Fredrik - Chrome Cavities

First official video from Fredrik's third album Flora. Inspired by early motion picture magicians like Stan Brakhage, Harry Smith, Isidore Isou and Viking Eggeling, it features an abstract take on Palm Shadowplay using "a vintage British overhead projector, an off-white canvas, scissors, paper, 8 hands and a fishtank full of flammable liquids". The colorations are natural and come from the way the lens and materials refract light at various distances, much like a prism. The effect has been "accentuated and slightly colour-corrected to fit the overall style". Directed by: O. Lindefelt Hands: T. Eklund, F. Hultin, O. Lindefelt, A. Moberg Faces: F. Hultin, A. Kay Wang was a strong-willed grandmother who was reluctantly taken to a StoryCorps booth by her son and granddaughter. Though Kay resisted, she still had stories to tell—from disobeying her mother and rebuffing suitors while growing up in China to late-life adventures as a detective for Bloomingdale's department store. Kay passed away just weeks after that interview, and her son and granddaughter returned to StoryCorps to remember her gentler side, which she kept to herself. Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Segal - "Oscarine"

Chamber Music is a collaboration between Ballaké Sissoko, who plays the traditional kora, a lute-harp from Mali, and Vincent Ségal, the French cellist who plays for the trip-hop band Bumcello. It is also, quite simply, one of the most elegant and beautiful recordings of "world music" in recent years. At a time when cross-cultural music has tended toward highly-caffeinated electric pop and dance music, Sissoko and Ségal remind us that there is room -- and maybe even a need -- for a quieter, more refined world music. Both musicians have displayed an aptitude for defying expectations -- the list of trip-hop cellists is pretty short, after all. And Ballaké Sissoko has become a familiar name on the world music scene through his work with American blues legend Taj Mahal and Italian minimalist Ludovico Einaudi, among others. But perhaps the combination of kora and cello works so well because there are no expectations for it. The collaboration grew out of a personal friendship, and at no point was there an attempt to produce a record that would be slick and hip and commercial. Yet it has become one of Europe's most buzzed-about world music recordings in the past year. Available on Amazon: www.amazon.com Website: sixdegreesrecords.com

Mirah - Shells.

Sunday night, February 21, 2010, was breezy and cool and the threat of rain hung heavy in the air. But nothing was going to dampen my sprits that night because I was in Hollywood to catch Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn performing at the Bootleg Theater. Mirah is a 35-year-old indie singer/songwriter with ties to the bay area and Pacific Northwest...a true individual in a world of blurred individuality. Mirah possess what the Los Angeles Times recently described as a "pristine alto," and I jumped at the opportunity to see her perform live (her last LA appearance was last April at The Echo to debut her album "(a)spera"). I arrived about two hours early. I'd never been to the Silverlake district and wanted to hangout a little. I was, to say the least, taken aback by the Bootleg Theater. The Bootleg is one of dozens of little theaters that dot the ragged LA landscape. To describe it as stark is a flagrant understatement. The Bootleg Theater is nothing more than four bare walls, a floor, and a rickety little stage. In fact, due to its lack of seating, décor, and lighting, The Bootleg has all the quaint ambiance of a World War II British air raid shelter. With time on my hands and no place to sit, I decided to have a walk around the neighborhood and find a quiet bar to hibernate in. It wasnt difficult. I've forgotten the name of the little place, but after downing five or six Rusty Nails (prepared by Pablo de la Cruz, the extraordinarily generous barkeep) it was time to wander back to ...
