The comet and the coronal mass ejection

On October 1, 2011, a comet screamed into the Sun and presumably disintegrated. A few minutes later, the Sun erupted in a big blast of magnetic energy called a Coronal Mass Ejection. Are the two related? I show three satellite views of the comet and CME from three different angles, and describe the events. My conclusion: it's almost certainly coincidence. NASA SDO - Summer Solstice Coronal Mass Ejection

On June 21 the Sun produced a C7 class flare. The Coronal Mass Ejection was aimed at Earth and is traveling at approx. 650 km/h towards Earth. Not to fear! Earth's magnetic field will "welcoming" the arriving CME around June 24 and the blow should not cause any major issues. The forecast predicts a G1-class (which is a Kp 5) geomagnetic storm. We should be seeing some auroras. G1 class is considered a minor storm, having only a weak impact on power systems, minor impact on satellite operations. Some of the migratory animals are affected at this level and can trigger aurorae in high latitudes. Credit: NASA SDO

NASA SDO - Large Flare and Coronal Mass Ejection (CME)

The Sun unleashed a large X class (strongest category) flare late on Sept. 7 and into early Sept. 8, 2011. The images were taken in extreme ultraviolet (UV) light from SDO. The video clip presents the flash of the flare and a mass of ejecta that rose above the Sun, some of which fell back to the surface. However, other instruments from SOHO and STEREO showed a large mass of particles rushing out into space. Flares emit a great deal of radiation, but this is not captured in this wavelength of light. The brightness of this flare caused very bright saturation and 'blooming' above and below the flare region on the CCD detector and caused extended diffraction patterns to spread out. X-Ray Flare, Coronal Mass Ejection, Proton Storm - M2.5 Magnitude - June 7 2011

Linked video: www.youtube.com Watch this amazing explosion on the Sun. From sunspot complex 1226-1227 comes an X-ray Flare peaking at a magnitude of M2.5 at 0640 UTC on 7 June, 2011. This X-ray flare hurled a massive coronal mass ejection (CME) toward the Earth. This not-squarely Earth-directed CME is moving at 1400 km/s according to NASA models. The CME did not deliver even a noticeable glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field late June 8th or June 9th. What can be seen clearly in this movie is one of the most spectacular prominence eruptions ever observed. In fact, one could call it a "prominence explosion". The prominence material expanded to a volume some 75 times as big across as the earth! This X-ray flare also triggered an S1-level solar radiation storm, causing a long-lasting polar cap absorption (PCA) event. A polar cap absorption (PCA) event affects the propagation of a shortwave radio signal as it makes its way over the polar regions. In short, radio communications on lower shortwave radio frequencies become more difficult, as those radio signals are absorbed by the ionosphere (in the D-region) over the polar regions. What does this mean in real-world communications? Trans-polar airline pilots may find it more difficult to communicate with regional air traffic control, shortwave radio listeners who want to hear a broadcast from a country by receiving a transmission from a country by way of a transmission beamed over the pole (like, from Europe into the USA via ...

INCOMING CORONAL MASS EJECTION: Arrival ( June 17th at 10:50 UT plus minus 7 hours).

CORONAL MASS EJECTION: On June 14th around 0810 UT, a magnetic filament near the sun's eastern limb became unstable and erupted. The resulting blast hurled a bright and massive CME into space: The expanding cloud was observed by 3 spacecraft: STEREO-A, STEREO-B and SOHO. Researchers at the Goddard Space Flight Center's Space Weather Lab assembled data from the fleet to create a 3-dimensional model of the expanding cloud: movie. According to their analysis, the cloud blew away from the sun at a speed of 830 km/s and it could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on June 17th at 10:50 UT (plus minus 7 hours). The impact is not expected to provoke strong geomagnetic storming. Nevertheless, high-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras when the CME arrives.

My 'Sun' had a Coronal Mass Ejection at Sunset! March23, 2011

I caught it on tape ... I kept thinking I saw sparks in the air,,,,like lightning bugs or something,,,,,but then I caught more than a spark and I KNEW then. This air IS electrified! Ther is WAAAY too much energy in the air. However, that description can only make sense to you if you have experienced it..... Every day I watch the webcams somewhere around the world . There are some very strange 'suns' appearing in the skies all around the globe.... I think that most of the weird ones are plasma. - homemade plasma not the real naturally occuring plasma....Plasma is very responsive to and easily manipulated by electrical and/or electromagnetic energy. But,.plasma must have a container to hold a defined shape, otherwise it is more gaseous or liquid-like and cannot hold itself together. Electricity and electromagnetic waves can be used to form a coontainer for certain plasmas.Consequently, though, when these waves fluctuate, the invisible container and therefore the shape of the visible plasma also fluctuates. Hence you can sometimes see it 'morphing' or 'melting'. Perhaps, this could be a possible explanation for the phenomena of what some call 'fake' or hologram planes or see as planes that seem to morph into orbs, change shape or lose pieces in midair. It could also be related to 'cloaking' and disappearing phenomena that is sometimes assoiated with these 'fake plane' chemtrail sprayers..... Beware of the gray cloud stuff. It seems to have creepy crawler monsters in it. It ...

NASA STEREO Tracks Solar Storms - First Time

Plasma from solar flares or coronal mass ejections travel along solar wind to ultimately produce aurora's in Earth's polar regions, and affect satellites and power grids and other man-made electronics. Related video: www.youtube.com For many years, the idea that coronal mass ejections (CME) launched from the Sun and could strike the Earth was inferred from an indirect chain of evidence collected from multiple satellites. Now the Heliospheric Imagers aboard the STEREO-A spacecraft has managed to view a CME propagate from the surface of the Sun to the Earth. This visualization shows the position of the STEREO spacecraft during the event, as well as the positions of the inner solar system planets, Venus and Mercury. A faint cone illustrates the field-of-view (FOV) of the HI-2 imager on STEREO-A. The position of the front of the CME is computed from STEREO data. NASA's STEREO spacecraft and new data processing techniques have succeeded in tracking space weather events from their origin in the Sun's ultra-hot corona to impact with the Earth 96 million miles away, resolving a 40-year mystery about the structure of the structures that cause space weather: how the structures that impact the Earth relate to the corresponding structures in the solar corona. Despite many instruments that monitor the Sun and a fleet of near-earth probes, the connection between near-Earth disturbances and their counterparts on the Sun has been obscure, because CMEs and the solar wind evolve and change ...

New Spectacular Solar Flare and Coronal Mass Ejection

The Sun unleashed an M-2 (medium-sized) solar flare with a spectacular coronal mass ejection (CME) on June 7. The large cloud of particles mushroomed up and fell back down looking as if it covered an area of almost half the solar surface. SDO observed the flare's peak at 1:41 AM ET. SDO recorded these images in extreme ultraviolet light and they show a very large explosion of cool gas. It is somewhat unique because at many places in the eruption there seems to be even cooler material -- at temperatures less than 80000K. When viewed in SOHO's coronagraphs, the event shows bright plasma and high-energy particles roaring from the Sun. This Earth-directed CME is moving at 1400 km/s according to NASA models. Due to its angle, however, effects on Earth should be fairly small. Nevertheless, it may generate space weather effects here on Earth in a few days. Credit: NASA/SDO

A dark filament of magnetism moving halfway around the Sun

MERCURY-DIRECTED CME: A significant coronal mass ejection (CME) blasted away from the sun's eastern hemisphere on Nov. 12th. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab say the cloud will hit Mercury on Nov. 13th at 1800 UT (+/- 7 hr) followed by Venus about one day later. The innermost planets are about to experience space weather REMARKABLE SOLAR ACTIVITY: There haven't been any strong solar flares in days. Nevertheless, some impressive activity is underway on the sun. For one thing, an enormous wall of plasma is towering over the sun's southeastern horizon. Stephen Ramsden of Atlanta, Georgia, took this picture on Nov. 11th: "Solar forums all over the world are buzzing with Sun-stronomers proclaiming this to be the biggest prominence that many of them had ever witnessed," he says. Remarkably, though, this is not the biggest thing. A dark filament of magnetism is snaking more than halfway around the entire sun: SDO image. From end to end, it stretches more than a million km or about three times the distance between Earth and the Moon. If the filament becomes unstable, as solar filaments are prone to do, it could collapse and hit the stellar surface below, triggering a Hyder flare. No one can say if the eruption of such a sprawling structure would be Earth directed. SPACE WEATHER spaceweather.com

NASA SDO - Coronal Mass Ejection: Up-close and Personal (Part 1)

A coronal mass ejection (CME) blasted out from an active region that was just coming around the Sun's edge (May 9-10, 2011). Even in the close-up video of the CME observed by SDO in extreme ultraviolet light, the blast is not so apparent: it looks more like a flower opening its petals. However, the arcade of coiling magnetic field lines seen in profile are busily reconnecting after the blast (called post-flare loops) and put on a splendid show. The growing, expanding loop arcade with time is an illusion. This perceived expansion results from the magnetic reconnection process proceeding upward into the corona, forming new closed hot loops at successively higher levels in the 171 Angstrom channel. The lower loops, which get heated first, cool out of the 171 Angstrom channel sooner than the higher loops. These two effects produce an apparent rising loop system. That video clip shows about 20 hours of activity. Watch Part 2 (NASA/ESA SOHO LASCO's view point) here: www.youtube.com Credit: NASA SDO
