To complete this how-to, you will need: Portable VHF radio Vehicle Maps Navigation equipment Partner Caution Camera Chasing storms is extremely dangerous -- obey all law enforcement instructions and posted signs. Step 1: Head out Between April and June, head to a location in Tornado Alley, a swath of land in the central US known for its active storm season. Step 2: Listen in Go online to find the frequency for your local transmitter of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Radio All Hazards, or NWR. Then, listen for updates about severe weather nearby. Check online for additional information on developing weather systems. Step 3: Hit the road When you hear of severe weather nearby, head toward the storm. Keep listening to NWR to stay abreast of the storm's direction and use maps and navigation equipment to approach the weather system. Rely on at least one other storm chaser to share driving and navigation duties. Step 4: Practice storm chaser safety Approach severe weather cautiously as a storm chaser: flash floods, hail, and lightning can all prove hazardous on the open road. This footage was originally submitted to & uploaded into the CBC News website, voluntarily, without compensation to the creator or anyone. CBC does not pay users who upload videos to their website. With only about 9 minutes notice, the tornado roared through the historic downtown square & several residential areas. In the late afternoon, a supercell storm formed and intensified over Lake Huron, spawning a waterspout which came ashore and passed directly through the heart of Goderich. At its widest over downtown, the tornado was estimated to be 1.5 km across, and its path was an estimated 20 km long. This is raw footage taken by a young man, who is heard yelling, "GET IN THE BASEMENT", as he jumps into his car. At the beginning you can see how extremely close he really is to the tornado bearing down. The squealing tires are heard as he takes off. Later in the video he catches up to the tornado again .. it's very close at times & you can hear the roar of the wind, the hailstones pelting his car & see the trees bent over. On 7th August 2009 typhoon Morakot slammed into the city of Hualien on the east coast of Taiwan. I traveled to Taiwan and met up with British storm chaser Dave Johnson to try an intercept the eye of Morakot. At around 2315 local time on 7th August the eye passed right over us in downtown Hualien.

TornadoVideos.net Dominator intercepts violent wedge tornado southwest of Wadena, Minnesota, measuring incredible vertical winds with the radar, and launching parachute probes into the tornado with the cannon. We deployed in the strongest eastern side of the wedge, and the 150+ mph winds ripped off the room anemometer, sand-blasted the paint, and caused us to slide across the road with the hydraulics deployed. On May 22, 2011 the unthinkable happened...an EF-5, 3/4 to 1 mile wide tornado developed in seconds and tore through the heart of Joplin, Missouri. This tornado left a path of complete and total destruction for 22.1 miles. It ranks as the deadliest and could be the costliest in in US History since 1947. Legendary Storm Chaser and Emmy Award winner Jeff Piotrowski along with Storm Chaser Kathryn Piotrowski were storm chasing on that day and captured every single heart gripping moment in HD...at times being within blocks of the deadly core...and certainly they were always in the the outer portions of the tornado from 20th and Shifferdecker on to Grand Ave. where they aborted the storm chase and went into search and rescue mode. Jeff and Kathryn were the first persons onto Iowa St., a portion of Joplin where the core of the EF-5 ripped through. Jeff began pulling persons from the rubble and Kathryn with the aid of their chase vehicle began pulling large, twisted metal debris out of the road for what she hoped would be emergency personnel to gain access to persons in need. At the end of May 21, 2011, the Titans had captured over 10 tornadoes on video from a pair of LP Cyclic Supercells. This could have easily been the best chase day of the 2011 Storm Season and few people were there to witness these supercells on a true Boom or Bust day.
