Printmaking Processes: Screenprinting

Screenprinting: The artist creates a stencil and applies it to a piece of fabric (the screen) stretched over a wooden frame. Ink is pulled across the screen with a squeegee and forced through the openings in the stencil onto a sheet of paper below.

Printmaking Processes: Lithography

Lithography works on the principle that grease and water repel each other. There is no carving involved. The artist draws on a stone with a greasy crayon and then covers the stone with a thin film of water. the oily ink will stick to the greasy image but not to the water-covered areas.

Printmaking Processes: Intaglio

Intaglio: The lines of the image are incised, or cut, into a metal plate. This can be done with sharp tools, as in engraving, or with acid, as in etching and aquatint. Ink is applied and forced into the incised areas. Ink remaining on the surface is removed, and the plate is ready for printing.

Printmaking Processes: Relief

The artist carves the image on a block of wood or linoleum, cutting away some areas and leaving others raised (in relief). Ink is applied with a roller, which contacts only the raised areas, leaving the cutaway parts uninked. The block can be printed by hand or on a printing press.

Ukiyo-e woodblock printmaking with Keizaburo Matsuzaki

Master printer Keizaburo Matsuzaki visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales in March 2010 in conjunction with the exhibition Hymn to beauty: the art of Utamaro. He brought the woodblocks to create a print of Takashima Ohisa, the teahouse waitress, designed by Kitagawa Utamaro (1754-1806) in the 1790s. Gallery visitors were amazed to witness Matsuzaki's deft touch as he applied seventeen colours with perfect alignment. Each colour was rubbed with the printers most precious tool, the baren. The final touch was a dusting of mica. Matsuzaki hails from Arakawa-ku in Tokyo and has been a printer since he was fifteen years old.

In Plain View - Allan Geske

Allan Geske has been making prints for about thirty years. His studio is located in the Artspace Building in the Exchange District. His prints are represented in collections throughout the USA, Japan, Korea, Britain & the Netherlands. Allan is best known for his copperplate engravings...intricate, complex & provocative images that at times evoke the landscape, but also stand as breathtaking abstractions. His etched work often incorporates prairie images paired with replications of charts, maps and iconic symbols. Allan Geske has been a printmaker since the mid-1970s and he employs various techniques in his art such as etching, engraving, relief and mixed media. His images often include the prairie landscape: maps, charts and blueprints that locate our place in the world and language that integrates the letters, words, symbols and markings of the draughtsman, poet and educator. Geske has traveled extensively and his prints are metaphors that create disparate associations relating to his sense of home and place of origin. From the catalogue of a recent show at the University of Winnipeg: "Master printmaker Allan Geske uses techniques such as etching and engraving to call up the sepia-toned maps and charts of 19th century travel and exploration. These rational ways of representing the world -- carefully laid-out and geometric -- combined with poetic approaches, to unexpected effect. Works such as Atlas Vignette and Prairie Orbs seem to picture a world both familiar and far <b>...</b>

Quilting Arts Workshop - Surface Design: Printmaking with Everyday Objects - Leslie Tucker Jenison

Quilting Arts Workshop - Surface Design: Printmaking with Everyday Objects - Leslie Tucker Jenison. Nothing fancy required! On this DVD, textile artist Leslie Tucker Jenison demonstrates how to create unique patterns and marks on cloth and paper using a variety of post-consumer objects. Demonstrations include the preparation of thickened dyes, screen printing (using everyday items to create resists); batching; and the lamination of paper to cloth (as a method for image transfer). And there's much more! Leslie also shows how to use three unique surface design techniques—soy wax printing, gelatin monoprinting, and stamping—to make marks on fabric. To clearly illustrate the variety of results one can achieve, Leslie demonstrates each technique using the same group of household objects throughout. For an in-depth lesson on surface-design techniques for fabric and paper, check out this jam-packed DVD!

EN PAPEL, Contemporary Latino Printmakers in US

EN PAPEL showcases the breadth and scope of recently-produced imagery emerging from Latino printmaking studios throughout the US. The exhibit traces provocative delineations of the Latino body politic as expressed through the artists' reflections of the world(s) they inhabit. Consejo Grafico is an independent network of print studios that was formed to advance the legacy and viability of printmaking in the United States. The Consejo promotes collaboration as a condition to further the preservation and continuity of the critical/activist orientation that spearheaded Latino printmaking. This network spans the nation and includes works from Texas, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and more. Co-Curated by Juan Fuentes · Maurizzio Hector Pineda Video produced by The MCCLA Multimedia Dot, with music by The Genie.

Artizan Editions: Original Printmaking

Artizan Editions is one of only a few screenprint workshops working in direct collaboration with artists. This partnership effects a powerful merging of concept and creativity with technical knowledge and skill. The limited edition prints published by Artizan Editions are Original Prints, as opposed to being a signed reproduction. These images are created by the artist, exclusively in the screenprint medium. Throughout the process the artist is free to focus on form, image and the creation of the matrix, alongside the printer providing technical advice and guidance regarding colour, application and the construct of the desired image. www.artizaneditions.co.uk http
