Musical artist Bobby McFerrin directs his audience in a demonstration of the power of the pentatonic scale at the event "Notes Neurons: In Search of the Common Chorus" from the 2009 World Science Festival (Goto www.lapstick.com for the ultimate travel guitar) Do people instinctively know the sound patterns of the pentatonic scale? Is there a base level of musical knowledge in all of us, just waiting to be tapped? Or is the pentatonic scale simply so common in Western music that it has become ingrained in all of our minds?

GUITAR THEORY: Superimposing Minor Pentatonic Scales

www.creativeguitarstudio.com Search Andrew Wasson.com for FREE lesson Handouts. This Video: March 29, 2011 | Search Videos by Title/Date. GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: Just finished watching your Super Chops Series and was wondering if you could do a dedicated lesson to the idea of superimposing minor pentatonic scales during improvisation. Thank you -- for these are excellent guitar lessons. - Romano, Italy A: Superimposing pentatonic scales is a very cool concept that is based upon the idea that, as I'm sure you already know inside of a major scale for instance -- there are other scales called modes. Now, when we look at the scale you mentioned in your question -- the minor pentatonic, there are 3 of them in a major scale. They can be easily found by the locations of the Mi7 chords in a scale's harmony. This is because the Minor 7th chord formula, of; R, b3, 5, b7 contains all but one note of the entire structure of the minor pentatonic scale. The complete lesson article for this video will be available on the Creative Guitar Studio website shortly. Pentatonic Improvisation - jazz piano solo

This is a companion to the Ionic in C video. I played and recorded them back to back as a single take. It is a spontaneous improvisation, with no forethought given to the structure of it. Here I try to simplify my playing to something just above minimalism. The pentatonic scale helps to do this by not allowing fully stated jazz chords. Traditional chords have to be implied in a pentatonic form. Sometimes when I am playing, I strive for complex chords and voicings. Other times I will try to take as much out as possible and see if what is left is still musical. It's a nice exercise. I use Gb pentatonic, because it shows up well on video, but it is worth doing in all keys. I hope you enjoy it. I am using the Synthogy Ivory Italian Grand patch in Logic. Digital Keyboard is by www.Midikeyz.com and is a great little program! I use a Yamaha CP300 as the keyboard controller.

Legato Patterns with Pentatonics (Guitar Lesson SC-025) How to play

In this guitar lesson I show you how to use some legato patterns to speed up your pentatonic scales and get some cool licks. I go through one pattern in detail and then just show you another 5 that you can explore for yourself. I got taught these patterns by my teacher many years ago, but a few guys have sent me links that the main pattern here is also taught by Paul Gilbert in his video called Intense Rock II. He plays it way better than me too. I'm pretty sure you can't copyright licks anyway, but I feel I should credit Paul Gilbert here because he was almost certainly the origin of these licks (via my teacher). So if you want some more even more intense licks then look up his video - it's pretty amazing. So I emailed Paul to check he wasn't going to be pissed about my use of the lick. His reply: "I haven't copyrighted any pentatonic licks, but I do own F# on the 11th fret of the G string exclusively. Rock and Roll, Paul" What a dude. So all you kids, check out the lick, but NO PLAYING F# on the 11th FRET - OK!!! Or else ;) There is TAB for the licks and the patterns on the web site - you probably wanna check that out - will make them easier to learn...Taught by Justin Sandercoe. Gary Willis style pentatonic lick - Free Bass Lesson with Scott Devine

For more free bass lessons visit - www.scottsbasslessons.com There you'll find loads of free video lessonscovering bass soloing, improvisation, walking bass, grooves etc. The legendary bass player Gary Willis is in my opinion one of the most unique bass players out there. He has his own unique approach to the bass guitar, not only in the way he plays but also his sound. He is one of the few bass players that is instantly recognizable when you hear him play. I was actually lucky enough to study with Gary Willis in Barcelona, and as you can imagine during that time I was 'Willis mad'... transcribing and absorbing everything I could get from him! Throughout all the transcribing and research I carried out, I quickly learned that Gary used the pentatonic scale extensively when soloing. In fact the pentatonic scale has a huge part to play in his instantly recognizable sound. Once I had made that discovery I spent several months weaving the pentatonic scale into my vocabulary so I would be able to access the same type of harmonic material he was using. At first I was using it on static grooves where a one chord vamp would last for an extended period of time, and then later on I was applying it to the jazz standard repertoire where I had to start dealing with multiple key centers and therefore multiple pentatonic scales throughout each piece. In this tutorial I demonstrate a great lick that is based around the pentatonic scale and is very 'Willis' when played up to speed. It's <b>...</b>

Lick of the Day - Gus G - Pentatonic-Chromatic Cascade

Check out Lick of the Day itunes.apple.com a free download for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch available at the App Store "Like" us on Facebook www.facebook.com This metal lick starts with a basic minor-pentatonic pull-off run on the high E and B strings (tuned down to D and A, respectively, since we're in standard tuning down one whole step). When I get to the third beat of bar 1, I begin a cascading chromatic descent, wherein I slide my fret-hand index finger down the B string one fret at a time, with my ring finger simply following along on the G string, two or three frets up. For maximum metal effect, I like to play the last note of the lick as a pinch harmonic (PH), to which I apply a wide finger vibrato. The tempo is 158 beats per minute, 120 for slow practice.

The Blues Scale (Minor Pentatonic) and the Major Pentatonic Scales on the Guitar

Be sure to visit www.activemelody.com to download the tablature and MP3 Jam track for this lesson for free. This lesson gives a brief overview of the major and minor pentatonic scales on the guitar, which are (in my opinion) the only 2 scales you really need to know well. You can play just about anything with these 2 scales (in fact, they're the only scales I know!). I give some examples using each scale and explain how the major pentatonic scale is the happier sounding scale, versus the minor pentatonic scale which is more sad (also referred to as the blues scale). Be sure to download the tablature and MP3 jam track for this lesson to practice these!
