Review: Large Hadron Collider

Today's topic is the Large Hadron Collider, a bold choice given that none of us know anything about particle accelerators. To those of you who do, feel free to angrily comment on any mistakes you notice. I assure you that we'll take them super seriously. I'd also like to take this opportunity to apologize in advance to Switzerland for some of the things we said.

Data Processing at the LHC

Google Tech Talk February 8, 2011 Presented by Bob Jones, CERN IT Department, IT EU Project Leader ABSTRACT CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the Universe is made of and how it works. CERN has recently completed the construction of the LHC, the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator. Thousands of scientists around the world have contributed to constructing the sophisticated LHC experiments and they are now eagerly waiting to get their hands on more data to extract the physics during the next fifteen years, the expected lifetime of the LHC. To reach this goal, tens of thousands of computers distributed worldwide are being harnessed in a distributed computing network called the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG). This supports the offline computing needs of the LHC experiments, connecting and combining the IT power of more than 150 computer centres in more than 30 countries. The rapid increase in performance of the LHC accelerator is having an impact on the computing requirements since it increases the rate, complexity and quantity of data that the LHC experiments need to store, distribute and process. The previous estimates of 15 Petabytes per year of stored data are already looking conservative and so it is necessary to plan to go well beyond this figure. This presentation will give an overview of CERN ...

Michio Kaku - If LHC can't find Higgs-Boson, or the "God Particle", ("the entire edifice of modern physics depends upon it") the Standard Model would have to be "thrown out". Junk science-peddler Michio Kaku himself admits that if Higgs-Boson pr the "God particle" is not found by the LHC, that science would be forced to "throw out" the Standard Model, String Theory, the 'Big Bang' & "the entire edifice of modern physics depends upon it"

CERN goes faster than speed of light - LHC breaks "Light Barrier" with neutrinos at CERN

CERN scientists break the speed of light Scientists at CERN in Geneva say they have discovered sub-atomic particles that move even faster than the universally accepted rate of 300000 kilometres a second. Experts say the discovery is a game-changer - and is more significant than the discovery of radioactivity. If proven, it will blow Einstein's 1905 theory of relativity - a fundamental pillar of physics - out of the water.

Large Hadron Collider - The Search For The Higgs [1 of 3]

Click Playlist: www.youtube.com On November, 2007 the most complex scientific instrument ever built will be switched on. The Large Hadron Collider promises to recreate the conditions in the early universe. By revisiting the beginning of time, scientists hope to unravel some of the deepest secrets of our Universe. Within these first few moments the building blocks of the Universe were formed. The search for these fundamental particles has occupied scientists for decades but there remains one particle that has stubbornly refused to appear in any experiment. The Higgs Boson is so crucial to our understanding of the Universe that it has been dubbed the God particle. It explains how fundamental particles acquire mass, or as one scientist plainly states: "It is what makes stuff stuff..."

Large Hadron Collider Particle Accelerator - VOA Story

The world's largest particle physics laboratory is under construction on the border between Switzerland and France. At the heart is the Large Hadron Collider Particle Accelerator being built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Its members hope it will reveal secrets of the universe and its formation. The goal of the project is to discover the origin of matter by replicating conditions just after "the big bang." Twenty nations and international bodies make up CERN. Last April, scientists and journalists gathered at its Swiss headquarters, as the last of 1700 huge magnets was lowered into the Large Hadron Collider or LHC. CERN Director General Robert Aymar said, "It is an enormous task, with very tricky logistics, because the tunnel is very narrow, and when we move the magnets in nobody can be in the way." The particle accelerator and collider is a 27 kilometer tunnel, about 100 meters underground. CERN spokesman James Gillies describes the accelerator. "This is a discovery machine. It's built to make discoveries and is going to tell us lots of new things about the universe." If all goes as planned, subatomic particles will be accelerated around the tunnel next year, eventually approach light speed, and smash into one another. Gillies adds, "To me the most exciting thing is that we know an awful lot about a small amount of the universe. We understand the stars, the galaxies, the stuff which makes up you and me, but we also know from cosmology that is ...

euronews science - Large Hadron Collider: A racetrack for particles

If you imagine the LHC on the border between Switzerland and France as a racetrack where particles run close to the speed of the light, then think of the magnetic field as their driver. More than 1200 so-called supermagnets weighing around 30 tonnes each are responsible for making the particles follow a curved path inside the Collider and make them meet.... www.euronews.net
