Tribute to the Space Shuttle from the European astronauts
Space Shuttle is perhaps the most complex technological system ever built. In 30 years, it has flown 135 times and helped humankind to dispatch and partially even return many satellites and deep-space probes, to build the International Space Station and to conduct out-of-this-world science. The Shuttle has transported also 24 European astronauts to Earth orbit on 25 missions. This video highlights these flights with European flavour - from STS-9 in 1983 to STS-134 in last May.

Visit the ISS in 3D with Paolo Nespoli
Paolo Nespoli spent 6 months on-board the International Space Station from Dec 2010 through to May 2011. In this video he shot using ESA's Erasmus Recording Binocular (ERB-2) stereoscopic camera during various phases of his MagISStra mission, he caught some moments that depict the work astronauts carry out on the ISS: from educational activities, to scientific experiments and physical training, also demonstrating the way astronauts move in weightlessness through the various modules. ERB-2 is the first camera to transmit 3D images live from space. ESA would like to thank all the astronauts featured in the film: NASA astronauts Catherine (Cady) Coleman, Ron Garan, Scott Kelly and the united ISS Expedition 26-27 and STS-134 crew including ESA astronaut R. Vittori.

Space debris -- man-made threat in space exploration 2005-10-14 23:42:46 Xinhua English BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Human activities are not only leaving wastes on the Earth, but also polluting space. Space debris has posed a great concern in the countries which pursue space exploration. However, Chinese experts say the operating Shenzhou-6, the nation's second manned spacecraft, is unlikely hit by space debris as scientists are capable of monitoring space debris. SPACE NO MORE A CLEAN PLACE Since the former Soviet Union sent the first satellite into space in 1957, human exploration of space has left numerous debris,or rubbish, in the vast space. Space debris refers to artificial objects or fragments cast off in space, whether on purpose or not. A total of 29000 larger pieces of space debris have been tracked in the past 48 years of space activities. About 20000 of them have fallen to the Earth. Currently, 9600 pieces of space debris which are larger than 10 cm are monitored. Only the United States and Russia conduct monitoring all such debris, said Gong Jiancun, a research fellow with the space technology and application center under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The pieces bigger than one mm but smaller than 10 cm cannot be monitored, Gong said, and those smaller than one mm pose no disastrous threat to space vehicles. There are some 500 pieces of space debris passing through the orbit of Shenzhou-6 spacecraft, which is flying in a circular orbit 343 km above the <b>...</b>

Ariane was developed for satellite transport. By the end of 1999 the five different versions of the launch vehicle had carried over 70 satellites for research and communication into space. Ariane-5 was developed during the 1990's and will gradually take over as the workhorse launch vehicle.

ATV - Key asset for ESA's Human Spaceflight Programme
Johannes Kepler is the first production unit of the ATV, automated transport vehicles, following on from the highly successful first flight model Jules Verne in 2008. After the retirement of the US Space Shuttle, it will become the largest vehicle supplying the ISS. With ATV Europe operates a key pillar in the ISS logistics and shows its expertise among the international partnership of the ISS. This story recalls the role of ATV for the ISS in the perspective of the ESA Human Spaceflight programme.

ESA IXV - Reentry for the Future
Le Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle (IXV), anciennement dénommé Pre-X, est un projet de véhicule spatial initialement développé par le Centre national d'études spatiales (CNES). Le projet est désormais rattaché au Future Launcher Preparatory Program (FLPP) de l'Agence spatiale européenne (ESA), destiné à préparer les nouvelles générations de lanceurs et de véhicules européens prévus à l'horizon 2015-2020. Le IXV doit être lancé depuis Kourou par une fusée Vega entre 2010 et 2012.
