Mountaineering: Height Doesn't Matter

Cutting-edge climbers have turned away from Everest and the 8000-meter trophy peaks in search of virgin terrain. It's not the height of a peak; it's the sheer difficulty. It's jokingly referred to as "Disaster Style" — the world's best alpine climbers are figuring out how to do more with less. A lot less.

Walk on water (Liquid Mountaineering)

www.hi-tec.com Liquid Mountaineering is a new sport which is attempting to achieve what man has tried to do for centuries: walk on water. Or to be more precise: running on water. We are developing the sport from scratch. By accident we found out that with the right water repellent equipment you can run across bodies of water, just like a stone skimming the surface. Liquid mountaineering is performed by professionals under professional supervision. Accordingly I must insist that attempting to do so is dangerous. We like to thank the people at Hi-Tec for their support. www.hi-tec.com

The best mountaineer in the World

Mountaineering isnt as easy as it might look. Susanne accepted the challenge and headed for the mountains in the Dolomites, Tirol. She didnt really get that far, because you won't get far without experience. Reinold Messner knows everything about climbing as he was the first man in the world to reach the top of the Mount Everest without any extra oxygen. Nowadays, Reinold owns the Messner Mountain Museum where you can find the full history of climbing.

Cerro Torre - Mountaineering in Patagonia

Making-of the movie "Ritmo Latino" : The story of two alpinists, Bruno Sourzac and Ramiro Calvo, bewitched by the same mountain: Cerro Torre. In the heart of Patagonia, this granite monolith rejects many suitors, even the most gifted ones. Ramiro has produced a funny and touching film of the Franco-Argentinean team making the ascent. While not a tango, the music driving the climbers is a key element in the story. Ramiro talks about how and why he made the film, underlining values dear to Argentineans: friendship, laughter and passion... More infos on : www.petzl.com

FIRST ASCENT: Ed Viesturs "The Art Of Mountaineering"

From a boy who grew up on the flatlands of Illinois, Ed has established himself as America's premier high-altitude mountaineer. He's the first American and the fifth person to summit all 14 of the world's 8000-meter peaks, all without the use of supplemental oxygen. He moved to Seattle in 1977 to study at the University of Washington and then at Washington State University, where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. He began guiding on Rainier with RMI in 1982 and has participated in 30 Himalayan expeditions since 1987. Here, Ed talks about the Art Of Mountaineering and why going up is optional, but coming down is mandatory.

NOLS Alaska Mountaineering

www.nols.edu This course takes you to a place in Southcentral Alaska often referred to as "the mountain kingdom of North America," where a chain of rugged mountain ranges and spectacular glaciers converge to make a mountaineer's dreamscape. Within this region you'll explore the coastal Chugach Range, the interior Alaska Range, or the vast Wrangell-St. Elias Range. The specific route for each course is entirely season dependent, with expeditions in the early season climbing mostly above snow line to access terrain via huge snowfields, and courses operating in the later season completing technical ice routes on glacier. All routes on the course for students ages 17 and older are classically Alaskan with long approaches on large glaciers. The shorter course for students ages 23 and older flies directly onto a glacier to maximize time for technical skill development. Both courses provide an ideal training ground for learning to live and travel responsibly and efficiently in challenging mountain terrain.

The Grand Tour: A 15 Day Mountaineering Road Trip

This Video represents some of the many things I saw on my 15 day mountaineering trip. We first started with Mount Hood via the Leuthold Couloir, then Mount Whitney via the Mountaineer's Route. The video ends in Death Valley with Manly Beacon which is located in Golden Canyon. This was an incredible series of adventures which I always tell myself "I cannot Live the Adventure of a Life Time just Once!". The video was recorded between December 2 through December 11 of 2011.

Mountaineer Spectacular Climbing K2 Summit Day

K2 Success and repeats An Italian expedition finally succeeded in ascending to the summit of K2 via the Abruzzi Spur on 31 July 1954. The expedition was led by Ardito Desio, although the two climbers who actually reached the top were Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni. The team included a Pakistani member, Colonel Muhammad Ata-ullah, who had been a part of the 1953 American expedition. Also on the expedition were the famous Italian climber Walter Bonatti and Pakistani Hunza porter Mahdi, who proved vital to the expedition's success in that they carried oxygen to 8100 metres (26600 ft) for Lacedelli and Compagnoni. Their dramatic bivouac in the open at that altitude wrote another chapter in the saga of Himalayan climbing. On 9 August 1977, 23 years after the Italian expedition, Ichiro Yoshizawa led the second successful ascent to the top; with Ashraf Aman as the first native Pakistani climber. The Japanese expedition ascended through the Abruzzi Spur route traced by the Italians, and used more than 1500 porters to achieve the goal. The West Face and upper slopes of K2 The year 1978 saw the third ascent of K2, via a new route, the long, corniced Northeast Ridge. (The top of the route traversed left across the East Face to avoid a vertical headwall and joined the uppermost part of the Abruzzi route.) This ascent was made by an American team, led by noted mountaineer James Whittaker; the summit party were Louis Reichardt, Jim Wickwire, John Roskelley, and Rick Ridgeway ...

Mountaineering Deaths on K2

ANCHOR: An update on the horrific K2 hiking tragedy in Pakistan. It seems that out of 18 trekkers only two have survived. Among the dead are three Koreans, two Nepalis, two Pakistani high altitude porters, French, Serbian and Norwegian climbers and an Irishman. STORY: The unforgiving slopes of K2 is the world's second largest mountain after Everest, based in north Pakistan. It is a notoriously difficult ascent and now the mountain has claimed more lives in one devastating expedition than ever before in its history. Several teams amassed for a joint assault on the summit but eleven of their members from all over the world were to die trying. Disaster struck during the descent of a steep gully known as the Bottleneck eight thousand meters above sea level. Several died when an ice wall collapsed and tore away their safety lines. Others, stranded, died in the freezing oxygen starved air at an altitude known as the death zone. Dutch survivor Van Rooijen, seen here in a Pakistan hospital, said he screamed for people to work together but they appeared consumed with self preservation. Some tried to find their own way down on a mountain where to be lost means almost certain death. His compatriot, Las van de Gevel, was also rescued and was recuperating. One Italian spent four nights on K2 before finally managing to make it to safety despite severe frostbite. Technically more difficult to climb than Mount Everest, K2 is even harder to descend. Mountaineering veterans have questioned ...
