Pig cull: no cure for swine flu

After the first case of swine flu was recorded in Egypt, the government ordered the immediate cull of all pigs in the country. However, it has since been revealed that the disease spreads through humans, not animals.

Korean Culling 2011 - Healthy Pigs

On January 13, 2011, as part of a massive country-wide culling operation, the Korean government ordered the culling of all pigs on an organic pig farm. What is also saddening about this case is that a country-wide vaccination of animals for foot-and-mouth was due to begin in the less than two days. All they had to do was wait. All of these pigs were perfectly healthy. In fact, the workers in this video discuss how healthy, tough and strong the pigs are. One is particularly big and strong and they decide to inject it with a paralyzing drug. This in inhumane and cruel because they are using succinyl choline, which produces death by paralysis in a completely conscious being. The animal feels loss of muscle control and then it slowly suffocates due to paralysis of the breathing muscles, as it chokes, all the while unable to move and giving no indication of the distress and suffering it feels. This is the drug the Korean government was using during the mass cull of December 2010 - January 2011. Most animals killed in the cull, however, were buried alive. These barbaric measures reflect the incompetence and stupidity of the Korean government and its agriculture department.

Quarantined farm culls 500 pigs

EDMONTON — Officials in Alberta culled 500 hogs on the pig farm where the new swine flu virus was detected, but it was not because the animals were sick, the provinces chief veterinarian said Saturday. The farm, owned by Arnold Van Ginkel, is located at Beaver Flats in Clearwater County, along Township Road 40-1, just up from Range Road 5-5. The decision to cull the animals was to ease overcrowding on the central Alberta farm, Dr. Gerald Hauer said. For full story see: www.albertalocalnews.com

Dani Pig Feast NOT FOR CHILDREN

My wife and I were the highlands of New Guinea in the Spring of 2010. We treated a small Dani village to a traditional roast pig and yam feast. This video shows the slaughter of the piglet that we cooked and ate. This is a very disturbing video. The Dani attitude towards animals is very different from that in the West. PETA, Greenpeace, and Sea Shepherd will act brave when pigs fly

It is widely accepted the white seal of Canada are very cute. The reason why organizations like PETA, Greenpeace, and Sea Shepherd protest when the seals are clubbed to death. It is also accepted that whales are majestic and intelligent. Which these organization use as a reason to protest if not interfere with whale hunting by Iceland, Norway, Faroe Islands, and Japan. There is another animal which is both cute and intelligent, the pigs swine. Yet where are these organizations to protect the pigs? In the nation of Egypt due to fears of Swine Flu H1N1, they are culling, slaughtering the close to 300000 pigs in that nation. Egypt is a predominate Muslim nation, and Muslims do not eat pork (pig). The pigs are owned by the minority Christian population. The pigs are slaughtered with knives and sliced, much like the whales. They are also clubbed (like the seals) with crowbars. The pigs are then thrown into trucks, driven into the desert and buried. It has been reported many of those pigs buried are buried alive because they are reported to be still alive. See link below: www.google.com Where are PETA, Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd to protect these cute and intelligent animals, many of which are being buried alive? These organizations are nowhere to be seen in Egypt protesting basically because they are cowards. They know they would not be treated kindly if they try the same tactics they employ in Canada and against the Japanese whalers. Also they are basically anti-capitalist ...

Memorial Held for Culled Livestock in South Korea's Foot-and-Mouth Outbreak

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com or Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Buddhist monks in Seoul held a memorial service for livestock culled due to a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the country. Activists protested that most of the animals had been buried alive. On Wednesday, Buddhist monks in Seoul, South Korea held a memorial service for the culling of livestock. The culling is an effort by the South Korean government to contain outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease. One Buddhist said she was shaken by the treatment of the animals. [Lee Kyong-ja, Buddhist]: "I was shuddering when I saw animals culled and wondered why my country should suffer from the disease. So I prayed to Buddha there would be no more outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease." In a shopping area in Seoul, about a dozen animal activists staged a protest rally against the culling. [Jeon Kyong-ock, Animal Activist]: "We noticed that more than 90 percent of animals had been buried alive. So we are here to ask the government to cull the animals from a humanitarian standpoint." The South Korean government said on Tuesday that it had culled about 15 percent of its combined pig and cattle population. According to the agriculture ministry, 2.1 million animals and 3.6 million poultry had been killed. The nationwide outbreaks of foot-and-mouth originated in pigs in the city of Andong on November 28.

Transport of Pigs in Canada

Because Canadian humane transport laws are vague and rarely enforced, many trailers are overloaded so the hauler can maximize profit. Overcrowding is directly linked with a higher rate of falling and suffocation. This is because animals have a higher centre of gravity and must have all 4 feet on the ground to be able to remain standing. During winter, overcrowded animals are forced to have their bodies pressed up against the metal sides of the trailers where they sustain frostbite to flesh exposed through the port holes. Still-lactating sows may even freeze to the sides of trailers when overloaded and unable to escape the sides. During summer, overloading causes heat stroke as temperatures quickly reach 40C to 50C, particularly when the trailer is standing still (as frequently happens at border crossings). This, combined with the high ammonia levels, can cause death by suffocation. In Europe, real space requirements exist and are enforced with dissuasive, proportionate sanctions. Don't Canadian pigs deserve equal consideration?

Korean Culling 2007 - Chickens Buried

The practice in Korea when avian flu strikes is to bury everything alive. A large pit is dug right near the factory farm or battery hen shed. The birds are then stuffed into bags and the bags are thrown into the pit. Sometimes birds escape, as in the case of chickens here. In that case, they are chased back into the pit and will eventually be buried alive with the rest.

South Korea Buries One Million Pigs Alive

South Korea has been heavily criticised for burying up to one million pigs alive as it grapples with a foot and mouth disease outbreak. Since the first case of the disease was confirmed in November the country has embarked on a mass cull. Foot and mouth disease affects all cloven hoofed animals such as pigs, cattle and goats, and any country that has cases of it is unable to export the animals' meat. The South Korean government has so far refused to vaccinate pigs against the disease and is now slaughtering them in record numbers despite appeals to stop. On January 4 in one area of Gangwon-Do, 33900 pigs alone were destroyed, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) told Sky News Online that South Korea's actions contravene international guidelines. Michele Danan from the organisation said: "Live vaccinations are the best route but if they do have to kill them we would prefer that they were at least slaughtered humanely." The estimated cost of the cull so far is believed to have reached around £230m when a mass vaccination programme would have cost an estimated £63m. Some animal rights campaigners have criticised the government for putting economic considerations ahead of animal welfare. The Republic has begun inoculating cattle in some areas and the OIE reported on Thursday that sows and boars are starting to be vaccinated but only in a few locations. It is believed the live burial of pigs began at Christmas and the ...

SWINE FLU ALERT

SWINE FLU ALERT RAISED TO LEVEL 5 OUT OF 6 FOR A PANDEMIC 27 USA CONFIRMED CASES 5/02/09 The World Health Organization raised its pandemic alert for swine flu to the second highest level Wednesday, meaning that it believes a global outbreak of the disease is imminent. WHO Director General Margaret Chan declared the phase 5 alert after consulting with flu experts from around the world. The decision could lead the global body to recommend additional measures to combat the outbreak, including for vaccine manufacturers to switch production from seasonal flu vaccines to a pandemic vaccine. "All countries should immediately now activate their pandemic preparedness plans," Chan told reporters in Geneva. "It really is all of humanity that is under threat in a pandemic." A phase 5 alert means there is sustained transmission among people in at least two countries. Once the virus shows effective transmission in two different regions of the world, a full pandemic outbreak — level 6 — would be declared, meaning a global epidemic of a new and deadly disease. "It is important to take this very seriously," Chan told a news conference watched around the globe on Wednesday. But for the average person, the term "pandemic" doesn't mean they're suddenly at greater risk. Nearly a week after the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, was first identified in California and Texas, about 100 cases have now been confirmed in the US across 11 states, and health officials reported Wednesday that a 23-month-old ...

South Korea Battles Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com or Follow us on Twitter ☛ http South Korea's President is promising to curb the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in his country. Authorities have so far destroyed around 130 thousand cattle and about 2 million pigs to contain the outbreak. South Korean President Lee Myung-bak pledged Monday to cope with the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in South Korea. So far more than 2.5 million pigs and cattle have been culled to contain the outbreak. The agriculture ministry of Asia's fourth biggest economy says the infected animals would be buried. [Lee Myung-Bak, South Korean President]: "This is the first time our country had to cull more than 130000 cattle and 2 million pigs." The South Korean government is also using vaccines brought from two companies in England and Holland. [Lee Myung-Bak, South Korean President]: "Currently, England and Holland are producing internationally-certified vaccines, but I will seriously consider producing vaccines ourselves." President Lee says the country might face large-scale damage from the disease. The outbreak is expected to subside before the Lunar New Year holiday at the beginning of February, as most animals would have received their vaccinations by then. Major livestock markets across South Korea have been closed now for more than a month.
