New Sony Crystal LED Display Technology FIRST HANDS ON

To learn more: www.sony.com Check out Sony's "Crystal LED Display," shown on a Full HD, 55-inch prototype model at CES. It is the industry's first 55-inch Full HD self-emitting display using LEDs as the light source. It showcases using unique methods to mount ultrafine LEDs in each of the Red-Green-Blue (RGB) colors, equivalent to the number of pixels (approximately six-million LEDs for Full HD). The RGB LED light source is mounted directly on the front of the display, dramatically improving the light use efficiency. This results in images with strikingly higher contrast (in both light and dark environments), wider color gamut, superb video image response time, and wider viewing angles when compared to existing LCD and plasma displays, with low power consumption. Furthermore, due to the display's structure, the "Crystal LED Display" is also ideal for large screens. Parallel to its continued development and commercialization of organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays, Sony will work conscientiously to bring the "Crystal LED Display" to market. 3M Touch Systems [46-inch][CES 2012][HD]

Heard of Microsoft Surface? Sure you have. It's the tech that takes capacitive touch and smears it across a table-like design. While those devices, manufactured by the likes of Samsung, have begun their slow creep into the market, rival companies are hard at work on their own multi-user, widescreen touch solutions. Which is precisely what 3M Touch Systems is showing off today at CES Unveiled. At 46-inches, its prototype Projected Capacitive Technology ups the ante on user input, allowing a theoretical maximum of 60 touch points and up to four split screens. We had a chance to take the table for a test run, so click on past the break to see how it fared. 3M Touch Systems has a host of other, smaller-sized models in its touch arsenal, but the 1080p resolution on its 46-inch prototype is indeed the most impressive. Initially split up into four distinct screens, a toggle allows users to swap between dual-screen mode for convenient multi-tasking and a single screen for uninterrupted viewing of applications and content. There's also the ability to press an onscreen button and rotate an isolated screen. To give us a sense of its usefulness, the company pre-loaded the table with a few demos, taking us through a Twitter feed, Food and Drink ordering menu and browser, amongst others. It's worth repeating that this is only a prototype, so the minor bit of lag we experienced when navigating the display should be eradicated by the time it makes its commercial launch in Q3 2012. Best of Display Taiwan 2010: Innovative Technology & Futuristic Screens

www.netbooknews.com play Taiwan brings together the most innovative display technology from the worlds leading hardware producers. This compilation includes a mobile LED light bulb which has a battery and is activated through touch. This is a prototype device and we hope to see a final product in 2011, they tell us they are still working on how the light bulb will know how to turn on when there is a power outage and not just when you turn off the light. We also have some ground breaking solar technology that looks like a window but is actually a solar panel, we haven't seen anything like this, it really looks like we could integrate this into our homes. The more opaque window will product 6 watts and the more transparent only produces 2. If you leave your home for 8 hours on the more opaque will produce enough energy to run your netbook for 3 hours. Also at display Taiwan we uncovered some displays! The two most interesting screens were the CPT screen that looks a lot like the Pixel Qi Screen, the screen uses 2.5 watts and with out the backlight it goes down to 1 watt. check it out, for out door display technology we hope that it comes to market. AUO also has a great display its transparent for functionality of the touch screen when looking at the pictures is up and down but in the drawing application anything goes. This 2.4 inch display is a prototype as they are also working on 4" and 7" displays. Putting something like this into your windshield interesting but the ...

CPT SunLight Viewable Low Power Screen Technology

www.netbooknews.com CPT is a display manufacturer here in Taiwan, they've got a transreflective display that looks identical to Pixel Qi and supposedly has the same .5 power consumption. Now they have produced another screen technology that is so new that all they haven't even named it, they just call it SunLight Viewable Low Power Screen Technology. I've actually been holding of on this story of about two weeks trying to get more information on it, like how much power it actually consumes. They claim that its less then 1/2 the amount as a normal screen but by looking at there is no way you'd think this is possible. I'm holding reservation until they get back to me with some facts or will commit to arrangements to have me come down to their factory/offices out by the airport here in Taipei. Digitimes recently reported that they've reported a profit loss last quarter, my hope is that this will make them more hungry and possibly get back to me (yes I'm complaining about Taiwanese PR with foreign media!) This technology could potentially be very exciting for mobile computers as the colour saturation is richer then anything we've seen in the transreflective category. I do show you the transreflective display similar to Pixel Qi in the video so you can see the difference for your self!

Nanosys

One of the many fronts on which device manufacturers battle one another is screen resolution—each gadget maker vying to have the highest quality image display among its competitors. Typically an increase in image quality corresponds to an increase in pixel count. Nanosys, however, has developed a technology that utilizes a completely different method for improving the quality of displays. "With LCDs, which is a very common display technology today, you have a backlight behind a panel," explains Jason Hartlove, President and CEO of Nanosys. "That backlight produces a white light, and that white light comes through the panel where the pixels are located, and those pixels flicker on and off to let the light come through. At each location there's a little filter, and that pixel is either a red-filtered or a green-filtered or a blue-filtered pixel. So you either get a red, green or blue color at each pixel location. Now the quality of the red, green or blue that you get depends directly on the quality of that white light you have in the back. If you lit up that display with a yellow light, and then you turned those pixels on and off, you wouldn't get very good color. If you, on the other hand, put something in the backlight that looked like daylight, you'd get very good color. And so the challenge is how do you make a good white light in the backlight for LCD displays, and that's really what we do." The existing LED technology that produces the backlight has steadily improved ...

euronews hi-tech - Transparent driving

www.euronews.com Driving a car safely means doing more than keeping an eye on the road. The driver also has to keep an eye on the dashboard. But looking away from the road takes time; and can be fatal in dangerous situations. Now, 'chip' LED lights powered up with transparent wires could change the way drivers get information about their cars. At the Fiat Research Institute in Turin, Italy, researchers are working on new transparent screens. Vito Lambertini, a researcher on the project, said: "A display which is directly in front of a driver allows them to get information without distracting from their driving and their view of the road. It means they can get important information in real time." Scientists at the European Research Project Multiflexioxides have developed a display unit which works without backlighting. It is much thinner and lighter than traditional displays. Scientists developed these transparent displays using small glass pads with a transparent substrata of nano-sized oxides. To enhance the materials' conductivity they add a thin gold film. Using a method called microlithography the gold molecules settle on the treated area of the glass pad. A stencil with a pattern of very thin lines is laid over the prepared pad. Ultraviolet light destroys the gold layer and only the nearly invisible lines covered by the pattern remain on the glass. Chip LEDs are placed at the end of the gold lines. They are powered via the ultra-thin gold wires. Scientists in Italy ...
