The rare size and beauty of the last full moon of winter 2011 was admired by hikers following Petra after a Volunteer Appreciation Event held on site March 19, 2011. The Super Moon/Perigee Moon appeared 14% wider and 30% brighter than the average full moon. The last time a Full Moon at Perigee was observed was March 1993.The moon's orbit around earth is elliptical, not round. The moon was only 221565 miles from earth as opposed to its usual 237700 miles.

(Proxigean Spring Tide) So, what is a SuperMoon, anyway, and what causes it? SuperMoons are caused by the shape of the Moon's orbit, which is not a perfect circle, but an ellipse, or oval, shape. The Moon orbits the Earth once each month, and each month reaches a point furthest from the Earth, called apogee, and closest to the Earth, called perigee. A SuperMoon occurs when the Moon is at least 90% of the way to its perigee position at the same time it is full or new. An extreme SuperMoon is when a full or new Moon happens at the same time the Moon is close to 100% average perigee. The reason these two Moon phases are singled out is because each of them means that the Sun, Earth, and Moon are in alignment. When the Moon is full, it sits exactly on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. When the Moon is new, it sits between the Earth and the Sun. In both cases, the gravitational pull from these two bodies -- the Moon and the Sun -- combine to create larger than normal tides, called "spring tides," on Earth. When the Moon is also at perigee at this time, the effect is magnified into what is called a "proxigean spring tide." Of course, a new Moon at perigee isn't very exciting to look at -- because the new Moon does not reflect the Sun's light, it is invisible -- so full SuperMoons get much more attention <b>...</b>

I saw how cool the view of the Super Moon was from our new place in Toronto, so I dug out my camera, set it up on a dresser and a pair of binders in my living room (I couldn't find my tripod) and opened up the stopwatch app in my iPhone. 2 hours of pressing the button every 30 seconds is what you see in this video. Perigee 'Supermoon' over Windsor 19th March 2011 on Panasonic SDR-S50
This is a perigee moon over Windsor, referred to as a 'supermoon' due to its potential visual size and closeness. Astronomers said that the March 19th 2011 perigee moon is closest the moon has been to earth in 20yrs. I have attempted a few times to capture it around the few days, but due to the moon rising 1hr + later each day or night and cloud obstruction or failing batteries, I did not catch it in the conditions I was seeking. These are my first few videos with the Panasonic SDR S50, don't blame the camera for poor images, I haven't even read the manual properly yet.

I wrote this name song ten days before Halloween in 2004. In some ways, this is a sister song to Grace. This song is about a female ocean spirit named Perigee with whom the narrator is in love. She is consumed by an old loss and tied hopelessly to the moon, and her lover sees its deleterious influence upon her. This is a very rough test video for the Panasonic SDR-S50, chosen because it has 70x zoom (78x enhanced). This video is of the Perigee Moon on 19th March 2011. Astronomical organizations were reporting that it was closest to earth it has been in 20 yrs. I did not shoot early enough while moon was low on horizon. The perigee moon refers to the moon when it is closest to earth in its orbit, as opposed to apogee, the furthest distance from earth in its orbit.

Lunar Perigee 03-19-2011 The Moon comes as close as it gets!
The Earth's moon reached perigee, the closest part of the moon's elliptical orbit on 03-19-2011. This will not occur again for another 18 years. The apparent size of the moon was 14% larger during this event. The moon caused higher than normal tides and illuminated the earth at night far brighter than normal for a full moon.
