SOHO (NASA-ESA Solar & Heliospheric Observatory) watched as a fairly bright comet dove towards the Sun in a white streak and was not seen again after its close encounter (May 10-11, 2011). The comet, probably part of the Kreutz family of comets, was discovered by amateur astronomer Sergey Shurpakov. In this coronagraph the Sun (represented by a white circle) is blocked by the red occulting disk so that the faint structures in the Sun's corona can be discerned. Interestingly, a coronal mass ejection blasted out to the right just as the comet is approaching the Sun. Scientists, however, have yet to find a convincing physical connection between sun-grazing comets and coronal mass ejections. In fact, analysis of this CME using images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory shows that the CME erupted before the comet came close enough to the solar surface to interact with strong magnetic fields.

Comets are important because they represent the leftover bits and pieces from the outer solar system formation process, which took place four and a half billion years ago. As the planets formed, the first thing you got was tiny clumps of dust in the inner solar system, and in the outer system, dust and ice. The comets are what made the cores of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. But the planets are so hot that the chemistry changes completely, whereas the comets have remained frozen the entire time so that the chemistry is preserved. Comets are basically made up of a number of different regions; a dirty ice ball, relatively small and black. When it gets near the sun these ices start vaporizing, which forms a atmosphere. And then, when some of these dust particles are blown back away from the sun because of the pressure of sunlight, you form a dust tail and often a gas or ion tail. Comets and asteroids have always gotten bad press. The dinosaurs checked out 65 million years ago because of an asteroid impact. But what we don't hear about, is how important these objects are in terms of bringing the building blocks of life to the early planet. Comets almost certainly brought most of the organic material and much of the water to Earth. In a sense, we wouldn't even be here without comets and asteroids. The NASA spacecraft 'Stardust' has started beaming back the first pictures of a comet that swept past it. The encounter will give scientists unique information on how these great balls of ice and dust change over time. The craft, hoped the more than 70 high-resolution images, would reveal the extent of the impact crater and surroundings. It's the first time a comet has been viewed by two different spacecraft.

Halley's Comet or Comet Halley (officially designated 1P/Halley) is the most famous of the periodic comets, and is visible from Earth every 75 to 76 years. Many comets with long orbital periods may appear brighter and more spectacular, but Halley is the only short-period comet that is clearly visible to the naked eye, and thus, the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human lifetime. Hersheypark - Front left seat ride on The Comet, Hersheypark's classic wooden rollercoaster, filmed June 8, 2009 using Flip Video. Built in 1946 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the coaster features an out and back track layout. When built it was jointly owned by Hershey Park and PTC. The Comet goes up an 84 foot lift, and then drops 96 feet at 52°, according to Hersheypark. Though Hersheypark claims this to be the correct number, other people dispute this measurement and say that the drop is the same as the lift, at 84 feet. After the first drop, also called the "Chocolate Drop," the train goes up a hill and then makes a 180 degree turn, drops back down another hill, goes up a small hill, and then up a larger hill, making another 180 degree turn. After the turn, there is another drop, and after a bunny hill, the track makes a right turn ("dog leg"), going through several bunny hills before another 180 degree turn. Following the second set of bunny hills is a left turn, two bunny hills and the then the train slows into the station. As is typical, the train usually sits for a few moments before coming around into the station because of an extra "brakage" that served as an unloading point until the Comet was renovated in the mid 1990s. By having a "load" and "unload" point, the ride could handle three trains, as it did when it was built.

A comet discovered on Friday September 30, 2011 by an amateur astronomer disintegrated on Saturday October 1, 2011 when it plunged into the Sun. The Corongraph of NASA/ESA's SOHO captured the last few hours of the comet. Very shortly after the comet dove into the Sun a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) exploded. As of current solar scientists do not believe that a comet can trigger a Coronal Mass Ejection - however, the question of if a comet could cause a magnetic instability on the Sun remains and is being studied. On July 6, 2011 the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) observed a sungrazing comet and it appeared to interact with the plasma and magnetic field as it fell apart. The first two segments in this video are from October 1, 2011 and were observed by NASA/ESA's SOHO spacecraft. The last two segments were captured by NASA's SDO on July 5, 2011. An incredible video of a sungrazer "Kreutz" comet hitting the Sun, and soon afterwards a huge Coronal Mass Ejection spews from the Sun. Did the comet cause the explosion? There is no known mechanism for the two events being related, and the source region of the CME did not correlate with the comet hit location near the solar disk.
