneficial insect habitats: bees, parasitic wasps, (in april she was experiencing a 1-to-1 ratio of parasitized aphids to non parasitized aphids), spiders, ground beetles ... Broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage yields are explored. Using three foot wide raised beds. The minimum till was done with a single shank chisel plow followed by a light tilling with a tiller/rotovator. Living mulches experimented with include clover which contributes nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but also competes with the production crop. The trick is to find the balance and get the best of all worlds. Music by Jimmy Pardo

Pamela Ronald (UC Davis) Part 1: Sustainable agriculture with English Subtitles

www.ibioseminars.org In Part 1 of her lecture, Ronald emphasizes the importance of developing sustainable agricultural practices that will allow the world's population to be fed without destroying the Earth. Ronald demonstrates that modern genetics approaches have facilitated development of new crop varieties that can increase crop yields while reducing insecticide use. She proposes that the judicious incorporation of two important strands of agriculture—agricultural biotechnology and agroecological practices—is key to helping feed the growing population and she provides compelling examples to support her stand. In Part 2, Ronald describes work from her lab that led to the discovery of a plant sensor of conserved microbial signatures called XA21. Subsequent discoveries in other laboratories revealed that mammals carry very similar receptors called TOLL-like receptors. The XA21 receptor recognizes a sulfated peptide conserved across a broad class of bacteria. Ronald's group has shown that the biological function of this molecule is to facilitate bacterial cell-cell communication. Ronald also describes exciting work that resulted in the development of rice strains that will survive and bear crop even after extended periods of submergence; a huge help to rice farmers in flood prone regions of the world.

Fair Trade: Protecting the Environment

Fair Trade is not just about earning a higher price for the harvest, it's about learning techniques for sustainable agriculture that help protect the environment and make the world a better place for future generations. To become Fair Trade Certified, farms must adhere to a strict set of environmental standards, including but not limited to: no use of GMO's, minimal and safe use of chemicals, elimination of slash and burn techniques and responsible disposal of waste and water runoff. These standards not only ensure sustainable production practices, but also worker health and safety. Additionally, while Fair Trade does not require organic certification, it does encourage organic conversion to further enhance environmental commitment.

SHARE El Salvador: Sustainable Agriculture in San Simon

El Salvador is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world facing climate change, and food security is a serious issue for thousands of subsistence rural farmers and their families. Organic methods, native seeds, community organization and disaster preparedness are all part of the solution for communities like San Simon, Usulutan, El Salvador. In this video, community leaders share their efforts to recuperate native seeds, organize their community, learn about organic farming, and prepare for the next disaster. Unfortunately, in October 2011 this disaster struck: torrential rains associated with Tropical Depression 12E wrought havoc on El Salvador, causing flooding, mudslides, and forcing the evacuation of over 50000. Over 150 million pounds of basic grains -- the beans and tortillas of every day -- were lost. Organized communities like San Simon are the best prepared to face these disasters, access government and non-government aid, and rebuild for the future. Sustainability in modern farming part 1

Since early Spring, Farmers Weekly has been visiting Adam Henson's Gloucestershire farm, exploring the theme of sustainability in modern farming. The first programme in the series asks "What does sustainable farming actually mean?" In this series of articles we're trying to explore just what that familiar buzzword means when it gets mud on its boots. So far, we've looked at what true environmental sustainability means, looked critically at many modern arable farming practices, and explored how diversification has made businesses more sustainable, too.

Biospharms - Sustainable Agriculture Mini Farming

A Biospharm is a sustainable agriculture mini farm capable of sustaining a family through solar power, rain water cisterns, complimentary animal ecosystems, small herds, fruit trees, and vegetable gardening. The name is a combination of biosphere and farm. The "ph" was kept, because this is not the kind of large scale farming that most people think of. It's small scale agriculture for personal consumption, not for comercial purposes. Biospharm communities are under construction right now, and more videos will be coming soon. We've designed the entire community concept to be affordable for literally just about anyone. Subscribe to this chanel to keep up to date on the latest developments. We'll be explaining the concepts and appropriate technologies in detail shortly. PM us if you think you may be a pharmer at heart, or if you have questions about any of the material we cover. Sustainable Winter Agriculture

Making the growing season grow longer, that's the idea for Daphne Yannakakis, an organic farmer in western Colorado. Along with husband Don Lareau on Zephyros Farm, they're growing vegetables in wintertime as part of a study by Colorado State University. The vegetables grow under the protection of unheated green houses called high tunnels, which hold in heat stored by the Earth at night and capture solar heat during the day. They also provide protection from the wind. These farmers plant a variety of cold hardy vegetables at monthly intervals and record weather data electronically with custom software. The data is collected from five farms across Colorado and will be compiled and made available to other small-scale farmers. Funded by the US Department of Agriculture the program is called and here's a mouthful: the sustainable agriculture research and education program or SARE. The study is intended to help small-scale farmers in the Rocky Mountains remain productive and profitable through much of the winter by utilizing high tunnels. Even when outside temperatures reach sub-zero extremes these simple structures allow vegetables to survive harsh winter conditions and enable farmers to grow more. "High Tunnels are cold frames. They're very low-tech greenhouses without any supplemental heating or cooling in them," said Frank Stonaker of Colorado State University. "They allow growers to extend their growing season at least a month on each end of the frost-free period." By ...

How to feed the world in 2050: actions in a changing climate

World Scientists Urge Key Actions for Achieving Food Security in a Changing Climate ccafs.cgiar.org To achieve food security in a changing climate, the global community must operate within three limits: the quantity of food that can be produced under a given climate; the quantity needed by a growing and changing population; and the effect of food production on the climate. At present the planet operates outside that safe space, as witnessed by the enormous number of people who are undernourished. If current trends in population growth, diets, crop yields and climate change continue, the world will still be outside this 'safe operating space' in 2050. Humanity must urgently work to enlarge the safe space and also move the planet into the safe space. The Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change has a produced a set of concrete policy actions to transform the food system.
