While I'm editing my latest video (looks like it's going to be 5 parts) I thought I'd do this quick one featuring an essay from one of my heroes, American lawyer and civil rights activist Clarence Seward Darrow. Perhaps best known for his role as the Defence Lawyer in the Scopes Monkey Trial, he struck a mighty blow against Christian Fundamentalism when he locked horns on the witness stand with the bombastic lawyer William Jennings Bryan one blisteringly hot day in Dayton, Tennessee. Darrow knew he couldn't win the case, it was open and shut. His client, a teacher, had taught evolution in school, and that was against the law. Darrow quickly saw the "larger picture" and realized he had to tackle head-on the thinking behind such a law, if he was ever going to have a hope of changing the law. Darrow lost the case, but he won a much bigger battle that day that Bryan took the witness stand. Darrow was also a very outspoken agnostic. This is an essay that he wrote on that subject.

Milwaukee actor David Ferrie portrays Americas most famous lawyer, Clarence Darrow, in Rintels' sterling script based on the book CLARENCE DARROW FOR THE DEFENSE. This novel, by esteemed author Irving Stone, dramatically recounted the life and times of the "legal eagle" who gained notoriety and fame through a series of inflammatory trials such as the Scopes' "Monkey Trial" in which Darwinism and arguments of evolution threatened to rock America. Darrow also served as defense counsel for the infamous Leopold and Loeb murder trial, which incited Chicagoans to cry for the death penalty for the two young men accused of brutally murdering a defenseless young boy. Mr. Ferrie is certainly no stranger to Milwaukee audiences and is an old friend to the unique challenges of playing a large role. Paul Darrow (Avon) and Gareth Thomas (Blake) discuss doing stunts in Blakes 7, including the effect that real dynamite has on one's running speed. The interview is audio only, with the relevant scenes from "Pressure Point" (Series 2) and "Warlord" (Series 4). The interview with Darrow and Thomas took place in the mid 1990s, and was part of Sheelagh Wells' "Together Again" series of interviews which reunited various B7 cast members and were available on audio cassette. Sheelagh Wells was one of the authors of "Blakes 7: The Inside Story" (she can be heard laughing during the interview), and also worked on the program as a make-up artist.
