In this tutorial we show you how to lace the drive side spokes of a rear bicycle wheel. It's important to remember that on the rear wheel the drive side spokes are slightly shorter than the non-drive side, due to the dish of the wheel. You should also prep your spokes with linseed oil or spoke prep before lacing. When lacing the drive side spokes start at the spoke hole next to the valve stem hole. Make sure it is a hole that is drilled towards the drive side of the hub. Most rims have slightly offset drilling, so the spoke holes will angle slightly toward one side of the rim or the other. When lacing, each set of spokes will be placed every fourth hole. So when lacing the outy drive side, you place a spoke every fourth hole on the rim, with three holes in between.

This video demonstrates how to "true" a bicycle wheel using simple wooden tools that I made in my workshop. The tools are based on plans found in Chapter 3 of an ebook entitled "Professional Guide to Wheel Building, 5th Edition", by Roger Musson. This book is available for download by online purchase at www.wheelpro.co.uk I found the book to be very informative and simple to understand. After reading this book, I concluded that anybody with reasonable mechanical aptitude should be able to true and even build their own bicycle wheels. I built the truing stand, radial gauge, lateral gauge, and dishing gauge in one weekend, using scraps pieces of Baltic birch plywood, pine, hard maple, maple plywood, UHMW plastic and 1/4" cold rolled steel flat bar. All of the wooden parts have three coats of oil based urethane for added protection. The nipple driver was made by grinding the tip of an inexpensive slot screw driver, using the dimensions found in Roger's book. The Red Spokey Pro spoke wrench was purchased on line from SJS Cycles in the UK. This video is not intended to be a comprehensive video on bicycle wheel truing. It only gives a quick overview of the truing process. To really understand the topic in more depth, I would highly recommend that you download Roger's ebook and read it for yourself. San Francisco-based artist Eric Staller built a bike for 8 as an art piece. As part of his Urban UFO series, he wanted to take his art out of the gallery and into the streets. It got so much attention he decided to commercialize it as a bike for 7. Staller named it a conference bike because it's where "the boardroom meets the gym". It's not a tandem, but instead all seven passengers sit in a circle. It steers like a car with Volkswagen steering. So that even those who are cycling backward, or sideways, can contribute equally to the forward motion, everyone has pedals which are connected to a circular shaft (a universal joint) with a chain that goes to the rear wheels. They're not cheap- about $13000 each-, but Staller believes every village could have one. Some towns are using them as part of car-free city programs. In Germany, they're being used as a human-powered schoolbus. Let's face it, we've all seen amusing pet videos online and after a while they all start to look the same. Not this time. Meet Norman, a two-and-a-half year old Briard dog that has learned how to ride a bike. You know how some kids are slow to master the art of two wheels? The Daily Mail reports it took the pooch just 10 weeks to master the art of riding his personalized bicycle. I'm not kidding. Man's best friend can now ride a special designed bike around his South Carolina neighborhood. This curious canine has taken a very strong liking to his new form of transportation. "Right now he totally loves his bike because it is a totally new concept for him," his owner Karen told the Daily Mail. "The most difficult part of training him to do this was building up the muscles in his back legs. ... It was the 'hump' or the rotation over the pedals that was causing him to tire out quickly and now he knows to build the momentum because otherwise if the pedals are straight it can be too hard for him to turn them over," she said.
