Kepler-16b is trending after NASA announced the discovery of the first planet with two suns. Double star systems are common in the Milky Way, but the discovery puts to rest any doubts that a circumbinary planet, or a planet that orbits two stars instead of one, can form and exist in their vicinity. Astronomers have started referring to Kepler-16b as Tatooine after the fictional planet in the Star Wars saga famous for its two suns that is home to both Luke and Anakin Skywalker. Kepler-16b is about the size of Saturn and a mere 200 light-years from Earth. It orbits the binary star system every 229 days, while the two stars themselves orbit each other once every 41 days.

NASA hosted a news briefing at 11 am PDT (2 pm EDT), Thursday, Sept. 15, to announce a new discovery by the Kepler mission. The briefing was held at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. The event was carried live on NASA Television and the agency's website at www.nasa.gov and also streamed live, with a chat available, at www.ustream.tv . A representative from Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), a division of Lucasfilm Ltd., joined a panel of scientists to discuss the discovery. A planet with two suns has been discovered by Nasa - drawing comparisons with a fictional world in Star Wars. The discovery was made through the Kepler spacecraft, an observatory that is looking for other planets orbiting other stars. The new planet - called Kepler-16b - is the most "Tatooine-like" planet yet found in our galaxy. Tatooine was the name given to Luke Skywalker's home in the Star Wars films. NEW YORK - The 1977 movie Star Wars featured a planet with two suns called Tatooine. Now scientists said they have found the first real two-sun planet 200 light years away from Earth. "After 35 years, science fiction has finally become reality," said Mr Alan Boss, a theoretical astrophysicist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington and an author of the study on the planet released on Thursday by the journal Science. The new planet, called Kepler-16b, is about the size and mass of Saturn, and moves in a circular orbit 65 million miles from its suns. But this isn't just the stuff of fiction. Now, astronomers have confirmed the first direct evidence that planets with two suns do exist. Scientists at NASA and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute [SETI] are informally calling the newly discovered world Tatooine, as homage to Skywalker's planet imagined by George Lucas. The so-called circumbinary planet has been dubbed with an official name that's much less interesting: Kepler-16b. Unlike the tagline of the Star Wars saga, Tatooine is not located in a "galaxy far, far away," it's right in our own backyard - relatively - about 200 light years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus.
