Labuan Island, Malaysia is a free trade zone which means alcohol, chocolate etc are all extremely cheap. When one travels they have many opportunities to drink and I feel I've reached the stage where I'm now bored with 'hitting the juice'. To quote my favourite comedian, Billy Connolly, "if you are still seeking that buzz from too much booze once your over 40, it's a little bit pathetic" FCP X Orange and Teal Filter

I speak with Peter Searle from www.ectrustco.com about why Labuan Island, Malaysia is one of the best places in the world to set up an international company. Labuan Island is an International Business and Financial Centre. It has numerous double tax agreements with countries such as Australia and provides benefits to international business including '3% tax on net audited results or a flat rate of Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) 20000 to trading companies; low operational costs; liberal exchange controls; and a host of other advantages including readily available, experienced and professional service providers.' Other than the standard affairs of local food at the Labuan weekend market, there is also the Labuan farmers market to check out. As the stretch of the former dwindles off at the end, so begins the latter sheltered under extended blue-coloured tents. Instantly, you would be hit by the smell of salted fish gathered in molehills and other dried condiments neatly stacked atop one another in vacuum-sealed packets. Compared to the rowdy weekend market, this part of the town is much quieter and sleepy. Underneath the fanned ceilings, farmers and their wives perk up from their daydreams whenever customers approach their stalls to check on the fresh vegetables and fruits, before resting their face on their knuckles again as the customers moved on to the next stall selling exactly the same things, arranged in almost the exact same order as the stall next door. (Well, at least you know the market will not run out of what you want to buy!) Here you can find rare items like the authentic sambal sticks/slabs, made in Labuan and those shipped in from Sabah. They are made in the most organic way possible; no preservatives or added flavours just a lot of smashing in the sambal pounder. One way to differentiate such sambals from the ones you buy at the supermarket, is that these sambals you could still see the teeny eyes of the dried shrimps in the sticks and slabs. You can also find more sago slabs, the main ingredient for the Brunei-Malay food Ambuyat sold here, as well as ragi balls ...

On the westernmost tip of the Island of Flores, the town of Labuan Bajo, or also spelled Labuhan Bajo sits peacefully: a small fishing site with surprisingly comprehensive tourist facilities. The central logic for its wide range of amenities is the extraordinary interest of travelers to the existence of the Komodo dragon, locally called ora, if not for its superb national park that encompasses some 80 islands. Facing two important islands -- Rinca and Komodo -- the only habitat in the world for the mythical and endangered species, the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), the town of Labuan Bajo acts as a transit port and a destination to Flores's newly discovered interior. The town at the most western end of Flores provides a place to stock up on groceries and other necessities for those traveling on liveaboards to the islands or further east.

An artefact from Labuan's coal mining era (1847-1912). During that period, Labuan was used as a coaling station for ships sailing in the Far East area. Coal was transported by single rail track to Victoria Port. Situated on a rise at Tanjung Kubong, this 106 feet high red brick stack, known to locals as The Chimney, is an artefact from Labuan's coal mining era (1847-1912). It is believed to have been built during the time when Labuan was used as a coaling station for ships sailing in the Far East area, and the mined coal was transported by single rail track to Victoria Port. The Chimney was made from more than 23000 pieces of red bricks that was imported all the way from England. The bricks layering and works are typical of British style. For a long time, the Chimney was thought to be nothing more than the ventilation shaft typical of a chimney structure. However, recent findings revealed that there were no traces of smokes or burning on the inside of the structure which might suggest its use as a chimney. Careful excavation has revealed at least 12 layers of bricks beneath the surface. The structure sits firmly on a large tract of limestone rock containing rich kaolin or porcelain clay, which provided the strong foundation. The function of the Chimney remains very much a mystery today. Many have put forward theories with regards to its purpose. Some say it was part of an unfinished mansion, while others say it was a light house beaconing passing ships. In its heyday, a ...
