The Canonical development team has released the second and final beta for Ubuntu 11.04, code named "Natty Narwhal. As previously reported, there will be no release candidate for Ubuntu 11.04. Following public discussions about any last minute reasons to pull Unity as the distribution's default desktop and use the classic GNOME desktop instead, the developers have decided to move forward with Unity, which is developed in-house by the Ubuntu developers. The ARM version of Ubuntu will ship with Canonical's new Unity 2D interface by default. The Unity Launcher, a sort of 'dock' meets taskbar and notification area, can be used to launch applications pinned to it or switch between running applications; file type aware drag-and-drop is also supported. Other new Unity Launcher features in 11.04 include full keyboard navigation support and the addition of quick-lists to the context sensitive menus. Users can search for applications and files using the implementation of Lenses. Furthermore, by pressing the Super or Windows key, users can launch the "Dash" start screen for various common tasks, including search; alternatively, clicking the Ubuntu logo in the top-left corner of the screen will also open the "Dash". Based on the 2.6.38 Linux kernel, Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 features a number of package updates over 10.10, including Firefox 4.0, version 2.0 of the Banshee media player and LibreOffice 3.3.2. There may be some discussion about Ubuntu moving to a daily download format down the road, but for now, we can report that the next version of Ubuntu, Natty Narhwal, can now be downloaded. It's an alpha version, Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 1 and the biggest change that the latest version introduces is the Unity desktop interface. Unity was only made available just a couple of days ago so the entire concept is still a work in progress and prone to bugs. For those that are not a big fan of Unity, the old, more familiar classic desktop is still an option. Unity may be slightly smoother now because it relies upon Compiz instead of Mutter which it did in UNE 10.10. With the new Alpha release, there are a couple of other changes including the availability of Firefox 4 Beta 7, an updated Linux kernel to version 2.6.1937 and the introduction of a global menu. The new release of the open source operating system is available for download here, but do remember that this is still an Alpha release meaning that it is full of bugs. It would not be prudent to upgrade your production machine with Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha.

This is just a warning to everyone, please DO NOT use COMPIZ whatsoever for Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, I demo exactly what happened when I did, UNITY and GNOME/ CLASSIC are definitely affected, ith KDE being untested by me, although I have heard stories that it doesn't work too well either! Either take my advice, or leave it, but I'm upset with the lack of Compiz support for 11.04 Natty Narwhal (LINUX UBUNTU).

I use it on my Dell Laptop 1564. It's Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit and I use the new Unity 3D interface. Very easy to use and has very nice graphics. I personalize it using the Equinox Evolutin theme and the Faenza icon pack. I love it. There are some problemes after installing it, but reading through the internet you can find fixes. I installed a lot of software, very usefull, I also installed Acrobat Reader Pro 9 and Fireworks 8 (this works) using Wine. I recomend this distro because is user-friendly! Just a quick glance at my new working environment, switching from Windows to Ubuntu and encouraging everyone to do so, since Linux is becoming more and more average-user friendly :) Basically I use my computer mostly for vectoring and drawing and combo of Ubuntu 11.04 and my MSI CX623 notebook has shown as the winning one, so I'm keeping it permanently.
