Anyone serious about acoustic guitar lessons should take a look at the Travis style of picking and incorporate it into their playing, even if they want to play the blues in a different style. Here, we take a look at those 'fiddly bits' that appear in Doc's rendition of Deep River. These are the little things that suddenly appear and blow us away with their magic, such as double thumb beats and added syncopation with thumb combination strokes. It's even more interesting when you consider that Doc (like other great masters such as Gary Davis, Broonzy,Hopkins) used just one finger on his picking hand to achieve these results. I hope you enjoy it - come back again! The full range of acoustic guitar lessons available show how to play blues guitar in various styles, such as delta blues (Robert Johnson), Texas blues (Lightnin' Hopkins), Chicago ...

"Deep River Blues" performed by Doc and Richard Watson, with Charles Welch. July 11, 2009 at the MusicFest in Sugar Grove, North Carolina. Great story told by Doc, about his history with this old Delmore Brothers tune and how he began playing it back in the thirties......really cool stuff for Doc Watson fans!! Oh yeah....Doc is 86 years old at the time of this performance. Thanks to all the folks that make this event happen.

This is the Delmore Brothers/ Doc Watson tune "Deep River Blues." The guitar is a 2007 National Estralita that I just bought, and this is the first recording I've done with it. It's an amazing instrument. The bass, treble and midrange are perfectly balanced. It's loud as hell. It's convincing at country, old time jazz, and acoustic blues. The sound is pretty and warm but can also bite if you dig in. Good action and cool looking too.

Doc Watson was 88 a few days ago and, if ever there was a National Treasure (US), he must be it. I've been playing "Deep River Blues" for years - just thought it would be fun to celebrate Doc's birthday by doing a few off-the-cuff improvisations around the tune and chords. www.mjra.net

Let it rain, let it pour, Let it rain a whole lot more, 'Cause I got them deep river blues. Let the rain drive right on, Let the waves sweep along, 'Cause I got them deep river blues. My old gal's a good old pal, And she looks like a water fowl, When I get them deep river blues. Ain't no one to cry for me, And the fish all go out on a spree When I get them deep river blues. Give me back my old boat, I'm gonna sail if she'll float, 'Cause I got them deep river blues, I'm goin' back to Muscle Shoals, Times are better there I'm told, Cause I got them deep river blues. Let it rain, let it pour, Let it rain a whole lot more, 'Cause I got them deep river blues, Let the rain drive right on, Let the waves sweep along, 'Cause I got them deep river blues. If my boat sinks with me. I'll go down, don't you see, 'Cause I got them deep river blues, Now I'm gonna say goodbye, And if I sink, just let me die, 'Cause I got them deep river blues. Let it rain, let it pour, Let it rain a whole lot more, 'Cause I got them deep river blues, Let the rain drive right on, Let the waves sweep along, 'Cause I got them deep river blues

This is the tune Deep River Blues on my Gretsch Nashville Classic. It has a different sound and feel, then on the acoustic, but I think it makes for a fun variation. This is a hybrid version of Deep River Blues using some licks for Doc Watson's version, Pat Kirtley's version, and Jorma K.'s "Big River Blues". The guitar is a 2006 Gretsch Nashvile Classic (now called a Chet Atkins' Country Gentleman 1959) 6122-1959 through a Fender Blues Jr. amp.

The boys of Bristol based band 'Appalachia' have a lot of fun playing this song. I think it was written by the Delmore Brothers but 'Doc Watson' does the definitive version which inspired us to learn it.
