Magnetic storm alerts. Sunspot AR1471 erupted on May 7th, producing an M1-class solar flare and an Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME). According to a forecast track prepared by analysts at the Goddard Space Weather lab, the cloud will reach Earth on May 9th at 13:40 UT (+/- 7 hours). X-ray Solar Flares 6-hr max: C7 1726 UT May07 24-hr: M1 1431 UT May07 6-hr max: C1 0836 UT May08 24-hr: C1 0836 UT May08 Interplanetary Magnetic Field Btotal: 5.7 nT Bz: 1.5 nT south During the years around solar maximum (2000 and 2001 are good examples) spots pepper the face of the Sun. Sunspots are places where intense magnetic loops -- hundreds of times stronger than the ambient dipole field -- poke through the photosphere. Sunspot magnetic fields overwhelm the underlying dipole; as a result, the Sun's magnetic field near the surface of the star becomes tangled and complicated. According to Space Weather, Sunspot 1476 poses a threat for X-class solar flares. SOLAR ACTIVITY INTENSIFIES: Huge sunspot AR1476 is crackling with M-class solar flares and appears to be on the verge of producing something even stronger. The sunspot's 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field harbors energy for X-class flares, the most powerful kind. Earth is entering the line of fire as the sunspot rotates across the face of the sun. Earlier today, amateur astronomer Thomas Ashcraft of New Mexico detected strong shortwave radio bursts coming from the sunspot. "The strongest burst so far occured around 1631 UT on May 9th," reports Ashcraft. "I am observing at 28 MHz and 21.1 MHz. As I send this note I am hearing more bursting, indicating powerful magnetic dynamism within active region 1476." Solar radio bursts are caused by plasma instabilities that ripple through the sun's atmosphere in the aftermath of powerful flares. With AR1476 poised for more eruptions, this 'radio activity' is likely to continue for days. Solar flare alerts: text, phone. A new sunspot that recently emerged on the eastern limb of the sun is now coming into view of Earth. According to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center and the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory, sunspot AR1476 is over 60000 miles wide, or a dozen times wider than our entire planet, and poses a serious threat for Earth-directed solar flares in the next several days. AR1476 will come into direct alignment with the Earth in a few days and ...

INCOMING CME: A coronal mass ejection (CME) that flew off the sun's western limb on May 17th might hit Earth after all. NOAA forecasters say a shock wave from the blast could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on May 18th to 20th. The CME, was propelled by an M5-class solar flare from departing sunspot AR1476. The speckles in the movie are caused by energetic protons hitting the observatory's detector. Those protons may have been accelerated in part by the shock wave en route to Earth. According to NOAA, there is a 40% chance of minor geomagnetic storms and a 15% chance of strong storms when the shock arrives. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. Telescopes spotted the first blemish on the sun in 1611. While the sun had long been thought—at least in the Western world—to be an unchanging, "perfect" orb, sky-watchers observed black sunspots on the sun's surface that circled around as with the sun's rotation. The number of sunspots increase and decrease over time in a regular, approximately 11-year cycle, called the sunspot cycle. The exact length of the cycle can vary. It has been as short as eight years and as long as fourteen, but the number of sunspots always increases over time, and then returns to low again. More sunspots mean increased solar activity, when great blooms of radiation known as solar flares or bursts of solar material known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs) shoot off the sun's surface. The highest number of sun spots in any given cycle is designated "solar maximum," while the lowest number is designated "solar minimum." Each cycle varies dramatically in intensity with some solar maxima being so low as to be almost indistinguishable from the preceding minimum. One such set of cycles famously occurred from 1645 to 1715 and is known as the Maunder Minimum. Those who watched the sun could count enough change in sunspot number that they could still track cycles, but the overall sunspot number dropped drastically. One thirty-year period showed only 30 sunspots, one thousandth of what is typically seen. The timing of the Maunder Minimum corresponded to what's called the Little Ice Age in Europe—a time of ...

ANOTHER CME FROM SUNSPOT AR1429: Transiting the farside of the sun, never-say-die sunspot AR1429 erupted during the late hours of March 26th, producing its 11th major CME. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) photographed the cloud flying over the sun's eastern limb. According to a forecast track prepared by analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, the CME will hit two spacecraft, STEREO-B and Spitzer, on March 28th. Earth is not in the line of fire. This event shows that AR1429, the source of several strong geomagnetic storms in early March, is still active. It will begin turning back toward our planet about a week from now. Stay tuned. GEOMAGNETIC OUTLOOK: NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% to 45% chance of strong geomagnetic storms around the poles on March 28-29 in response to an incoming solar wind stream. Alex Ansary UNN Newsroom September 27, 2011 Today NASA today said a strong-to-severe geomagnetic storm is in progress following a massive X 1.9 solar flare and coronal mass ejection (CME). The sunspot is 60000 miles in diameter, many times bigger than the earth. The flare erupted from sunspot region 1302 on Saturday September 24 and triggering spectacular auroras and electromagnetic storms across the North America. On the 26th, NASA detected a strong compression of Earth's magnetic field. Satellites above could now be directly exposed to solar wind plasma. Sky watchers in many states in the northern hemisphere are going to witness diverse auroras after nightfall. Travis Novitsky took this picture of the night sky from his home in Northeastern Minnesota...he made note of vertical columns extending high into the sky with lots of green and red color. "Almost as soon as it was dark we were seeing vertical columns of light extending high into the sky, with the ever-present green color, but also lots of red color!" Since the X1.9-flare, there have been 2 M class solar flares, also from sunspot region 1302. AR1302 is not slowing down as is being called the sunspot that just wont quite. As the week wears on it will turn to face Earth more directly. NOAA forecasters estimate a 40 percent chance of more X-flares during the next 24 hours. Any such eruptions would be Earth-directed as the sunspot crosses the center of the solar disk. NASA says a heavy blow could potentially blow the ...

The black and white images show the magnetic field - the field is pointing toward us where it is white. The leading spots all have an intense negative polarity and the following spots are mostly positive. The two polarities are pretty well separated and fairly stable, which is why this region hasn't produced even more dramatic activity. The biggest explosions happen when complex magnetic regions annihilate each other. The glittering moving features around the spots follow the crests of magnetic waves. Not much new flux is emerging into this mature region, but there is a lot going on in the vicinity - and just about everywhere else too if you look carefully. The surrounding filamentary structures are weaker field regions that appear bright in intensity. The movie with the granular yellow background shows the Sun's surface brightness. Sunspot group 11339 is already large when it rotates around to the front side of the Sun. The umbra is the darker, cooler part where the magnetic field is very strong and vertical. The surrounding orange penumbra appears very dynamic because waves in the weaker horizontal magnetic field make it look like material is flowing out of the spot. Watch how the darkest regions develop in time. The largest spot is more than five times the size of our Earth. What you cannot tell from these pictures is which direction the magnetic field is pointing. Credit: NASA SDO

MAGNIFICENT SUNSPOT: One of the largest sunspots in years is rotating over the sun's northeastern limb. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture of AR1339 during the early hours of Nov. 3rd. Measuring some 40000 km wide and at least twice that in length, the sprawling sunspot group is an easy target for backyard solar telescopes. Two or three of the sunspot's dark cores are wider than Earth itself. Naturally, such a large sunspot has potential for strong flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 50% chance of M-class solar flares during the next 24 hours. One such eruption has already occured: An M4-flare at 2200 UT on Nov. 2nd produced a bright flash of extreme UV radiation (SDO movie) and hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. The CME is not heading our way. Future CMEs could have greater effect as AR1339 turns toward Earth in the days ahead.

I feel it coming and I've gotta get out of its way, I hear it calling and I come 'cause I can't disobey - I should not listen and I shouldn't believe but I do, yes I do. She turns me on, she makes it real. I have to apologize for the way I feel. My life, it seems has taken a turn. Why, in the name of God, would I ever want to return? Peel off our skin, we're gonna burn what we were to the ground. Fuck in the fire and we'll spread all the ashes around. I wanna kill away the rest of what's left and I do, yes I do. She turns me on, she makes it real. I have to apologize for the way I feel and nothing can stop me now - there's nothing to fear, and everything that ever was is inside a tear. Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah Inside a tear. Now, I just stare into the sun and I see everything I've done. I think I could have been someone, but I can't stop what has begun when everything is said and done, and there is no place left to run. I think I used to be someone - now, I just stare into the sun.

Late in 2009 and early 2010, two very large sunspot groups popped up on the Sun. These two animations shows those groups as seen by the SOHO spacecraft. The first is in visible light, and the second in far ultraviolet which shows magnetic activity associated with the sunspots. Watch as the Sun rotates; you get a cool 3D effect. Note that some data are missing, so the rotation isn't smooth. In the second animation a frame flashes up which says "CCD Bakeout" which is a standard cleaning process for the detector (heating it up to remove some pixel faults).
