After 6 years of appeal his conviction was overturned by the Malaysian Supreme Court. He is currently facing another charge of sodomy in a trial which has attracted international attention and condemnation. He is highly respected for his principled stance against corruption and his management of the Malaysian economy during their financial crisis. He is also viewed as one of the forefathers of the Asian Renaissance and a leading proponent of greater cooperation among civilisations.

Rawls: Key Thinkers at the University of Sydney

JOHN RAWLS ON SOCIAL JUSTICE - Professor Duncan Ivison, Professor of Political Philosophy and Head of the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry (SOPHI) John Rawls (1921-2002) has been hailed as one of the most important liberal political philosophers of our times. He is best known for his hugely influential book, A Theory of Justice (1971), which defended a vision of social justice in which individual rights and social equality were seemingly reconciled ... something many consider to be impossible. For Rawls, justice was the first virtue of social and political institutions and should structure the way fundamental rights and opportunities (as well as burdens) are distributed in a society. His conception of justice as fairness attempted to reconcile the often competing ideals of liberty and equality by setting out principles of justice that individuals, conceived of as rational and free and equal, would be willing to accept. Technically innovative, often dizzyingly abstract and yet deeply informed by the history of philosophy, Rawlss work has shaped philosophical thinking about justicefor better or worseever since.

Sit down and grab a cup of cocoa because we're about to tell you... When we originally made/named the video we were in college and never expected anyone but our college buddies to be watching this junk. So "PC" was a reference to the "Positive Choice" dormitories on campus that allowed no alcohol/tobacco/etc. All our college buddies understood what it meant, but it turns out there is actually a world beyond your college campus (a common mistake). If we could go back in time and give the video a more universal title, would we do it? Probably. And if we could go back in time and play Little League with our adult bodies, would we do it? ABSOLUTELY.

Its hard to predict whether Dick Gregory will be most celebrated as a path-breaking comedian or a trailblazing civil rights activist. Its impossible to imagine the history of either movement without him—or without his unique blending of the two. In the early 1960s, he became one of the first black comedians to perform before integrated audiences. In 1967, he ran for mayor of Chicago against Richard J. Daley, and a year later for president as the Freedom and Peace Party candidate. The author of and contributor to many politically charged books, Gregory is still a staunch, wry political voice across a range of issues as varied as nutrition, social justice, and the environment. Chicago Sun-Times columnist Laura Washington interviews the provocative and always unpredictable Gregory.

Pakistan: A Personal History

Speaker(s): Imran Khan Recorded on 20 September 2011 in Old Theatre, Old Building. Born only five years after Pakistan was created in 1947, Imran Khan has lived his country's history. Pakistan now stands alone as the only Islamic country with a nuclear bomb, yet it is unable to protect its people from the carnage of regular bombings from terrorists and its own ally, America. Now, with the revelation that Pakistan has been the hiding place of Osama bin Laden for several years, that relationship can only grow more strained. How did it reach this flashpoint of instability and injustice with such potentially catastrophic results for Pakistan? In this talk he will discuss his new book Pakistan: A Personal History providing a unique insider's view of a country unfamiliar to a western audience. Imran Khan was born in 1952 and grew up playing cricket in Lahore, Pakistan. He played his first international match for his country in 1971. In 1972, he began his studies at Oxford University, where he was a contemporary of Benazir Bhutto. He went on to play cricket for Pakistan until 1992, and was captain of the team from 1982. In 1994 he established a hospital in Pakistan offering free cancer treatment to the poor and is in the process of setting up a second. He also founded Namal College (2007), the only private sector university outside the cities. In April 1996 Imran Khan established his own political party, the Tehreek-e-Insaf, which aims to bring good governance and social justice ...

Radical Love: the Haley House documentary - TRAILER

My name is Alexandra Pinschmidt, and I am the filmmaker behind "Radical Love" - a documentary about a 40-year old non-profit organization in Boston and its personal approaches to addressing societal inequality. Haley House is a "radical" organization, in that it "gets to the root of" so many overwhelming social issues. Its programs address poverty and marginalization from a number of different strategies and levels, including: a soup kitchen, a socially responsible café and bakery training program, over 100 affordable housing units, and an organic farm outside the city. This documentary film will artistically and personally delve into issues of homelessness, marginalization, and economic inequality. The documentary will also focus on productive ways of engaging these issues, through economic and social empowerment, fostering personal relationships and community, and challenging our own beliefs and oppressive structures in society. The creation of the documentary will in itself mirror the community-based ethos of Haley House; it is a participatory project that engages the entire Haley House community, from the directors and staff, to the guests in the soup kitchen. The poetry, artwork, and music is all created or performed by people associated with Haley House, and Bostonian street musicians. The documentary will also have strong artistic undercurrents of urban and natural motifs, which evoke the outdoor aspects of being homeless. Haley House's story is also important to ...

The Ripple Effect: The Heartbeat to Eternity

1 Concept Drop a pebble in a still pond and watch the ripple travel out in an ever expanding ring The Ripple Effect is rooted in the belief that all we are all connected by our shared Humanity. 2 Description of Physics Drop a pebble in a still pond and watch the ripple travel out in an ever expanding ring. Two well known Principles of Physics are Wave Theory and Entrainment. Wave Theory teaches us that a wave will continue to travel out, never changing its initial shape or frequency. It also teaches us that when two waves intersect each other, the height of the effect is the sum of the heights of the two individual waves. Entrainment is the tendency for two vibrating bodies to lock into phase so that they vibrate in harmony. For a full description of the science behind The Ripple Effect, please visit our blog at: humanity-healing.blogspot.com 3 The Goal The Goal of Humanity Healing™ is to make a lasting difference for positive change by supporting Humanitarian efforts that create sustainable solutions for the World's problems. We believe that through a multifaceted approach of organizing Good Works, Education and Promoting Spiritual growth; we can bring about mutual respect and understanding. We can each send out Ripples of Blessings, Ripples of Social Justice, Ripples of Goodness Ripples of Peace and Ripples of Loving-Kindness past all barriers and across all borders.
