Let's Play Space Engine - A Downright Gorgeous Space Simulator
Windows users can get Space Engine 0.9.4 at spaceengine.org Here is a little video on my first impressions of a new space simulator called Space Engine! It is a lot like Celestia, however vastly improves on the visual quality of the textures and effects with jaw-dropping results. All the lens flares and motion blurs make me feel like I'm in a Michael Bay movie! First, we start off at the Earth and Moon to take a look at the detailed planetary textures. Then, we swing by the sun, and on to Saturn and Jupiter to take advantage of some gorgeous lighting effects on the ringed planets. After hopping about a few moons and out to Sedna in the outer solar-system, we leave the galaxy to take a look at M101. This, the Pinwheel Galaxy, is where the nearest and youngest supernova called SN 2011fe was recently found. Before I know it, what was suppose to be a short introductory video has turned into an 18-minute tour of the universe in this fantastic new software that I'm very excited about! In the video I reference a famous image of Saturn and its rings, lit up by the eclipsed Sun. You can view that image here saturn.jpl.nasa.gov I'm finding it hard to find information on who is developing Space Engine, but the website belongs to a Vladimir Romanuk, so he gets the credit for now.
