After an hour along some of the most scenic parts of the drive on Route 66. Where the road and the vistas are hard to beat we stumbled into Oatman, Arizona -- an old gold mining town that was a favorite get-away for Clark Gable. In fact, it's said he spent his honeymoon with Carole Lombard here. Tourism has replaced gold as its number one resource. Its impossible not to be sucked into this four block long old West curio shop.

Nelson honed his craft in the latter days of the big band era and then was hired by Capitol Records to do some arranging for some of their artists. One of his first assignments was to assist Les Baxter on a record date with Nat King Cole. The result of that session was Nat's "Mona Lisa", and from that point forward, Nelson became one of the leading staff arrangers and orchestra conductors in the US. On occasion Nelson would record on his own, and he even had a #1 hit with "Lisbon Antigua" in December of 1955. Nelson Riddle has arranged music and conducted the orchestra on some of the most famous popular recordings in music history for the likes not only of Nat King Cole, but Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald and many others. In 1960 he composed the theme music for a new television series starring Martin Milner and George Maharis called "Route 66". This theme became very popular over time and even reached the Top 40 pop charts peaking at #30 in August of 1962.

Stereo: www.youtube.com Buck Norris sings Route 66 by Bobby Troup. "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66", often rendered simply as "Route 66", is a popular song and rhythm and blues standard, composed in 1946 by American songwriter Bobby Troup. It was first recorded in the same year by Nat King Cole, and was subsequently covered by many artists including Chuck Berry in 1961 and The Rolling Stones in 1964. The song's lyrics follow the path of the US Route 66 highway, which used to run a large distance across the US, going from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California. The title was suggested to Troup by his first wife, Cynthia. Troup conceived the idea for the song while driving west from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles, California, and the lyrics — which include references to the US highway of the title and many of the cities it passes through — celebrate the romance and freedom of automobile travel. In an interview he once said the tune for the song, as well as the lyric "Get your kicks on Route 66" came to him easily, but the remainder of the lyrics eluded him. More in frustration than anything else he simply filled up the song with the names of towns and cities on the highway. The lyrics read as a mini-travelogue about the major stops along the route, listing several cities and towns that Route 66 passes through. Specifically mentioned, in order, are St. Louis, Missouri; Joplin, Missouri; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Amarillo, Texas; Gallup, New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona; Winona ...

The Nat King Cole Trio was the first to record this Bobby Troup tune on March 15, 1946, and almost fifteen years to the day and what must have seemed a world later, Nat re-recorded "Route 66" for the benefit of stereophonic sound in 1961. "Route 66" was a hit in '46 and will always be associated with the voice and piano of Nat King Cole.
