Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole

Beloved Israel "Iz" Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'Ole sings his renowned medley of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World." Israel was among the most celebrated of Hawaiian performers with a kind and gentle spirit that is evident in his touching voice. He tragically died in 1997 of an heart attack at an early age (38) and has been sorely missed by his many adoring fans. According to Wikipedia: "The Hawaii State Flag flew at half-staff on July 10, 1997, the day of Kamakawiwoʻole's funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the Capitol building in Honolulu. He was the third person in Hawaiian history to be awarded this honor, and the only one who was not a government official. Approximately ten thousand people attended the funeral." The 64 photos of Rainbows were selected from Google and Bing image searches for "rainbow" to help visualize Israel's soaring words and melodious Spirit that still touches and inspires our deep places many years after he has gone. Thank you Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole.

Over the Rainbow (Hawaiian Song), by Sandra Rayón.wmv

Over the Rainbow (Sobre el Arcoiris) Image: Sandra Rayón Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, theres a land that I heard of once in a lullaby. Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, clouds high over the rainbow, makes all your dreams come true. Some day Ill wish upon a star wake up where the clouds are far behind me. Where trouble melts like lemon drops high above the chimney tops thats where youll find me. Somewhere over the rainbow blue birds fly, birds fly over the rainbow, why, oh why, can´t I? I see trees of green and red roses too, Ill watch them bloom just for me an you. And I think to myself: oh, what a wonderful world!!! I see skies of blue and clouds of white, the brightness of day the dark say Goodnight. And I think to myself: oh, what a wonderful world!!! The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky, are also on the faces of the people passing by. I see friends shaking hands saying: how sing, how you? they really sing I Love You. And I hear babies cry and I watch them grow, theyll learn much more than well ever know And I think to myself: oh, what a Wonderful World!!! So, I think to myself: oh, what a Wonderful World!!!

Somewhere Over The Rainbow (Israel "Iz" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole version) performed by Massy

"Over the Rainbow" (sometimes known as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow") is a song with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by EY Harburg. It was written for the movie The Wizard of Oz, and it became Judy Garland's signature song. The song's plaintive melody and simple lyrics depict a pre-adolescent girl's desire to escape from the "hopeless jumble" of this world, from the sadness of raindrops to the bright new world "over the rainbow." It expresses the childlike faith that a door will magically be opened to a place where "troubles melt like lemon-drops". This cover performed by Massy is the Israel "Iz" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole (May 20, 1959 June 26, 1997) version. He was an Hawaiian musician that became famous outside Hawaii when his album Facing Future was released in 1993 with his medley of "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World", which was subsequently featured in several films, television programs, and commercials. Kamakawiwoʻole was nicknamed "The Gentle Giant" by his admirers. He was described as always cheerful and positive, and he was best known for his love of the land, people and food of Hawaiiʻi. Through his consummate ukulele playing and incorporation of other idioms (such as jazz and reggae), Iz remains one of the major influences in Hawaiian music over the last 15 years. Wiwoʻole means courage or courageous in the Hawaiʻian language. Ka maka means the eye, the center, the outlook, to see.

Hawaiian Monk Seals, mother and baby

This video puts a smile on my face every time I watch it! This happened recently while we were on vacation in Kauai... the pup seal came out of the water to nudge it's mother back into the ocean, much to the delight of the crowd watching it. I love the little girl's laughter whenever the pup sneezes... she was so cute! The song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World" is sung by the late Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.

Over the Rainbow

I originally decided to do my version of Over the Rainbow in the style of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole because of his dedication at the beginning of the version he put on his 1993 album, Facing Future. He says, "This is for Gabby". I didn't know who Gabby was at the time and I didn't know anything about his or Israel's desire to Nationalize Hawaii but the song was hauntingly beautiful and I had to know more about the person who performed and wrote it and about the person it was dedicated to. Most of you probably don't know this but there is an earlier version of this song. It was on his 1990 album, Ka'ano'i, and it does not even begin to compare to the 1993 version. I've placed a link to where you can hear a sample of it and other songs from that album at the bottom of this description. I said Israel was for the nationalization of Hawaii. There were alot of motives behind the annexation of hawaii in 1898. Not least of these were fears that France or Britain would claim her first. There were also concerns by American sugar plantation owners in Hawaii, that costly tarriffs would be imposed on them by the queen. We didn't have to annex her. It wasn't legal that we did. There were other courses we could have taken that would have protected her from other countries and allowed her to maintain her sovreignity. When Israel first performed this song, over the rainbow, he was singing about his desire to return his homeland to its own people. The people who have a legitimate right to it ...
