He founded charity water just over a year ago with a novel fundraising model: charge 20 bucks for water and use the money to bring clean water to some of the 1.1 billion people who don't have it. So far he's raised $1.5 million dollars and brought over 200 wells to some of Africa's most needy countries. In this conversation he explains how he transitioned from a high-end party promoter who was "the most selfish person I knew," to a force for change in the face of a growing global crisis. How bad is it? Harrison explains the problems contaminated water cause and offers his perspective on the potential for mismanagement by aid organizations. Plus he shares video from his September birthday, which he celebrated in Kenya by digging a well at the Mogotio Clinic.

Right now 1.1 billion people on the planet don't have access to safe, clean drinking water. That's one in six of us. Many communities in developing nations often have a plentiful supply of clean drinking water just below the ground, but no way to get to it. This is where charity: water and their partner organizations come in. Drilling a well can cost from $4000 - $12000 USD and many living on less than $1 a day cannot afford one in their community, even if the money is combined. On 12 February 2009, 100+ international cities will be hosting a Twestival to bring Twitter communities together in an effort to raise money for charity: water. Twestival is organized 100% by international volunteers around the world and 100% of the money raised from these events will go directly to support charity: water projects. By rallying together globally, under short timescales, for a single aim on the same day, the Twestival hopes to bring awareness to this global crisis. In the fall of 2004, disgusted with the selfish and indulgent life he led, he returned to his childhood Christian faith and left nightlife to volunteer with a team of humanitarian doctors and surgeons onboard a hospital ship in Liberia, Africa. Armed with a pair of Nikons, Harrison spent eight months as the ship's volunteer photojournalist, documenting the incredible need he saw there.
