This is normal sand coated with a hydrophobic material that repels water, so this sand will never get wet. This was originally developed to clean petroleum from sea water because the sand can mix with the oil and it sinks, instead of staying in the surface of the sea. But that sand is too expensive to produce so its used as a toy. Its used in some Artic areas too because Magic sand never frezes. This was a gift from a friend (oscar8777b in youtube). Thanks Oscar :)

A Hydrophobic coating repulses water. It is applied to a surface to stop water and other liquids from settling or soaking in. As a result it can prevent the build up of snow or ice. The term Hydrophobic comes from the greek words 'hydro' meaning water' and 'phobos' meaning fear. Since Hydrophobic coatings doesn't allow water to collect, it can help prevent corrosion or rust in metals. This video shows water 'dancing' on the surface of a satellite dish. Nokia's latest "super" hydrophobic coating doesn't take half-measures. This new technology binds a layer of nanotech magic to the surface of its devices that literally bounces liquids away. Although we've been told the nanotubes at work here are most effective with water, other liquids (and smudgy fingerprints) should also find the treated surface difficult to latch onto. Due to the thinness of this waterproofing solution, a spokesperson told us here at Nokia World that even the inner workings of a phone could be treated in the same way. No more incidents in the bathroom? Count us in. Check the video after the break for some slo-mo water slippage.

The hydrophobic effect causes hydrophobic groups in the presence of water or other polar solvents to aggregate. This effect is one of the dominant driving forces for protein folding, particularly for globular proteins.

From "Dynamics of Water Entry" by Tadd T. Truscott, Jerey M. Aristoff, & Alexandra H. Techet, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The videos illustrate the hydrodynamics associated with water-entry of spheres, which can be highly variable with respect to their material and kinematic properties. The first video, contrasts the nature of impact between a hydrophilic and hydrophobic sphere and illustrates how surface coating can affect whether or not an air cavity is formed. The second one, illustrates how spin and surface treatments can alter the splash and cavity formation following water entry. The third one compares two millimetric nylon spheres impacting at slightly different impact speeds; the faster sphere fully penetrates the free surface, forming a cavity, whereas the slower sphere does not. The fourth series shows the instability of an elongated water-entry cavity formed by a millimetric steel sphere with a hydrophobic coating impacting at 600cm/s. Finally, a millimetric steel sphere with a hydrophobic coating breaks the free surface with an impact speed of 350cm/s. More information in arxiv.org

Concrete is an unrivaled construction material that constantly evolves to meet new demands for value and sustainability. At Hycrete, we are proud to be part of this evolution. We provide concrete producers, builders, designers, and owners with modern concrete construction solutions that deliver cost savings, schedule acceleration, and sustainable construction solutions. We focus on mission-critical subgrade, grade, and super grade water and corrosion protection. Applications include deep foundation slabs and walls, podium and plaza decks, roof, parking and tunnel structures. Our technologies deliver integral waterproofing that can eliminate the need for external membranes, coatings and sheeting treatments. With our solutions, concrete is batched with Hycrete liquid admixtures to achieve hydrophobic performance (less than 1% absorption under BSI-1881 122). Hycrete Admixtures transform concrete from an open network of capillaries and cracks into an ultra-low absorptivity, waterproof, protective building material. Our Hycrete Elite Waterproofing System consists of Hycrete hydrophobic concrete delivered through local concrete suppliers, construction support, and a comprehensive performance warranty. The key feature of this construction approach is the elimination of the entire external waterproofing process. The benefits are extensive: Simplified design Reduced material demands Increased site mobility Safer conditions Project acceleration Hycrete concrete provides a high ...

Hydrophobia in a suspected Rabies patient. Hydrophobia and aerophobia are pathognomonic for rabies and occur in 50% of patients. Attempting to drink or having air blown in the face produces severe laryngeal or diaphragmatic spasms and a sensation of choking. This may be related to a violent response of the airway irritant mechanisms. Even the suggestion of drinking may induce hydrophobic spasm. Aerophobia Video at www.doctorshangout.com

HybridShieldTM hydrophobic window coatings integrate innovative, high performance technologies with practical usage, making them applicable to many types of glazing. These window coatings include anti-icing, anti-fogging, self-cleaning, and anti-glare functionalities that are all optically transparent, thereby increasing the overall functionality while preserving aesthetics and visibility. The coatings' characteristics extend to high durability and resilience, creating a scratch- and abrasion-resistant surface that is easy to apply and even reapply to an already existing material by simply spraying the coating onto the desired surface with an aerosol mister. These window coatings are developed to be compatible with virtually all glasses, metals, ceramics, and a number of plastics. For further information please contact us at www.nanosonic.com

One day while I was doing the dishes I noticed water flowing out over a bowl and dripping into a larger bowl forming spheres of water that rolled over the surface of the water. I thought that was cool, so I found out how to form the spheres intentionally and made a video. Does anyone know why this happens? I haven't seen anything about it on the internet. The sponge has a little dish soap in it, so if you try this and it doesn't work try adding a little dish soap to the sponge. No, it isn't air bubbles it is spheres of water.
