NASA's Kepler Mission Announces Latest Planetary Discovery

The Kepler mission's science team announced its latest finding at a press conference on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011. The team announced the confirmation of Kepler-22b, its first planet found in the "habitable zone," the region where liquid water could exist on a planet's surface. The planet is about 2.4 times the radius of Earth, orbits around a star similar to our sun and is located 600 light-years away. Scientists don't yet know if Kepler-22b has a predominantly rocky, gaseous or liquid composition, but its discovery is a step closer to finding Earth-like planets. The planet's host star belongs to the same class as our sun, called G-type, although it is slightly smaller and cooler. Kepler also has discovered 1094 new planet candidates, nearly doubling its previously known count. Since the last catalog was released in February, the number of planet candidates identified by Kepler has increased by 89 percent and now totals 2326. Of these, 207 are approximately Earth-size, 680 are super Earth-size, 1181 are Neptune-size, 203 are Jupiter-size and 55 are larger than Jupiter. The findings, based on observations conducted May 2009 to September 2010, show a dramatic increase in the numbers of smaller-size planet candidates. Kepler Finds Double-Sun System

NASA's Kepler space telescope has discovered its first circumbinary planet, a planet that orbits two suns. The cold, Saturn-sized planet is not in the star system's habitable zone. But, someone near the planet's surface could see double sunrises and sunsets, similar to what Luke Skywalker saw on Tatooine in the 1977 movie, "Star Wars."

The First Five Worlds of Kepler

On January 4th, 2010, the Kepler Science Team announced the first five worlds discovered by the Kepler Space Telescope. These planets are larger, Jupiter-sized ones, instead of the smaller Earth-sized planets it was designed to detect, but these discoveries pave the way by assuring that the systems all work and that the science goals will be met. This announcement was made at the Meeting of the American Astronomical Society being held this week in Washington DC. Here is a link to the press release: kepler.nasa.gov This was the fastest I've ever made a video. I was heading off to bed at about 11:30 pm, cozy in bed with my laptop when I first read the release - I was uploading this video by 3:00 am. Kepler Discovers First Earth-Sized Planets Outside Solar System

NASA's Kepler mission has discovered the first Earth-size planets orbiting a sun-like star outside our solar system. The planets, called Kepler-20e and Kepler-20f, are too close to their star to be in the so-called habitable zone where liquid water could exist on a planet's surface, but they are the smallest exoplanets ever confirmed around a star like our sun. Kepler-20e is slightly smaller than Venus, measuring 0.87 times the radius of Earth. Kepler-20f is slightly larger than Earth, measuring 1.03 times its radius. Both planets reside in a five-planet system called Kepler-20, approximately 1000 light-years away in the constellation Lyra. Kepler-20e orbits its parent star every 6.1 days and Kepler-20f every 19.6 days. These short orbital periods mean very hot, inhospitable worlds. Kepler-20f, at 800 degrees Fahrenheit, is similar to an average day on the planet Mercury. The surface temperature of Kepler-20e, at more than 1400 degrees Fahrenheit, would melt glass. New Planet Discovered by NASA; Kepler-22b Might Support Life

NASA has identified a new planet outside our solar system that might be able to support life. Kepler-22b, named after the orbiting telescope that discovered it, is about two and a half times the size of earth and is 600 light-years away, orbiting a sun-like star. The newfound planet?s average surface temperature is believed to be a comfortable 72 degrees Fahrenheit, which means it could sustain liquid water and puts it in the so-called habitable zone. NASA has been planet hunting with its Kepler space telescope since 2009 and has now identified over 2300 potential planets, about 50 of which seem to have the right conditions to support life.

Kepler, Exoplanets and SETI - Geoff Marcy (SETI Talks)

SETI Talks archive: seti.org Science fiction portrays our Milky Way Galaxy as filled with habitable planets populated by advanced civilizations engaged in interstellar trade and conflict. Back in our real universe, Earth-like planets and alien life have proved elusive. Has science fiction led us astray? NASA has launched a space-borne telescope, Kepler, dedicated to discovering the first Earth-like worlds around other stars. The first results are startling and profound. How common are worlds that are suitable for life? What properties make a planet livable? Can we estimate the occurrence of life in the universe, especially intelligent life? New telescopic and biological observations are providing the first answers to these questions. And new techniques are emerging to provide those answers.

Kepler 22b - a planet in a star's habitable zone

Astronomers announced the discovery of Kepler 22b, a planet orbiting a star not unlike our own sun at a distance where life can thrive. The discovery was announced by a team of astronomers using the Kepler Space Telescope. Launched in 2009, Kepler's sole purpose is to hunt for earth like worlds around other stars. Unlike other telescopes, Kepler stares unblinkingly at a region of the sky in the constellation of Cygnus the Swan. It's 95 megapixel camera monitors 150000 stars in its field of view. But earth-like planets are impossible to directly image using our best telescopes; they are simply lost in the glare of their parent stars. Instead, Kepler monitors the slightest of changes in brightness of the star as its planet transits in front of it during its orbit. Using this technique, Kepler has discovered 28 exoplanets, and as many as 1500 possible new worlds are awaiting confirmation. Over time, the light from Kepler 22 briefly flickered by 1/2 of 1/1000 of a percent once every 290 days. Astronomers quickly understood that this was a planet within Kepler 22's habitable zone. A habitable zone is a range of distances around a star where the temperature is neither too hot, nor too cold, to support life. A habitable zone around a hotter star would be farther out, while a habitable zone around a cooler star would be closer in. Given any star's temperature, there is an orbit where the temperature is just right for life. Kepler 22b's orbital period places the planet within ...

Planet Kepler-16b [720p]

This artist's movie illustrates Kepler-16b, the first directly detected circumbinary planet, which is a planet that orbits two stars. The movie begins by showing the gaseous surface of the rotating planet then pans out to show the stars it orbits. The two orbiting stars regularly eclipse each other, as seen from our point of view on Earth. The planet also eclipses, or transits, each star, and Kepler data from these planetary transits allowed the size, density and mass of the planet to be extremely well determined. The fact that the orbits of the stars and the planet align within a degree of each other indicate that the planet formed within the same circumbinary disk that the stars formed within, rather than being captured later by the two stars. NASA's Kepler telescope discovered the planet by observing it cross in front of, or transit, the pair of stars from our point of view on Earth. The stars can also be detected eclipsing each other. Stellar eclipses are shown here, as well as the transits of the planet across both stars. Such events allow astronomers to measure the sizes of the stars and the planet with extreme accuracy. Kepler-16b is one of the most accurately measured planets outside our solar system, with a size (radius) of 0.7538 that of Jupiter; a mass of 0.333 that of Jupiter (about the mass of Saturn), and a density of 0.964 grams per cubic centimeter. The planet is cold, lying just beyond the "habitable zone" of its star, and is made up of about half gaseous ...
