What I originally thought was just a 2 axle International Transtar II turns out to be something that I think is pretty rare and unusual. This is a Unistar which from what I found on the internet, and there wasn't much, has a powered front axle that is engaged all the time. As I was looking this truck over, I did notice that it was called a Unistar, but not having much knowledge about trucks I just assumed that is what International called the two axle Transtar II's. These apparently had a pretty short production run from mid 1970 to sometime in '72. The standard engine for these was a Cummins NTC-300. Though it says Robinson Transport Inc. on the door, I think that may have been its former owner as it also has Utah Trucking Association on the cab too. This was shot at the Great Salt Lake Truck Show on 8-12-11.

Tools you'll need: Torque Wrench 22 mm socket 17 mm wrench Jack stand Pliers Need a Clymer manual? Check out www.clymer.com or www.youtube.com Remove the cotter pin and unscrew the axle nut with the 22 mm socket. Push the axle out while supporting the wheel. If your axle is corroded in place, get a piece of brass and a hammer. Pound on the brass, NOT ON THE THREADS! ...unless you feel like buying a new axle, then pound the hell out of the bare axle. After the axle is out, lower the wheel slightly and move it towards the rear of the bike. Remove the speedo housing from the wheel (there is a gear in there, it might fall out. Just be aware.) Roll the wheel forwards and Presto! Your front wheel is free. Now you can change the tire, put a new brake rotor on, etc. etc. Grease the speedo housing (the inside...) and put a light coat on the axle (keeps it from seizing in place.) If you put too much grease in the speedo housing (like I did), it'll ooze out from the speedo cable area. Wipe that away occasionally. Try not to let it get on the tire (that's a "while riding" concern). To put the wheel back on, roll it between the forks and guide the rotor between the pads. Lift the wheel enough the put the speedo assembly in place (make sure the prongs line up with the cut out on the hub) and move the wheel so it roughly lines up with the axle holes. Slide the axle through. Replace the washer and the nut. Tighten the axle nut to 58 ft * lbs and put a new cotter pin in place. Please rate <b>...</b>

First of all getting the nut off of the axle is usually kind of tricky but if you have a cheater pipe for your ratchet or some impacts it's not too bad. I figured out that if you break the nut loose before you take the tire off it works really good. I usually just stand on the end of my cheater pipe until it breaks loose. Then getting the tie rod end off can be tricky too. However I have a special tie rod end puller and a pickle fork that can be used to do that job. I prefer to use the puller though because the pickle fork damages the boot on the tie rod end. Both tools can be purchased at Auto Zone, O'reilly's or Advance Auto for about 15 dollars a peice. This Nissan CV axle on the passenger side is kind of different because it has what they call a carrier bearing. I guess since it's so long they had to put a bearing in the middle of it too. It's not bad though, it's only held on by 3 little bolts. Since it has the carrier bearing the CV axle doesn't snap into the transmission like most other cars. After the carrier bearing has been removed it slides in and out really easily. Sometimes when you take the CV axle out some transmission fluid spills on the floor. This was not the case today since I had the car jacked up so high. When I was done I went ahead and checked the transmission fluid anyway.
