Dr. Doug McAdam - Social Movements: Power from Above and Below (FSI 2010)

Using the US civil rights movement as the principal example, McAdam talks about the typical mix of top down environmental facilitation and bottom up grass roots activism that fuel successful social movements. Appropriately, FSI puts the emphasis on the latter, but a full understanding of the prospects for significant social change requires that activists understand the critical reciprocal relationship between people power and the shifting environmental circumstances they confront. ABOUT THE SPEAKER At 19, Dale Stephens leads UnCollege, the global social movement changing the notion that college is the only path to success. In May 2011, Dale was selected out of hundreds individuals around the world as a Thiel Fellow. The Thiel Fellowship recognizes the top global changemakers under the age of twenty. Social Movements and Participatory Cultural Democracy in Latin America and the US

James Counts Early, Director, Cultural Heritage Policy, Smithsonian Institution The financial crash in the United States and the economic "push and pull" factors of migration, immigration, and transnational cultural identity have sparked new conservative and radical perspectives on social movements and participatory cultural democracy. Across the ideological and political spectrum there are growing challenges to the status-quo, including the Tea Party Movement in the US and new democracy movements among Latinos. Dr. Early will examine the nexus of participatory democracy and pluralist socialist movements that have altered the state of national politics and cultural identity in Latin American and the US Sponsors: Dresher Center for the Humanities, Language, Literacy and Culture Program, and the Department of Sociology

The 99 Percent - World

Hundreds arrested as Occupy protests continue to grow To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com The Occupy movement has become the largest global social movement in recent history and shows no sign of slowing down. But do the protests really have the potential to alter the course of world politics? They call themselves the "99 percent" and whether in Frankfurt, Athens or New York, the tactics and demands are the same everywhere. Using social media to coordinate efforts around the globe, the Occupy movement has sought to follow in the footsteps of the Arab Spring, replacing the Mubaraks and the Assads with the IMF and ECB. "What has been identified in Tunisia and Egypt is that history can be made from the bottom again", says Hagen Kopp, a German demonstrator. Despite its success many remain sceptical, and criticise the methods of the movement. "The '68 generation had a clear goal. The people going into the streets should think first about what they want", says a young German investor. As the protests continues to develop and spawn further sub-movements, what's next for outraged citizens of the global economic crisis? December 2011

It is flesh from the flesh of all exploited social layers and fights for two years, vindicating the social character of public goods. Fundamental political place and axis of action of our movement constitutes freeing of charge and access to all people, in all social goods that are essential for his decent existence. We fightingly claim free of charge education, health, streets, public spaces, Means of Public Transport, Water, Electricity, all natural goods (eg beaches, forests, air), and each good of social character for each person, Greek or immigrant. The economic fortification of (global and national) financial system requires direct transport of wealth from the households to the banks. "Zeitgeist: Requiem for One" | The Zeitgeist Media Festival 2011 | Movement | Peter Joseph

*Pre-recorded A/V elements ONLY (not live) from Peter Joseph's "Zeitgeist: Requiem for One". [All music composed/editing/animation by Peter Joseph] | Premiered at the Inaugural "Zeitgeist Media Festival" Main Event In Los Angeles CA | 9/11/11. This live work opened the the 8 hour program. [zeitgeistmediafestival.org] *Note: The Full Live Performance Version will be uploaded soon. This is only the single (non-live) a/v file used for the Festival Opening. From Peter J.: "Zeitgeist: Requiem for One" [2011] is a 32 min. performance piece for Audio and Video Display accompanied by live acoustic and electronic instruments. This work actually mirrors the original intention of what became "Zeitgeist: The Movie" in 2007. The work is, in part, a medley of the Zeitgeist Film Series as it exists, coupled with the concurrent theme of sadness resulting from the gestural "loss of the One" with respect to the severe human divisions and conflicts on this planet at this time. In many ways, this work encompasses the gestural definition of what The Zeitgeist Film Series is about, along with The Social Movement that was inspired from it."

Mark Pesce and Brad McCarty - TWiSocial Media #01

0:00-1:00 On This Week in Social Media we're talking about People Power with Mark Pesce and Brad McCarty. 1:00-1:30 Mark, how are things in Sydney? 1:30-4:15 Mark, you developed a whole world of virtual reality through VRML. How do you think we've ended up since the vision you had in the 1990s? 4:15-5:15 At one point, the tweets were moving faster than the storm (Hurricane Irene) itself. 5:15-7:00 Welcome to Brad, North American editor for The Next Web. How are things in Nashville? 7:00-8:30 Brad- I was looking at a story out of Indonesia this week about a woman who ran a social media campaign for an election in Indonesia and is now getting offers as a social media coach. 8:30-11:00 This week, we're taking a look at MTV and their use of social media for the Movie Awards. Any reaction, Mark or Brad? 11:00-11:30 At that event, Beyonce broke the news of her pregnancy and generated more tweets per minute than any other world event, ever. 11:30-13:30 Even a year after the BP Deepwater Horizon incident, BP continues to lose in its social media efforts to rehabilitate the brand. 13:30-16:00 Doesn't it seem strange that a head of PR wouldn't use these tools themselves and be familiar with them? 16:00-17:00 Brad: Pitch me on Twitter. 140 characters or less is what I have time to read. 17:00-19:00 Marketers say they want to have a dialogue with their customers, but their dollars are still spent on traditional, one-sized media. 19:00-20:15 Mark: Guidelines are different than brands ...

Priest Denied Communion to Lesbian During Her Mom's Funeral

On Feb. 25, Johnson attended her mom's funeral at the St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Gaithersburg, Md., with her partner. When it came time to hand out bread and wine, Guarnizo "issued a strong admonition that only Catholics in a state of grace can receive communion," Johnson told msnbc.com. "I went up. I was standing next to my mother's casket and he covered the bowl, and said, 'I cannot give you communion because you are with a woman, and in the eyes of the church, that is a sin.' I stood there with my mouth open in a state of shock for -- I don't know how long," she said. As the final insult, Guarnizo failed to attend her mother's burial, Guarnizo said. "When the funeral home director appears, he says, 'Father Marcel has taken ill. He says he has a migraine and is unable to accompany your mother's remains to the cemetery.' This was, for me and my family, his most egregious act."

NOTE : check out our follow up film : www.youtube.com We want to share insights into the formation of a new social movement as it is still taking shape in real time. The video was shot during the 5th and 6th day of the occupation. This idea to occupy the financial district in New York City was inspired by recent uprisings in Spain, Greece, Egypt, and Tunisia which most of us were following online. Despite of the corporate media's effort to silence the protests, and Yahoo's attempt to to censor it in e-mail communication, the occupation is growing in numbers and spreading to other cities in the US and abroad.
