In 1976 Marvin Gayes marriage was about to collapse. He was also just about to be imprisoned because of non-paid child-support to his wife Anna. Reputedly Motown bailed Marvin out and he was suggested to leave US for a some time. Promoter Jeffrey Kruger arranged a European tour to start up in September 1976 and it also included a long waited visit to England for the first time in ten years. This concert in question was held in 10th October before sell-out audience in Edenhall concert hall Amsterdam. The track listing is pretty much identical compared to the Album "Marvin Gaye - Live At The London Palladium!" which was recorded on the same tour seven days earlier. Only songs missing are "Trouble Man" and "God is Love". All the other tracks are exactly (although in different order) the same as on this DVD, even including the content of medleys. These Medleys are actually one of the biggest problems in this concert. In a way the whole concert is one gigantic medley, while atleast what I was expecting, were the full versions of the songs. If compared to the performances in the "Live in Montreux" DVD this concert feels pretty boring. Marvin himself explained the reason for these medleys in Sharon Davis´ biography book like this; "I got a list of songs from my promoter. He told me all the tracks that were popular in England and I just put them into medley form for few minutes because I hadn´t done them in years. "I Want You" is Marvin Gaye's 1976 hit song released on the Tamla Motown label. The album was his first recorded studio material released in three years and marked a change in direction for Gaye, leaving his trademark Motown soul for funky, light-disco soul. Much of Gaye's music encompassed spirituality, sexuality, and vulnerability. Originally conceived by Motown songwriter Leon Ware and his songwriting partner "T-Boy" Ross, it was originally intended to be included in Ware's Musical Massage album. When Ware, who was also signed to the label as a solo artist, presented the rough draft of his album to Motown-CEO Berry Gordy, the mogul was appreciative of the songs, including a rough version of "I Want You". But after hearing it, he convinced Ware to give some of the songs to Marvin Gaye, who was coming off the release of his acclaimed 1973 record, Let's Get It On, his final duet recording with Diana Ross and a commercially successful live album and was coming off a US tour at the time. Marvin, who called himself a perfectionist, had struggled with creating a follow-up album to Let's Get It On. When Ware played Gaye the rough draft of "I Want You", Marvin, then inspired by his relationship with his nineteen-year-old girlfriend Janis Hunter, was motivated to record a convincing performance of the song, which was about a man trying to convince a wayward lover that he wanted the woman to love him as deeply as he loved her. "Save the Children" is a song written by Al Cleveland, Renaldo Benson and Marvin Gaye and issued on Marvin's 1971 album, What's Going On. While not issued as a single in the US, the song was issued as a single by the Tamla-Motown label in the UK where it peaked at #41 on the Charts in December of 1971, whereas the other major US single releases initially failed to make a dent on the other side of the Atlantic. The song was a continuation of the message "What's Going On" delivered, about love, this time, for the children. Marvin later joked on the liner notes of the album "not let (this song) influence anyone". Marvin recorded both a spoken word recitation of the song and a vocal version mixing the two vocals together featuring Marvin's soft-spoken vocals on one side and his expressive tenor on the other. The song would later be covered by Diana Ross in a medley featuring the jazz song, "Brown Baby", on her 1973 album, Touch Me in the Morning. Marvin sung this song briefly while touring Europe in 1976 including the song as part of his What's Going On medley.

"What's Happening Brother" is a song written by James Nyx, Jr. and Marvin Gaye, produced by Gaye and issued on the soul singer's acclaimed 1971 album, What's Going On. The song started off the song cycle that began with a man returning home from fighting in the Vietnam War only to discover that his world is abstractly different from what it used to be before he left for duty. In Marvin's case, the song was dedicated to his younger brother, Frankie, who was returning back from a three-year duty at Vietnam, in essence, Marvin later told interviews that Frankie's experience in Vietnam inspired him to collaborate on the songs for the What's Going On project. Throughout this song, Marvin mentions in his brother's third person about the nightclub, about whether or not his baseball team would "win the pennant" and wonders how his friend has been which brings upon the question, "what's happening brother?" Musically the song follows the same path as "What's Going On" and features The Andantes as background vocalists. This is notable because not only was it Marvin's second single ever as a solo artist, released on Motown's Tamla subsidiary in November 1961 but it was also the first song Marvin sung while Berry Gordy first heard him at Motown's Christmas party in 1960. Hearing Marvin sing the song convinced Berry to sign the young talent (21) to Motown. Marvin brings a doo-wop production to the Chordettes hit. Background vocals applied by the Rayber Voices. "Right On" is a 1971 song written by Earl DeRouen and Marvin Gaye and produced by Marvin, who issued the song on his landmark album, What's Going On. The song, which talked about the differences between the rich and poor, good and evil and other divisions, was built in a different musical texture than previous singles bringing in a Latin soul percussive style including maracas and a flute and fluent jazz-styled piano playing from Gaye. The song changed into abstract melodies and harmonies from Marvin with the first half in a settled mood, the second half a little more hasty as Marvin's lyrical content went from social to political and the third which was a more modest close in which Marvin preached how "love can conquer hate anytime" and telling someone close to him to come "to live where love is King" before ending in the song's first half musical production. The song then climaxes with Marvin segueing into "Wholy Holy". The title was also referenced in "What's Going On" so prominently and was so heralded that Marvin formed a production company titled Right On Productions soon afterwards.

This is a video I made using the classic Marvin Gaye song, "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)". At the beginning of the video, I wanted to throw the viewer right into the time frame of the video flashing the notable leaders who were assassinated during the 1960s such as MLK, Malcolm X, JFK and Robert Kennedy. The rest of the video was used to try and enhance Marvin's lyrics of poverty, racial tension, the Vietnam War and other issues of that specific time. Its ironic how some of these same issues still exist today only through different titles of propaganda. I hope you enjoy and take care.

Marvin, the manically depressed robot from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy TV series (were *you* old enough to stay up and watch it?) makes a special "personal appearance" on the BBC's flagship Kids' TV show to "perform" his first vinyl single release. (Don't know what you think, but I reckon he's miming!) As ever, Stephen Moore provided the voice, with a special recording for the part where Marvin speaks to the BP presenters. Inside the costume on this occasion was BBC Vis FX Assistant Stuart Murdoch, not David Learner (who played Marvin in the TV series). Watch for Renny (Dennis Potter's latter day director) Rye's credit and the bit where the dog is chewing on the tortoise near the end...!

Marvin P. Bush, the president's younger brother, was a principal in a company called Securacom that provided security for the World Trade Center, United Airlines, and Dulles International Airport. The company was backed by KuwAm, a Kuwaiti-American investment firm on whose board Marvin Bush also served. According to its present CEO, Barry McDaniel, the company had an ongoing contract to handle security at the World Trade Center "up to the day the buildings fell down." The World Trade Center was destroyed just days after a heightened security alert was lifted at the landmark 110-story towers, security personnel said yesterday [September 11]. Daria Coard, 37, a guard at Tower One, said the security detail had been working 12-hour shifts for the past two weeks because of numerous phone threats. But on Thursday [September 6], bomb-sniffing dogs were abruptly removed. On the weekend of 9/8, 9/9 there was a 'power down' condition in WTC tower 2, the south tower. This power down condition meant there was no electrical supply for approx 36 hrs from floor 50 up...
