Extremely simple DIY ebb and flow hydroponics system: part 1
Check out our auctions! myworld.ebay.com This is a work in progress and I will add follow-ups to this video as the basil plants grow larger! As winter will soon be upon us, I am experimenting with the wonderful world of hydroponics so I can have some fresh veggies during the off season, ON THE CHEAP! Hydroponics is a lot simpler than it first seems. Liquid nutrients deliver regular and consistent food to the plants on a timed schedule and therefore producing an ideal growing situation for bigger and faster fruit production than soil! Also because there is no soil, the system runs cleaner and much smaller pots can be used as we are only need to accommodate space for the roots and some media (rock wool and hydro pellets) for support. All that is needed is: -Hydroponic cup -A rock wool plug -Clay pellets for added substrate -Aquarium air pump -Air tubing -Air tubing relief valve -Inverted water bottle, with bottom cut off, sized for the Hydro pot -Plastic cup to hold water bottle -Power drill to drill holes in the bottle caps During winter, this set up will need an artificial light source, but this was a trial filmed in July 2009, so there is sufficient sun intensity and duration in the window sill for now! Co2 is optional, but highly recommended. The Co2 system feeds Co2 directly to your plants (Co2 is a major plant food source), thereby increasing production by 30%-50%. City Farming Is Not an Oxymoron
Meet Jules, Justin, Anais and Jordanne Dervaes, Pasadena residents who turned their modest home into a farm that produces more than 4000 pounds of fruits, vegetables, herbs, eggs and more annually. They were kind enough to invite me and my little camera in to document a little slice of their rural lives in the city. This 3-minute story only scratches the surface of the plethora of skills and talents this family puts to work. Justin makes biodiesel from used restaurant kitchen grease; Anais cooks up all sorts of food-based products like soap; Jordanne is developing a special line of poultry feed to prevent common diseases; and Jules, well, he founded the Urban Homesteading Movement right in his backyard. On top of it all, the family has an eye for high-quality photography, an ear for sharp writing on their blog, and their Web design and coding skills reach much further than most bloggers or even Web masters. This experiment is done to test exposure of water to sunlight and balance of nutrients, pH, temperature for the purpose of raising fish food and ultimately people food. To properly raise spirulina and process for human consumption several steps must be taken; the pH must be high enough that it kills other toxic forms of algae, the algae is filtered from the water, then UV heated and dried. Spirulina is a superfood and it's protein / amino acid profile surpasses eggs, it has zero cholesteral and an excellent mix of fatty acids. Spirulina has 10x more carotene than carrots and is used in developing countries to reverse malnourishment and save lives.
