Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair

Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair repairs a patient's groin hernia. Traditionally, such a hernia was repaired with an incision above the groin. Now, with laparoscopic technology, this hernia is repaired using three small incisions - resulting in a quicker recovery, as well as a faster return to work and normal activity. This video reviews such a procedure performed by Mark Liberman, MD For more information, visit www.libermanadvancedsurgical.com.

Gallbladder Removal Surgery (Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy)

This medical animation shows laparoscopically assisted gallbladder removal surgery, or cholecystectomy. The animation begins by showing the normal anatomy of the liver and gallbladder. Over time, gallstones form within the gallbladder, blocking the cystic duct, and causing the gallbladder to become enlarged and inflamed. The procedure, sometimes called a "lap-chole", begins with the insertion of four trocar devices, which allow the physician to see inside the abdomen without making a large incision. Air is added to the abdominal cavity to make it easier to see the gall bladder. Next, we see a view through the laparascope, showing two surgical instruments grasping the gallbladder while a third severs the cystic duct. After the gallbladder is removed, the camera pans around to show that the cystic artery and vein, have already been clipped to prevent bleeding. Item #ANIM026

SEE MORE VIDEOS: PreOp.com Patient Education http or bit.ly - Patient Education -- Before we talk about treatment, let's start with a discussion about the human body and about your medical condition. Your doctor has told you that you have a hernia. But what does that actually mean? Patient Education In general terms, we can say that a hernia occurs when the layers that make up the abdominal wall weaken. In other words, the fabric of muscle and other tissues which protect the gut, develops a defect, or weakness. Through that defect the peritoneum (PER-IT-TA-NEE-UM) - and perhaps other organs - push their way outward, forming a lump which can be felt - and sometimes seen - protruding from the abdomen. During normal childhood development, boy's testes slowly descend from the interior of the abdomen, down into the scrotum. They pass through the abdominal wall by way of a natural passageway called the inguinal canal. In men, the inguinal canal contains blood vessels that supply the testes, as well as the vessel that carries sperm to the penis. Hernias that occur due to a weakness in the abdominal wall at the inguinal canal, are called inguinal hernias. And not surprisingly, men are 25 times more likely than women to experience a hernia in this area. Some inguinal hernias press directly through the floor of the inguinal canal. Others follow the route taken by the blood vessels that supply the testes. This kind of hernia - called an indirect hernia - can even push all the way ...

SeriousGames@Google: Playing Surgery - A Laparoscopy Game for Surgeons on the Nintendo Wii

Google Tech Talk March 9, 2012 Presented by Henk ten Cate Hoedemaker, Tim Laning, and Jetse Goris. ABSTRACT Laparascopic (or keyhole) surgery is challenging for surgeons and can be dangerous for patients. The surgeons who perform these procedures need ongoing training and hands on practice. The University Medical Centers of Groningen and Leeuwarden in the Netherlands have teamed up with game developer Grendel Games (www.surgical-games.com to produce a unique solution. Instead of using expensive, traditional simulators to teach their doctors the motor skills needed for laparoscopic surgery, they have developed a full Nintendo Wii game with customized controls that imitate a surgeon's instruments... but in a non-medical context. What makes this game unique is the choice to make a virtual game world that offers an immersive storyline, exciting puzzles and pleasing visuals, around the control scheme and motor skills of laparoscopic surgery. This deliberate change of context is unique for a medical serious game. At the 2010 Game Developers Conference (GDC), the first prototype of this game was presented. Forbes crowned it "one of the ten games that can change the world." The 2010 presentation is one of the most viewed serious games videos in the GDC vault. Project team members Henk ten Cate Hoedemaker, Tim Laning and Jetse Goris will describe their development process and demo the new version of the game and Wii controllers. Hernia Hiatal Laparoscopic PreOp® Patient Education Feature

www.PreOp.com -or- http -or- bit.ly -Patient Education - Patient Education Company Your doctor has recommended that you undergo surgery to repair a hiatal hernia. But what does that actually mean? Your diaphragm is a muscle that separates your chest from you abdomen and helps you to breathe. Normally, the diaphragm has an opening for the esophagus to pass through where it connects with the stomach. A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach pushes upward through this small opening. Patient Education Company Your hiatal hernia may be causing considerable discomfort, with symptoms like heartburn, difficulty swallowing, chest pain and belching. The reasons why hiatal hernias form are not known, but they are quite common. A Hernia is dangerous only if it becomes strangulated. That means that the portion of the stomach that has pushed up into the chest may become pinched - preventing blood from reaching it. If this happens, you may require emergency surgery to restore blood flow and to repair hernia. n the case of a hiatal hernia, there are no real alternatives to surgery. Hernia's often remain stable and symptoms may be sometimes managed with medication and other therapies, but they never cure themselves. And putting off surgery increases the risk of developing a strangulated hernia and even breathing problems. Because of these risks, it's rare these days for a physician to recommend any treatment other than the surgical repair of a hiatal hernia. Surgical procedures ...

Laparoscopic Appendectomy (Laparoskopik Apendektomi)

Appendicitis is one of those fascinating abdominal conditions that have a variety of presentations and also there are other conditions that mimic appendicitis. Appendicitis is the most common intra-abdominal surgical emergency with a lifetime risk of 8.6% for males and 6.7% for females, but the risk of appendectomy is 12% for males and 23.1% for females due to the higher rate of negative or incidental appendectomy in females. Difficulties in diagnosis are likely to be encountered, especially in atypical presentations. These can lead to either an inappropriate delay in surgical treatment or an unnecessary exploratory laparotomy. 15-30% of the removed appendices do not have histological signs of inflammation. Several diagnostic modalities, such as ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT) and diagnostic laparoscopy (DL) have been introduced. These tools have several limitations, risks and costs. US is an observer dependent test with low sensitivity rates, whereas CT is less observer dependent but relatively expensive and exposes the patient to a relatively high radiation dose. Radiological evaluation helps the surgeon with the diagnosis and differentiation in nearly 100% of cases. Laparoscopy is another reliable diagnostic tool for appendicitis with the advantage of leading to other diagnoses and the possibility of concomitant therapeutic interventions. Negative appendectomy rates are relatively low : 4-13% in a laparoscopic approach. At present, the utility of DL and ...
