"Bo Mambo" has appeared in a commercial for Kahlua liquor, and was sampled for the song "Hands Up" by the Black Eyed Peas. Known for her astonishing 4 1/2 octave vocal range, Yma Sumac (AKA Ima or Imma Sumack) is from Ichocán, Peru, a town high in the Andes. From an early age she performed in radio and movies and made recordings throughout South America. She came to the United States in the 1940s and performed with a small group of musicians and dancers. When she signed with Capitol Records in 1950 her stage name's spelling was changed to the more exotic "Yma Sumac." An urban legend that she is really "Amy Camus," a nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn, originated in 1951 with a joke among musicians repeated in one of Walter Winchell's gossip columns. She has acted in several films and stage shows, and continued to perform into the 1990s. She lives in Los Angeles and has been contemplating new releases of recordings of her most recent concerts.

I found a link for this video and I thought it should be shared because their's is a very moving story. You can see the BBC story here: news.bbc.co.uk This performance of Bernstein's Mambo is the best and most awesome I've ever seen. All musicians should play with this gusto no matter what their age and income. Most of these players are from the poorest parts of Venezuela. Truly Amazing!!!

www.blacktree.tv Sound Check Pharrell Williams Having a Bad, Bad Day: Music of Despicable Me In the past several years, Grammy Award-winning artist Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes and NERD has written and produced for such block- buster global musicians as Gwen Stefani, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Madonna, Kanye West and Shakira. In 2009, Billboard magazine named The Neptunes producers of the decade, and Williams and his collaborators have played an enormous role in shaping the culture of the music landscape. Naturally, the next step for the artist was to explore the interplay between music and movies. Williams has been interested in scoring music for feature films for some time, and he became more eager to work in this realm after observing Jack Johnson's musical involvement in creating the best- selling soundtrack to Universal's animated Curious George. Williams expressed his interest to friend and music supervisor KATHY NELSON. He remembers: "I told Kathy that the very next time something comes your way, you call me and let me know what it is. She said, 'Pharrell, I really like you, but I'm not going to just give you anything. I'm going call you when it's the right thing.' And I got the call for Despicable Me." A longtime anima- tion fan, Williams was eager to take on the challenge of crafting original songs and themes for his f irst film. "What I like about the philosophy on the filmmakers don't make children's films. They make films for humans that use some of the ...

Fall in love with Sophia - de-la.com Sophia came from her native Italy to America and became one of the world's greatest sex symbols. With exotic curves that made Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield look shapeless( joke), Loren relit the Italian passion that Rudolph Valentino made famous back in the 1920's. After starring in many hit films, Loren struck Oscar gold for her role in the Italian film 'Two Women'. Directed by Carlo Ponti, whom she married after many relationships with other cinema greats Cary Grant and Gregory Peck. Even today, Loren looks stunning and is still named in 'the most beautiful women in the world' lists. Everybody fell in love with Loren's European sex appeal and warmth that she so wonderfully oozed onscreen. A screen legend, Sophia Loren will forever be remembered for her fantastic performances, striking beauty and curves. All of which, was natural. The song is 'Mambo Italiano' by Rosemary Clooney. High Definition dance footage from the BBC. Mambo is a Cuban dance in a Latin American style. Mambo music was invented in 1930s Havana by Cachao and his contemporaries. It was made popular around the world by Perez Prado. Mambo music developed from danzón and was heavily influenced by the Jazz musicians that the Italian-American gangsters, who controlled Havana's casinos, brought to entertain their American customers.

For more videos and Salsa news: www.ScarletMambo.com Salsa History -Palladium Era-Golden Age of Dance PART1 This episode is a 27 minute documentary showing Mambo dancing in New York City at the Palladium in the 1950s. Back then the night began with a free mambo lesson On 2 (hey, just like they do today at some places !) and continued until 4AM. Old footage was displayed of the famous dancers of that era. Their dance style was not quite as precise and polished as today's dancers but it was fun to watch everyone doing their thing on the dance floor. Currently, the Ballet Hispanico dance company is performing at the Joyce Theater in New York reliving the days at the Palladium. Each dancer was selected to play a certain "character" from the 1950s palladium days: the socialite, the married couple dance instructors, the underage girl, the hot Casanova, plus the neighborhood people and weekly regulars. And "playing the role of the big band at the Palladium is Ray Rodriguez and orchestra Swing Sabroso !" It was great ! Dancing to "Baila con Swing Sabroso", side by side footage was shown on the screen of the black and white 1950s Palladium dance floor mixed in with the current Crystals dance floor showing identical dance moves and dress. Footage of the band at Crystals was mixed in with their music video.
