IMPROVISATION: Playing Phrases that Make Sense

www.creativeguitarstudio.com Search Andrew Wasson.com for FREE lesson Handouts. This Video: April 08, 2011 | Search Videos by Title/Date. GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I've been working with my guitar teacher on soloing. We are using simple two chord jams covering 8 beats in 4/4 time. My problem is that my lines are not really sounding very good. They don't make much sense. Everything I play just sounds like twisting strands of detached notes. My teacher hasn't been of much help, he just keeps telling me to play with more soul and feeling. This frustrates me even more, because that kind of remark comes across as a really empty comment to me. I wish I could come to Creative Guitar and study with you, but your studio is over a thousand miles away. My birthday is May 21st, and I'm getting a webcam and I will definitely be ordering a Skype lesson from you. I really hope you can read and maybe even answer my question! Thanks for all that you do on YouTube! - Ian, Hamilton, ON. Canada A: For most players - the early days of soloing and making improvised music on the guitar can feel like there's a huge lack of musical sense. Some players I've taught here in the studio use blinding speed to cover this up, but this certainly doesn't solve the problem either. I can remember many years back when I was studying with Scott Henderson at GIT, he said several times that Music is a language and the sentences of your ...

Improvising on the EM Skinner

In this video I improvise on the EM Skinner Organ at St Paul's Church in Winston-Salem, NC. In the process I try to show off many of the sounds that the organ is able to make. And of course I end with the organ at full blast. This is the instrument that I learned on as a teenager and so this was a very special recording session for me. I filmed for about two hours, so if people like this, I can certainly upload more. For the professional musicians, I'm not the best improviser in the world, so please be nice! Information on the organ can be found here: www.stpauls-ws.org

Incredible Improvisation Backing Track - Soloing Through All Minor Keys

www.GuitarLessons365.com PleaseRate, Comment, Favorite and Subscribe to help this lesson get more views. THANKS!! In this video backing track you will find a chord progression that slowly goes through all 12 minor keys. Each key lasts for about 30 seconds and then moves to the next through the Cycle of Fourths. Follow the text on the screen so you will always know what key you are in and what scales you should be using in your improvisation. This video is a great workout to develop fluency with improvising through all minor keys. The key is to watch it again and again while you improvise over it. Doing this everyday develops great fluency through the keys. This video should be good for any improviser no matter what instrument they play. Check out the main site, www.GuitarLessons365.com for many more video guitar lessons, backing tracks, PDF music downloads, forums and more. Pierre Cochereau Improvising Part 1 of 3

The late but very great, Pierre Cochereau (1924-1984) improvising at HIS instrument in Notre Dame. There is not much you can say about him that hasn't already been said. Dupré said he was the greatest improviser of the 20th century, but his work as a teacher and director of the conservatories at Le Mans, Nice and Lyon have also left a considerable legacy. This recording was transferred to CD from Disques du Solstice especially to accompany a very impressive book called 'Les orgues des Cathedrales de France' by Philippe Cicchero, and as far as I know is not commercially available elsewhere. So to many of your devoted Cochereau fans, this might be a previously unheard improv, hope you like it :-). Its in three movements, I have had to edit the single track CD into the three movements, its all unmistakable Cochereau, there never was, and never will be anyone quite like him. The slow build up in the first movement, the gentle, lilting second movement and the furious and joyous final. Another Cochereau improvisation that most of you have never heard recorded in Hungary will be coming soon!

IMPROVISATION: Relative Tonality Shifts (Major & Minor)

www.creativeguitarstudio.com Search Andrew Wasson.com for FREE lesson Handouts. This Video: February 08, 2011 | Search Videos by Title/Date. GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I'm having trouble when performing improvising over progressions that move relative major to minor, or vice versa. For example, if there was a progression that started in F major but then became D minor, I can't seem to make the shift be very dramatic, or in any way distinct. What would you suggest for improvising over relative tonality shifts? - Theodore, Greece. A: Tonality shifts can be difficult because although the progression changes, the key signature stays the same and this requires you (as an improviser) to warp your treatment of the musical context. It's a little bit like playing a solo over the same riff with an entirely different treatment of phrasing to pull out the sounds of major and minor. By using blocks of arpeggios and using the appropriate pentatonic you can pull out the color change when the tonality shifts. Amazing Grace Pipe Organ Improvisation Gerre Hancock

The master improviser, organist & choirmaster at St. Thomas for over 30 years, recorded (I think) in 1976. Dr. Hancock is now on the faculty at the University of Texas. The St. Thomas organ has evolved from a 1913 Skinner IV/77 into a IV/158. It underwent a total re-build/restoration in 1956 by Aeolian-Skinner -- the last project of G. Donald Harrison -- & has seen a couple of revisions since then.

A big thanks to the folks at Optek Music Systems for creating this special guitar. After playing the Improviser software exercises for a couple of months, I went from lame to shredder. 3 Pieces for Solo Clarinet [Virtuosity No.2], Movement I: Improviser

3 Pieces for Solo Clarinet is part of the series works for solo instruments under the name Virtuosity. These works explore the possibilities of each instrument to the fullest, often calling for extended techniques, mixing different personalities and styles. The first movement is fast 12-tone music with strong syncopations and an improvisational feel. The 2nd movement is a simple slow movement which reflects a notion that the most natural thing for the instrument is to imitate the human voice. It also reveals Chang's less-is-more Eastern philosophy. The last movement uses every kind of extended technique imaginable to produce a wide range of colors and textures. The music evokes polyphony in its architecture and impact. The great complexity and intricacy are challenging to performer, but it still remains natural to the instrument.

iPad Garageband - Guitar Jam Improvisation

ATTENTION: I want to make something clear: I DO NOT support buying the iPad or the Garageband. The truth is I don't think that the iPad is such a great device or worth the money. There are much better solutions with less money. Personally I bought and sold almost immediately (within days) more than 4 iPads before they lose value just to do garageband videos or test a new IOS. If I ever actually need to buy a tablet to keep it would definitely be an android one that cost less and do more. I felt the need to say that because I received A LOT comments about people buying iPads or Garageband application because they watch this video. I did this for fun and I am not supporting Apple or its products. This is me creating a jam track with apple's Garageband app for the ipad and then shredding a guitar solo over it! I am sorry about the bad video quality, but i could not find a way to record ipad's screen in a fast framerate. Anyway i believe you will get the idea. Hope you enjoy!
