1971: Apollo 14 (NASA)
Apollo 14 was the eighth manned mission in the Apollo programme and the third mission to land on the Moon, touching down on 5 February 1971. The crew were Commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr, Stuart A. Roosa (Command Module Pilot) and Edgar D. Mitchell (Lunar Module Pilot). After landing at the destination for Apollo 13 - Shepard and Mitchell took two moon walks, adding new seismic studies to the by now familiar Apollo experiment package, and using a "lunar rickshaw" pull cart to carry their equipment. Roosa, meanwhile, took pictures from on board command module Kitty Hawk in lunar orbit. Shepard and Mitchell collected almost 45 kg of lunar samples for return to Earth. The Apollo 14 astronauts were the last lunar explorers to be quarantined on their return from the Moon. Shepard and Mitchell named their landing site Fra Mauro Base, and this designation is recognized by the International Astronomical Union.

Lunar lift-off film for Apollo 17. The television camera was mounted on the rover which Gene parked about 145 meters east of (behind) the lunar module. The ascent stage ignites and climbs, spacecraft foil and dust flying in all directions. Ed Fendell in Houston anticipates exactly the timing of ignition, lift-off, and the rate of climb, and the camera tilts to follows the ascent. At pitchover, the throat of the ascent engine points down at the camera and its combustion is visible as a small bright light. The clip ends as Challenger reaches an altitude of 1500 feet. October 15, 2009 - Baikonur Cosmodrome. A new Progress cargo resupply vehicle launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to the International Space Station at 9:14 pm EDT Wednesday, Oct. 14. Less than nine minutes later, the ISS Progress 35 reached its preliminary orbit and deployed its solar arrays and navigational antennas. It replaces the trash-filled Progress 34 which undocked on Sept. 21 and was destroyed on re-entry into Earths atmosphere over the Pacific on Sept. 27. Progress 35 is set to dock to the station on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 9:41 pm with more than two tons of oxygen, air, propellant and other supplies and equipment aboard. The station's 35th Progress unpiloted spacecraft brings to the orbiting laboratory 1918 pounds of propellant, 110 pounds of oxygen and air, 926 pounds of water and 1750 pounds of spare parts and supplies for the Expedition 21 crew. Once the Expedition 21 crew members have unloaded the cargo, Progress 35 will be filled with trash and station discards. It will be undocked from the station and like its predecessors deorbited to burn in the Earth's atmosphere. The Progress is similar in appearance and some design elements to the Soyuz spacecraft, which brings crew members to the station, serves as a lifeboat while they are there and returns them to Earth. Apollo 17 Liftoff from Taurus Littrow - Perspective-corrected for proper "horizon up" viewing
This brief presentation shows the 16mm Data Acquisition Camera (DAC) footage that was shot during the Apollo 17 ascent from the valley at Taurus Littrow. In this ascent footage, the DAC motion picture camera was mounted in the right side forward-facing (LMP) window of the Apollo 17 Lunar Module "Challenger", providing us a view looking down at the Moon's surface as the LM ascent stage fires and sends the spacecraft on its way back up to lunar orbit for rendezvous and docking with the CSM "America". Rather than just showing the raw footage here as it is cataloged in the NASA film archives, I instead show two examples of the same clip, presented in a side-by-side style format to allow for a direct comparison between the two versions. On the right side, you see the raw ascent footage just as it is archived by NASA, showing the full scene from the standard, unmoving camera angle. On the left, I show the same scene, however in that example, the footage has been rotation-corrected in order to always keep the scene in it's proper "horizon up" viewing orientation throughout the duration of the clip. This proper "horizon up" perspective can be established based on some simple criteria, with the goal being to ensure we are viewing the footage with the lunar surface being shown so that the Moon's horizon that is closest to the camera's current principle point always remains aligned and level towards the top of the field-of-view (even if the horizon itself is not actually visible at <b>...</b>
