Greek Battlefield: Video of Athens clashes with police

Greek anger over new austerity measures and layoffs erupted into violence outside parliament on Wednesday, as demonstrators hurled chunks of marble and gasoline bombs and riot police responded with tear gas and stun grenades that echoed across Athens' main square. Police said at least 14 officers were hospitalised with injuries, and at least three journalists covering the demonstrations sustained minor injuries. The violence spread across the city centre, as at least 100-thousand people marched through the Greek capital on the first day of a two-day general strike that unions described as the largest protest in years. Most of the protesters marched peacefully, but crowds outside of parliament clashed with police who tried to disperse them with repeated rounds of tear gas. Hundreds of rioting youths smashed and looted stores in central Athens on Wednesday after the mass anti-government rally against the new painful austerity measures. Police and rioters held running battles through the narrow streets of central Athens, as thick black smoke from burning rubbish and bus-stops set ablaze filled the city's skyline and obscured its ancient monuments. A gasoline bomb set fire to a presidential guard sentry post at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier outside Parliament, while running clashes broke out in several side streets near the legislature and the capital's main Syntagma Square. Nearby, groups of hooded, masked protesters tore chunks of marble off building fronts with hammers ...

'Let Eurozone collapse! Greeks, get out now!'

It's been confirmed the Greek Prime Minister's proposed referendum on the latest EU bailout will go ahead. George Papandreou's call shocked EU leaders, and sparked chaos on world markets. It even came as a shock to Greeks themselves, with pro-bailout MP's calling for his immediate resignation. The PM is now due to fly to the G20 meeting in Cannes to explain his actions to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the chief sponsors of Greece's financial life-support machine. On Balance: Cash outweighs [Greek] people?

Germany and France threatened to kick Greece out of the Eurozone and warned at this week's G20 meeting in Cannes, it won't get the next installment of rescue money. That was after the Greek Prime minister shocked European partners by calling a referendum on the EU bailout plan, a move he later dropped. RT's Anissa Naouai followed the summit. 'Greek deal no bazooka but water pistol in face of inferno'

European banks have agreed to write off 50% of the debt owed to them by Greece. It was decided during an emergency summit in Brussels, where EU leaders made, what many believe, was the final attempt to save the Eurozone. The settlement was reportedly a close-run thing, with the bank lobby holding out until German Chancellor Angela Merkel threatened letting Greece default. The EU also promises to loan Athens another 100-billion euros, while the ballooning bailout fund is in line to expand to a trillion euros. Now the task is to put it all into action. And Johan Van Overtveldt, who runs two of Belgium's leading business magazines, believes what's been achieved simply lacks any sort of punch. Mass Greek fury as EU cooks up more bad debt bailouts

As concern grows that the Eurozone is falling deeper into recession, finance chiefs are hammering out plans to safeguard the region's banks. EU Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso, said there were plans to recapitalise them. There's doubt that the next bailout installment for Greece will actually go ahead, and fallout from the country's resulting default would deal a severe blow to Europe's banking sector. In Greece itself the latest 24-hour nationwide strike turned violent, as police fired tear gas on angry crowds of anti-austerity protesters. The government is imposing more cuts on its people, trying to cap a massive debt of some 350-billion Euros. The country ground to a halt, as workers walked out in a general strke, leaving flights grounded and hospitals relying on emergency staff. No cash? We swap! Greeks' creative crisis solution

After a night of tough negotiations European leaders clinched a deal on Thursday, agreeing to have banks take bigger losses on Greece's debts. The plan includes a significant reduction of Greece's debts and a reinforcement of a bailout fund so it can serve as a 1 trillion euros ($1.39 trillion). The move is aimed to prevent larger economies like Italy and Spain from being dragged into the crisis. And whether the EU anti-crisis plan is effective or not, for the austerity-hit Greek people any help appears to be a long way off. Many are finding new ways to survive in hard times, as RT's Sara Firth reports. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

In da Crisis: Greek hip hop of sold-out generation

As talks continue to try to find a resolution to the euro zone crisis, RT has found a group of people who are cutting through the political rhetoric and telling it how it really is -- Greek hip hop artists, "Soul System." There will be no finance ministers' meeting before the leaders' summit in Brussels -- a sign that there are doubts that that EU leaders will be able to come up with a rescue package on their own. While hopes for a political way out of the crisis are fading, "Soul System" are finding inspiration elsewhere. Their political rap lyrics have been striking a chord with the Greek people. "We play at the protests and in the squares. The situation in Greece is really tough -- everything has reversed from what we used to know a few years ago.We say with our own lyrics how we perceive things that are happening in our society," says one of the musicians. Whilst performing in unison may come naturally to the group, euro zone leaders have increasingly been failing to sing from the same hymn sheet. A communications truck was set on fire in central Athens on Tuesday, and youths hurled rocks and fire bombs at riot police, as a huge demonstration against new austerity measures descended into violence. The demonstration was called by unions, alongside a general strike that has brought the country to a standstill. Firefighters arrived on the scene to extinguish the blazing truck, the second one to be set alight during Tuesday's riots. Tuesday's clashes came at the start of a two-day strike called by unions furious that the new 28 billion euro (40 billion US Dollar) austerity program will slap taxes on minimum wage earners and other struggling Greeks. .RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com
