NORTHERN SOUL - CHARADES - 'THE KEY TO MY HAPPINESS'
The MGM CHARADES were formed with a different line-up when the original 1950/60's Doo-wop group, who had planned a comeback, were reluctant to sign a new contract. This prompted the record label to work with a mysterious new act based in New York. However, when soul singer Dean Courtney moved from RCA records to MGM, he mentioned that John T Mac Junior had been running The Charades. The same group may be linked with the Charades that recorded 'You're With Me All The Way'/'Power Of Love' on the Mercury label in 1965 -both sides written by J. Mack. Robert Pruter's 'Chicago Soul' book, explains that only a few Chicago acts in the 60's appeared on Mercury. The producer credited on the label is Tom Wilson -best known for his work in the 1960s with Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Simon and Garfunkel and The Velvet Underground. Arranged and conducted by Horace Ott. The Charades recorded two 45's for MGM Records; 'Key To My Happiness/'Weeping Cup' (66) written by Robert Gerald Maxwell 'I Don't Want To Lose You'/'Never Set Me Free' (66) written by Maxwell flip Rhodes-Casey 'Can't Make It Without You'/'Love Of My Life' also recorded by the Charades (Okeh Records) 1964 -arranged and conducted by Horace Ott. NORTHERN SOUL - THE TEMPESTS - 'SOMEDAY'
TEMPESTS hailed from, or around, Charlotte, North Carolina. The group was first set up by two brothers Mike and Roger Bunch. In 1968, "Would You Believe!" album was released on the Smash label, a subsidiary of Mercury records. At the time of this release, the Tempests consisted of ten members. The leader singer and co-songwriter of 'Someday' was Hazel Martin Jr. (1936-2008). He had a powerful and distinctive voice, described by some with "an unforgettable, honey-soaked voice". 'Someday', and other tracks featured on the album, became highly sought after in the early 1980's on the Northern-Rare Soul scene. The track was featured regularly on DJ Guy Hennigan's top twenty at Top of the World, Stafford. Initial plays of the record in 1983 required the traditional practice of 'covering-up'. Consequently, the artist was introduced for a brief time as 'Bobby Paris!' The Tempests also figured prominently in the Carolina Beach scene.

TONY MIDDLETON has something of a cult following on the Rare/Northern Soul scene via several excellent dancers. Paris Blues was recorded for Bell (1776, Broadway, New York) subsidiary record label, Mala in 1966. This autobiographical number concerned Tony's down-and-out stay in the French capitol in the early 60's. Enormously popular in 1976, 'Paris Blues" still commands a high price today for this big city style production by Claus Ogerman, particularly on original blue issue copy. Equally popular, is the dramatic recording and pounding version of an old Nat 'King' Cole number 'To the Ends of the Earth' (US MGM and for an even rarer release, on UK Polydor records 1966). Other recordings sought after by soul collectors include; Spanish Maiden (Speed and Storm 1969) My Home Town (Alpha 1962) You Spoiled My Reputation (ABC Paramount 1965) My Little Red Book (US Kapp and UK London 1965) Middleton was born June 26, 1934. in Richmond, Virginia. In the mid-1950's, Middleton moved to New York with his mother. He surpassed others with his skills in various sports and started to box as an amateur in his late 20's. He began his singing career in the Dovers and then joined the 5 Willows in 1952, becoming their lead singer as the group changed their name to the Willows. In 1958 he went solo, however with several songs recorded on a variety of different labels, he still could not produce a hit song and decided to move to Paris in 1962. The original version of this song is quite simply the most sought-after Motown and Northern Soul record of all time.The legendary Motown producer, Frank Wilson, made this solo record for Motown which was so rare, and so in demand, that someone paid fifteen thousand English pounds for a copy. He was a big help with the Motorcity project, in 1989 and 1990, and he and his wife Bunny always stay at my house every time they're visiting London. The Motown single "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)" became so huge that everyone wanted to see Frank perform it. For years he refused, but finally he gave in and did so at Fleetwood in 2000, in front of two and a half thousand people, the one and only time he said he would ever do this. But previously to that, we had visited him at his Los Angeles home, and filmed him at the piano, so people got to see, on The Strange World Of Northern Soul DVD, this legendary song being performed for the first ever time.

FREDA PAYNE (born 1942, Detroit, Michigan) is an American singer and actress best known for her million selling, 1970 hit single, "Band of Gold". Freda Payne grew up listening to different jazz singers, such as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. As a teenager, she attended the Institute of Musical Arts; she soon began singing radio commercial jingles, and took part in (and won many of) local TV and radio talent shows. In 1963, she moved to New York and worked with many different entertainers, including Quincy Jones, Pearl Bailey, and Bill Cosby. The following year, her debut album, a jazz recording entitled After the Lights Go Down Low and Much More!!!, was released on the Impulse! label. In 1966, she released her second album "How Do You Say I Don't Love You Anymore", for MGM Records. Although it is regarded primarily as a jazz album, there are also several covers of pop songs featured, including the Beatles' hit "Yesterday," "Let It Be Me," the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," "Feeling Good," and "If You Love Me (Really Love Me)." (more) Added: June 21, 2007 Northern Soul is the term used in the UK for a type of mid-tempo and uptempo heavy-beat soul music (of mainly African American origin) that was popularized in northern England in the mid 1960s. The term also refers to the associated dance styles and fashions that emanated from the Twisted Wheel club in Manchester and spread to other dancehalls and nightclubs; such as the Golden Torch (in Stoke-upon-Trent), the Blackpool Mecca, and (in 1973) the Wigan Casino. Northern soul dancing was usually athletic, resembling the later dance styles of disco and break dancing. Featuring spins, flips, and backdrops, the northern soul dancing style was inspired by the stage performances of visiting American soul acts such as Little Anthony & The Imperials and Jackie Wilson. A large proportion of northern soul's original audience came from the mod movement. Some mods started to embrace the freakbeat and psychedelic rock of the late 1960s, but other mods - especially those in northern England - stuck to the original mod soundtrack of soul and blue beat. Some mods transformed into what would eventually be the skinheads, and others formed the basis of the northern soul scene. Ronnie McNeir is an American singer and songwriter born on December 14, 1949 in Camden, Alabama, USA and raised in Pontiac, Michigan, where he first took a keen interest in the Motown Sound..... As a child McNeir was a gifted basketball player. This interest was soon curtailed, however, following a car accident. Ronnie took up the piano, on which he was quite proficient by the age of fourteen. He won a talent contest in 1966, which led to a deal and his first 45, a tune called "Sitting In My Class." The song was later to become a huge Northern Soul hit. Ronnie conceived a personal approach to constructing his sound over the course of several albums (and one excellent EP). He relocated to Los Angeles in 1971, where he struck up a relationship with Rene Moore and joined the local choir. Here he met Kim Weston, who employed Ronnie as her musical director. It was Kim Weston who helped Ronnie land his first record deal at RCA Records. He initially released one album on RCA in 1972 entitled Ronnie McNeir, followed by an album on Prodigal in 1975, also entitled Ronnie McNeir, containing the much-sought-after "I'm Your Lover." After an initial release on Motown, there were tracks recorded for a second album for the label, but they were never released. Around this time, McNeir recorded two tracks with The Four Tops for their 1977 ABC album, The Show Must Go On. He later became The Four Tops' musical director. McNeir appears on the Tops' 1995 Motown album Christmas Here With You <b>...</b>
