The 1956 Melbourne Olympics was the 1st Games to use the electric foil. Christian d'Oriola had previously dominated visually judged foil fencing but in the 1955 World Championships (the 1st time the electrical foil scoring apparatus was used at a World Championships) he came 2nd to Joseph Gyuricza (Hungary). After winning the Foil Event at this Olympics d'Oriola announced that he didn't like this new weapon and didn't like what it was doing to the sport vowing never to fence it again. A háborús nélkülözésről folytatott hétköznapi beszélgetés során ő teszi fel a kérdést a többieknek: amennyiben haláluk után újra kezdhetnék az életüket, jómódú zsarnokok vagy inkább tisztességes rabszolgák szeretnének lenni? A vitának fültanúja lesz az új vendégként betévedt rokkant honvéd, akit az asztaltársaság nézetei alaposan felzaklatnak, s miután úgy érzi, belegázoltak öntudatába, másnap feljelenti őket a nyilasoknál. Az igazi erkölcsi próbatétel itt vár hőseinkre, a kifinomult nyilas vezető ugyanis szintén morálisan próbálja megtörni őket: szabadulásuk ára egy félholtra vert kommunistának adott pofon. Az asztaltársaság tagjai közül csak a legcinikusabb órásmester hajlandó ezen a módon megmenteni az életét. Jó oka van rá: lakásán tucatnyi zsidó gyereket bújtat.
